Do Villa have the legs to end their 30-year trophy drought?

Aston Villa’s 2026 campaign has been a rollercoaster, marked by both challenges and moments of optimism. The club’s fortunes have swung sharply due to injuries, player comebacks, and the pressures of competing on multiple fronts. Fans and analysts are watching closely to see if manager Unai Emery can navigate these obstacles and guide Villa to a historic season.

The most immediate concern for Villa has been their mounting injury list. Midfielder Boubacar Kamara has been ruled out for the season, leaving a significant gap in the squad’s defensive and transitional play. Kamara’s absence is particularly concerning because of his ability to provide both defensive stability and forward support in Emery’s tactical setup. His versatility allowed Villa to rotate between a more solid defensive line and an attacking midfield presence. Losing him at a crucial point in the season puts additional pressure on Emery to adjust his system and deploy alternatives effectively.

Adding to the injury woes, key midfielders John McGinn and Youri Tielemans have also been sidelined. McGinn, the energetic and tenacious Scot, is known for his tireless running, defensive work, and ability to link play between defense and attack. His presence often allows Villa to maintain a high tempo and press opponents effectively. Tielemans, meanwhile, brings composure, passing accuracy, and creative vision. Together, the absence of these three central midfielders would challenge even the deepest squads, highlighting the importance of squad depth as Villa push through a congested fixture list.

Fortunately for Aston Villa, the club has managed to find solutions to mitigate these absences. The return of Douglas Luiz from Juventus provides a much-needed boost in the midfield. Luiz, a Brazilian international renowned for his defensive work, ball-winning ability, and knack for controlling the tempo, offers Emery a reliable option to stabilize the team. His arrival is a timely reinforcement that could ease the pressure on Villa’s squad as they navigate key fixtures across domestic and European competitions.

Villa currently find themselves in a promising position across several competitions, which heightens both excitement and risk. In the Premier League, they are sitting in third place, competing for one of the coveted top-four positions that would guarantee Champions League football next season. This standing represents a significant achievement, as the English top flight is exceptionally competitive, with heavyweights like Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool vying for the same spots. Villa’s ability to maintain consistency, especially in the face of injuries, will be critical to holding onto this position.

In the FA Cup, Villa has progressed into the fourth round, keeping alive the prospect of silverware in England’s oldest football competition. A deep run in the FA Cup not only provides fans with the excitement of knockout football but also offers the club a historic chance at a major trophy. The last time Aston Villa won a significant domestic trophy was in 1996, meaning that for nearly three decades, the club has sought a return to major honors. This context adds pressure and expectation for Emery and his squad as they attempt to deliver on multiple fronts.

In Europe, Villa’s ambitions continue as they aim to finish atop their Europa League group, with a crucial fixture against Red Bull Salzburg on Thursday night. Success in Europe would not only provide a morale boost but also enhance the club’s profile internationally. Competing in the knockout stages of the Europa League demands careful squad management, particularly as the number of fixtures increases and the risk of injuries grows. Villa’s performance against Salzburg will be a telling indicator of whether Emery can sustain competitive form across different competitions.

If Villa progress to the finals of both the Europa League and FA Cup while maintaining a strong league position, the team could end the season having played 61 matches. Such a demanding schedule will test the limits of squad rotation, tactical flexibility, and physical conditioning. Emery’s ability to rotate his squad while maintaining high performance levels will be crucial. With injuries to key players like Kamara, McGinn, and Tielemans, the onus falls on fringe players and returning stars like Douglas Luiz to step up and deliver in high-pressure scenarios.

The question now facing Aston Villa is whether the current squad possesses the depth and resilience required to achieve historic success. Emery, a manager with extensive experience in European football, has a reputation for tactical acumen and adaptability. However, even the most accomplished managers face challenges when injuries strike and fixtures pile up. Villa’s ability to cope with the intensity of the season will rely on both strategic rotations and the emergence of players ready to seize opportunities when called upon.

One of the key strengths of Emery’s Villa side has been their balance of youth and experience. Players like Ollie Watkins, Leon Bailey, and Emiliano Buendía provide attacking creativity and flair, while seasoned campaigners such as Emiliano Martínez in goal bring composure and leadership. The integration of Douglas Luiz strengthens the spine of the team and helps bridge the gap left by injured midfielders, potentially allowing Emery to maintain stability in the middle of the park. This balance will be crucial as the season progresses, particularly during periods of fixture congestion.

Villa’s fixture list presents a formidable challenge, especially with league matches interspersed with domestic cup and European commitments. Each competition requires a tailored approach: the Premier League demands consistency and results against varied opposition; the FA Cup emphasizes knockout mentality and resilience; and the Europa League requires tactical adaptability to succeed against diverse continental styles. Managing these different demands simultaneously will be a defining test of Emery’s managerial skills and Villa’s squad depth.

Fan expectations are high, given the club’s current league position and the historical context of potential trophies. Aston Villa supporters, who have waited decades for major silverware, are likely to scrutinize each match and player performance. Success in the Premier League, FA Cup, or Europa League would not only reward the squad but also cement Emery’s reputation and reinforce the club’s ambition to compete at the highest level domestically and in Europe.

In conclusion, Aston Villa’s 2026 season is unfolding as a test of resilience, tactical intelligence, and squad depth. The combination of injuries to key midfielders and the timely return of Douglas Luiz creates a narrative of challenge and opportunity. With a strong league position, a continued FA Cup run, and the chance to top their Europa League group, Villa is navigating a complex web of fixtures and expectations. Whether Emery’s squad can withstand the rigors of a 61-match season and secure the club’s first major trophy since 1996 will depend on careful rotation, player adaptability, and moments of individual brilliance. The coming weeks will be decisive in determining if Aston Villa can turn promise into historic achievement.
