China Open; Angelique Kerber suffered a shocking defeat from Zhang Shuai

Angelique Kerber; Wimbledon Champion,  suffered a shocking exit from the hand of the world no. 45 Zhang Shuai at the China Open match held on Thursday.

China’s Zhang, managed to gain a win over Kerber, the German No. 3 by 6-1, 2-6 and 6-0 much to the delight of her home crowd. The end of these three thrilling sets has now allowed Zhang to face off against the US Open Champion Naomi Osaka in the quarter-final of the China Open.

Three times Grand Slam winner; Kerber said to media that she had been facing difficulty during the see-saw battle due to her knee injury. However, she refuses to blame this problem for her defeat to the unseeded player Zhang.

30 years old Kerber said to media that, “I was not feeling great at the stat of the match but then is started playing better and better. As for Zhang, she played a good third set in the end. She took her chances and played a very solid match”.

After Simona Halep retiring from the tournament due to her injury, second seed Caroline Wozniacki is the current highest ranking player in the tournament. She also secured her quarter-final spot after defeating Anett Kontaveit by 7-5 and 6-4.

On the other hand, Naomi Osaka after her first Grand Slam title still maintains her top performance as she utterly crushed Julia Goerges by 6-1 and 6-2.

20 years old Belarusian player Aryna Sabalenka shocked the crowd by defeating the former China Open champion and fourth seed player Caroline Garcia by 5-7, 7-6 and 6-0. Home crowd’s favorite and unseeded player Wang Qiang also maintained her winning position by defeating world no. 7 Karolina Pliskova by 6-4 and 6-4.

Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova won against 26 years old Kiki Bertens by 6-4 and 6-043 to secure her position in the last eight and is up against Wozniacki next.
