Champions League Matchday 1 wrap-up: Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG and Bayern all win big

Matchday 1 of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase wrapped up this week, and the usual heavyweights made their intentions clear early. Bayern Munich set the tone with a 5-0 demolition of Bodø/Glimt, while Paris Saint-Germain were nearly as ruthless, putting six past Slovan Bratislava in a 6-1 win. Barcelona also hit five, beating Feyenoord 5-1, and Manchester United cruised past Sabah 4-0. The results were tighter elsewhere among the traditional contenders. Real Madrid edged Inter 2-1, Manchester City won 2-0 away at Porto, and Liverpool beat Atletico Madrid 2-1. Arsenal’s trip to Napoli produced the tightest scoreline of the lot, with a single goal enough to see the Gunners home 1-0. Elsewhere, there were away wins for Aston Villa at Club Brugge (3-2) and Real Betis at Lille (3-2), a routine 3-1 win for Sporting CP over Galatasaray, and a narrow 1-0 win for AEK Athens against LASK. Como’s 4-1 win over RB Leipzig was arguably the biggest shock of the round, while Fenerbahce and Roma, along with PSV Eindhoven and Shakhtar Donetsk, could only manage 1-1 draws. Manchester United’s 4-0 win over Sabah and Slavia Praha’s 3-2 defeat of Lens rounded out an entertaining opening set of fixtures. Matchday 2 of the league phase is scheduled for 13-14 October, giving every side a month to build on their opening results.
