Cobolli through to final as Arnaldi withdraws with virus
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Italian tennis player Matteo Arnaldi described his heartbreaking withdrawal from his first-ever Grand Slam semi-final at the French Open as an experience he would not wish upon anyone. The 25-year-old was scheduled to face his close friend and compatriot Flavio Cobolli in the last four at Roland Garros, but illness forced him to pull out just minutes before the match was due to begin.

Arnaldi’s withdrawal was officially announced at approximately 17:35 BST, only 25 minutes before the players were set to walk onto Court Philippe Chatrier. The late nature of the decision added to the shock and disappointment surrounding the situation, both for fans and those involved in the tournament.

Ranked 104th in the world, Arnaldi had been enjoying a breakthrough run in Paris. Prior to this tournament, he had never advanced beyond the fourth round of a Grand Slam event. His journey to the semi-finals was a remarkable achievement, highlighting both his determination and his growing potential on the professional circuit.

However, his dream run came to an abrupt halt due to a viral illness that left him physically unable to compete. Arnaldi explained that he attempted to assess whether he could still take to the court, but quickly realized it was not possible.

He revealed that every time he tried to stand up, he felt dizzy and unsteady. In addition to this, he was unable to eat or drink, leaving him severely weakened. Under such conditions, competing at the highest level was simply out of the question. Ultimately, he made the difficult but necessary decision to withdraw from the match.

Arnaldi shared that his symptoms began the night before the semi-final. He woke up at around 1am with severe stomach pain, which was soon followed by repeated bouts of vomiting. The illness prevented him from getting any meaningful rest, and his condition worsened as the day progressed.

By the morning, it was clear that his situation was serious. He called for medical assistance, and a doctor visited him in his hotel room. Despite hopes that the issue might have been something minor, such as food-related discomfort, his symptoms persisted throughout the day. He remained unable to keep food or liquids down and continued to feel extremely unwell.

The emotional toll of the situation was evident. Arnaldi admitted that being forced to withdraw from such a significant match was incredibly difficult to accept. Reaching a Grand Slam semi-final is a milestone that many players strive for throughout their careers, and having to give it up due to illness made the experience even more painful.

As a result of Arnaldi’s withdrawal, Flavio Cobolli advanced directly to the final. The 24-year-old will now face Germany’s second seed and tournament favorite, Alexander Zverev, who secured his place in the final by defeating Jakub Mensik.

Cobolli expressed his sympathy for his friend, describing the situation as extremely tough. When Arnaldi came to inform him of the decision, Cobolli admitted that he was deeply emotional and close to tears. The two players share a long-standing friendship, having known each other since childhood, which made the circumstances even more poignant.

Shortly after the announcement, both players appeared together at a press conference. In an effort to prevent any risk of infection, they sat at opposite ends of the table, maintaining a cautious distance. Arnaldi appeared visibly unwell, with a pale complexion and signs of fatigue, while Cobolli looked subdued and empathetic toward his friend’s situation.

Arnaldi also took the time to apologize to the fans who had come to watch the highly anticipated semi-final. Approximately 15,000 spectators had already arrived at Roland Garros in anticipation of the match. Tournament organizers later confirmed that ticket holders would receive full refunds due to the cancellation.

To provide some form of entertainment for the crowd, Cobolli held a practice session on the main court. Thousands of fans remained in the stands to watch, showing their support despite the unexpected change in schedule.

From a historical perspective, Arnaldi’s withdrawal is a rare occurrence. It is only the third time in the Open era, which began in 1968, that a men’s singles semi-final at a Grand Slam has been decided by a walkover. Such incidents are extremely uncommon, particularly so close to the scheduled start time of the match.

The most recent similar situation occurred at Wimbledon four years ago, when Rafael Nadal withdrew from his semi-final against Nick Kyrgios due to an abdominal injury. Nadal had pushed through significant pain to win his quarter-final match, but ultimately decided he could not continue.

Another instance dates back to the 1992 Australian Open, when Richard Krajicek was unable to compete in his semi-final against Jim Courier due to fitness issues. Courier later recalled being informed of the withdrawal approximately an hour before the match, a scenario similar to Arnaldi’s situation.

The announcement of Arnaldi’s withdrawal created a dramatic moment at Roland Garros. When the public address system in the media center came to life, a sense of anticipation and concern quickly spread among the journalists present. As the news was delivered in both French and English, it became clear that a major development had occurred.

Within minutes, Arnaldi and Cobolli appeared before the media, providing insight into the situation. The scene was a somber one, reflecting the disappointment felt by both players. This was not how either had envisioned their semi-final day unfolding.

For Arnaldi, the experience will undoubtedly be a difficult memory, but it also highlights the unpredictable nature of professional sport. Despite the unfortunate ending, his performance throughout the tournament has marked a significant step forward in his career.

As for Cobolli, he now has the opportunity to compete in his first Grand Slam final. While his path to the final was not the way he would have chosen, he will be focused on making the most of the opportunity.

In the end, the situation serves as a reminder of both the physical demands of elite tennis and the emotional resilience required to navigate its challenges. For more sports news and updates, visit https://netsports247.com/
