Duckett withdraws from IPL to focus on England

Ben Duckett Withdraws from IPL to Focus on England and County Cricket

Ben Duckett has made the significant decision to withdraw from the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL), prioritizing his international career with England over the lucrative franchise tournament. Duckett, who was set to make his IPL debut with the Delhi Capitals after being purchased for £159,000 during the December auction, will instead focus on playing domestic cricket with Nottinghamshire, aiming to regain form and consistency ahead of the English summer.

The 31-year-old opening batter has endured a challenging winter with the bat, managing only one half-century across 16 innings in all formats. His struggles were particularly evident during England’s recent Ashes tour of Australia, where he scored 202 runs in 10 Test innings at an average of 20.20, with a top score of 42. This period of poor form has prompted Duckett to take a step back from the high-pressure environment of the IPL in order to focus on revitalizing his game.

In a statement, Duckett explained that his decision had been carefully considered and was not taken lightly. “I have given this a lot of thought, and it has not been an easy choice,” he said. “It felt like the best thing for me to do to be ready to play for England is to be here right now, at home, refreshing my mind and body. I want to play some four-day cricket for Notts and try to find that form I had early last summer.”

Duckett’s withdrawal from the IPL is a testament to his commitment to prolonging his career at the international level. In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, he emphasized his desire to compete in all three formats for England for as long as possible and outlined his plan to do everything necessary to prepare for the upcoming international summer. “This is a decision I hope I will look back on in 10 years and see as a pivotal moment in my career, and the right decision,” Duckett said.

His move comes in the wake of a difficult Ashes series for England, which included off-field controversies. During a break between Tests in the Australian beach town of Noosa, a video circulated on social media—though unverified by the BBC—showing Duckett allegedly inebriated. Duckett publicly expressed regret over the incident, acknowledging that it was unprofessional and should not have occurred. “I am sorry for that incident. It was not professional and shouldn’t have happened. There is no hiding away from it,” he said.

Despite the controversy, Duckett was named in England’s squad for the T20 World Cup that followed the Ashes, although he did not make an appearance. He admitted that being sidelined for the World Cup and missing the opportunity to play in the IPL had been difficult but noted that the challenges had motivated him to work harder. “Not playing in the World Cup and being on the sidelines in India after such a tough Ashes series was a struggle for me. But it’s lit a massive fire in my belly moving forward,” Duckett explained.

His decision to withdraw from the IPL does not come without consequences. The tournament has strict rules regarding players pulling out at short notice. According to the regulations introduced last season, any player who withdraws can face a ban from participating in the next two IPL seasons. This means Duckett is likely to miss the tournament until after 2029, resulting in not only a significant loss of earnings but also a missed opportunity to compete at one of the highest levels of T20 cricket globally.

For Delhi Capitals, losing Duckett is a blow, as the team had anticipated his contribution in the opening stages of the IPL. However, Nottinghamshire has benefited greatly from the decision, gaining access to one of England’s most experienced and talented batters for the early rounds of the County Championship. Director of cricket Mick Newell expressed his support and understanding of Duckett’s choice, noting the positive impact it will have on the county team.

“We are supportive and fully understanding of Ben’s decision, which we know he did not make lightly,” Newell said. “We are obviously very pleased to see him become unexpectedly available for us in the early part of the 2026 season, and we will continue to give him our full support in his career. I’m sure I’m not alone in saying I look forward to seeing him in Nottinghamshire whites again very soon.”

Duckett’s return to domestic cricket provides him with a controlled environment to rebuild confidence and work on his technique. Playing in the County Championship offers him the opportunity to face quality opposition in longer formats, allowing him to focus on consistency, timing, and mental resilience without the immense pressure of the IPL. This move reflects a growing trend among international cricketers who occasionally step back from high-profile tournaments to prioritize national duty and career longevity.

While financial considerations are often a significant factor for players participating in franchise leagues like the IPL, Duckett’s choice highlights the balancing act many international cricketers face. By prioritizing England and Nottinghamshire over immediate monetary gain, Duckett is signaling his commitment to sustained performance and long-term international aspirations.

The upcoming English season will test Duckett’s readiness, as he seeks to prove that he can rediscover the form that made him a key figure in England’s batting lineup. Coaches and selectors will be watching closely, and strong performances in county cricket could cement his place across all three formats of the game. For fans, it represents a chance to see a revitalized Duckett who has reflected on past challenges and is determined to make a lasting impact on the international stage.

Ultimately, Duckett’s decision is about more than just cricket. It underscores the importance of mental and physical preparation, professional responsibility, and the long-term vision that top athletes must maintain. By choosing to step away from a high-profile opportunity to focus on rebuilding his form and readiness for England duty, Duckett demonstrates a maturity and focus that could define the next phase of his career.

As the English domestic season approaches, all eyes will be on Nottinghamshire’s opening fixtures to see how Duckett adapts and thrives after taking this difficult but strategically important step. His performance will not only influence his personal career trajectory but also serve as an example of prioritizing long-term objectives over short-term rewards in professional sports.
