‘Four days of hell in hospital’ – Kearns on miscarriage
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

England international and Aston Villa midfielder Missy Bo Kearns has shared a deeply emotional and personal account of one of the most difficult periods of her life, revealing how she endured a miscarriage and a life-threatening case of sepsis within the same week. Describing the experience as “four days of hell in hospital,” Kearns opened up about the physical and emotional toll the ordeal has taken on her and her partner, footballer Liam Walsh.

The couple had publicly announced their pregnancy at the beginning of March, marking what was meant to be a joyful new chapter in their lives. However, their happiness was tragically short-lived, as Kearns lost the baby later that same month in circumstances that unfolded rapidly and unexpectedly.

Kearns recalled how the situation escalated on 18 March while she was at Aston Villa’s Bodymoor Heath training facility. At first, she believed she was experiencing normal pregnancy-related symptoms. Feeling unwell but not overly concerned, she sought advice from the club’s sports doctor, Jodie Blackadder-Weinstein. What initially seemed like something minor quickly turned into a serious medical emergency.

When her temperature was checked, it was alarmingly high, reaching 42 degrees. Despite the severity of her condition, Kearns described how she was still shaking and struggling to fully grasp what was happening. The doctor immediately recognized the seriousness of the situation and urged her to go to the hospital without delay.

Once at the hospital, Kearns received devastating news. Not only had she lost her baby, but she had also developed sepsis—a potentially fatal condition caused by the body’s extreme response to infection. The rapid turn of events left her in shock, especially considering she had been physically active just an hour earlier, participating in Pilates and gym training.

Sepsis is a critical medical condition that can escalate quickly if not treated promptly. It occurs when the immune system overreacts to an infection, leading to inflammation that can damage tissues and organs. Kearns’ case highlights how difficult it can be to identify the condition early, as symptoms can resemble common illnesses like the flu.

Reflecting on the experience, Kearns expressed immense gratitude toward the medical staff at Aston Villa, particularly Dr Blackadder-Weinstein. She believes that the doctor’s insistence on immediate hospital care may have saved her life. Had she been at home, she admitted she might have dismissed her symptoms as something minor and chosen to rest instead of seeking urgent medical attention.

The days that followed in the hospital were incredibly challenging for both Kearns and her partner. She described the experience as emotionally and physically exhausting, emphasizing that the true impact of what they went through only became clear with time. During those difficult days, her focus was largely on the loss of her baby, even as she battled a serious infection that required urgent treatment.

Kearns highlighted how overwhelming the situation was, explaining that her thoughts were consumed by grief, while Walsh shared the same emotional burden. The combination of personal loss and a life-threatening illness created an intense and traumatic experience for both of them.

Since leaving the hospital, Kearns has begun the process of recovery, both physically and mentally. She has returned to Aston Villa’s training ground to spend time with her teammates and gradually rebuild her fitness. While she has been able to resume some light training activities, such as cycling and fitness assessments, she acknowledged that her recovery is far from complete.

Emotionally, Kearns admitted that she is still struggling to cope fully with what has happened. She described her healing process as unpredictable, with some days feeling manageable while others are significantly more difficult. She explained that grief often comes in waves, triggered by reminders and responsibilities related to the loss.

Her honesty sheds light on the ongoing mental health challenges faced by athletes dealing with personal trauma. Despite her strength and determination, Kearns emphasized that she is still processing her emotions and learning how to navigate this new reality.

Kearns also used her platform to encourage others going through similar experiences to seek support and avoid suffering in silence. She stressed that everyone processes grief differently but highlighted the importance of talking openly and accessing available resources. In particular, she mentioned Tommy’s, a UK-based charity dedicated to supporting those affected by pregnancy and baby loss, as a valuable source of help.

Looking ahead, Kearns remains focused on her football career, even as she continues her recovery. Having made her senior England debut earlier in the year, she had initially set her sights on earning a place in the squad for the upcoming World Cup in Brazil. Despite the challenges she has faced, that ambition remains unchanged.

She acknowledged that returning to peak physical condition will take time and does not expect to play again until next season. However, she is committed to rebuilding her strength, both mentally and physically, in preparation for a crucial year ahead.

Kearns described football as her “happy place,” expressing her excitement about being back around her teammates and gradually working toward her goals. The experience has also given her a new perspective on life, helping her realize that there are things beyond football that truly matter.

At the same time, she expressed a renewed appreciation for the sport, stating that she now intends to enjoy every moment on the pitch as if it were her last. This outlook reflects a deeper understanding of how quickly life can change and the importance of valuing every opportunity.

In conclusion, Missy Bo Kearns’ story is one of resilience, courage, and honesty. Her willingness to share such a personal experience not only raises awareness about serious medical conditions like sepsis but also highlights the emotional realities of pregnancy loss. As she continues her recovery, her determination to return stronger—both as a person and as a footballer—remains clear.
