It is now official that Madrid is going to host first two installments of the revamped Davis Cup finals.
The news announced on Thursday stated that, the Capital of Spain; Madrid is going to host 2019 and 2020 tournaments.
Davis Cup has been revamped and consists of a week long tournament with 18 tams participating. The venue for the tournament is set to be La Caja Magica which sit he current venue of the Madrid Open. The tournament is going to take place on November 19th, 2019.
The 2020’s tournament is also going to be either played at the same venue or at the WiZink Centre.
T revised format of Davis Cup will see a group stage tournament within the first four days. During this participating countries will be split into six groups of three.
David Haggerty, President of the International Tennis Federation told media, “We are delighted to bring the 2019’s Davis Cup Finals to Madrid. Madrid is the fittest location to stage high quality tennis. We are looking forward to work with the City of Madrid to realize our goal of elevating Davis Cup to a new better level”.
Each tie of the tournament will be consistent of two singles and a doubles match for the best of three set format. Out of the participating countries only six group winners and two best second place teams will qualify for the quarter finals.
Teams finishing fifth to 11th in the group stages will be taking part in qualifiers for the next year. Whereas for teams finishing 17th and 9th, thy will be relegated to their respective zones.
This announcement was made after the day when Argentina and Great Britain were handed down the Wild Cards for competing in the 2019’s Davis Cup finals.
