‘I was screaming’ – footballer stabbed seven times recalls mass knife attack

Footballer Jonathan Gjoshe has finally opened up about the terrifying knife attack that nearly cost him his life, sharing details of the traumatic experience for the first time, six months after the incident. The 23-year-old defender, who was playing for Scunthorpe United at the time, described the shocking moment when his journey home turned into a life-threatening ordeal.

The incident occurred on 1 November last year, when Gjoshe was traveling by train from Doncaster to London. It was meant to be a routine trip, a chance to relax after football commitments. However, about an hour into the journey, the situation took a horrifying turn when an attacker armed with a knife began targeting passengers.

Recalling the moment, Gjoshe explained that he was sitting calmly when someone suddenly approached from behind and stabbed him without warning. The unexpected nature of the attack left him momentarily stunned, but instinct quickly took over.

He remembers being stabbed in the shoulder first, triggering immediate pain, but also an adrenaline rush that pushed him to act quickly. In a desperate attempt to escape, he jumped over tables and seats, sprinting through the carriage while shouting warnings to other passengers. He urged them to run, repeatedly shouting that there was a man with a knife.

Despite his warnings, not everyone reacted immediately. Some passengers initially believed it was a prank, possibly influenced by the fact that the attack occurred just a day after Halloween. However, as the situation became clearer, panic spread, and people began to flee.

Gjoshe believes that his quick reaction saved his life. In those critical seconds, his only thought was survival. He ran through the train, trying to put as much distance as possible between himself and the attacker. Eventually, he managed to reach another carriage, where he pulled the emergency alarm to alert authorities.

By that point, he was severely injured and covered in blood. The gravity of the situation began to sink in, and fear overwhelmed him. He recalls thinking about his family and the possibility that he might never see them again. The randomness of the incident also struck him deeply, as he noted that he rarely traveled by train and had chosen that mode of transport on that particular day by chance.

The train made an emergency stop at Huntingdon station, where armed police were waiting. Before that, a fellow passenger had provided first aid, helping to stabilize Gjoshe’s condition. Once the train stopped, he managed to make his way off and into the station car park, where paramedics took over and rushed him to hospital.

It was only after undergoing surgery that Gjoshe learned the full extent of his injuries. He had sustained seven stab wounds across his shoulder, arm, and bicep. Doctors informed him that the knife had penetrated deep into his muscle and had come dangerously close to damaging a nerve, which could have had severe consequences for his arm function and football career.

During those uncertain hours, Gjoshe feared the worst. He was unsure whether he would be able to play football again. The lack of clarity before surgery added to his anxiety, as he waited to understand the long-term impact of his injuries. Fortunately, medical staff later reassured him that there was no significant nerve damage, describing him as extremely lucky.

In the aftermath of the attack, Gjoshe faced not only physical recovery but also intense media attention. News of the incident spread quickly, attracting widespread coverage. Reporters attempted to reach him while he was still in hospital, prompting staff to move him between wards to maintain his privacy and allow him to recover in peace.

After being discharged, Gjoshe began a lengthy rehabilitation process that lasted several months. Gradually, he worked on regaining strength and mobility in his arm. By March, he was able to return to full training, marking a major milestone in his recovery journey. He described the moment as a huge relief, as it signaled a return to normalcy and a renewed sense of hope.

Despite his physical recovery, the psychological impact of the attack remains. Gjoshe admitted that he has not traveled by train since the incident and is reluctant to do so in the future. The experience has shaken his sense of safety, leaving him cautious and wary.

Professionally, the timing of the attack proved particularly challenging. Gjoshe had just begun his first season with Scunthorpe United after making a significant leap in his career. Having previously played in lower leagues in London, he earned his opportunity after being named Young Player of the Year at Corinthian Casuals.

His performances in pre-season impressed manager Andy Butler, leading to a move to Scunthorpe on non-contract terms. The step up represented a major breakthrough, as he climbed several levels in the football pyramid. He made his debut in the National League Cup against Leeds United’s under-21 team and later featured against Middlesbrough.

To gain more experience, he was also loaned to Bottesford Town under a dual-registration agreement. On the very day of the attack, he had played a match for Bottesford before boarding the train to London.

The support he received after the incident was overwhelming. Scunthorpe fans launched a fundraising campaign, raising £4,500 to assist him during his recovery. Gjoshe expressed deep gratitude for the kindness shown by supporters and the club, emphasizing how much it meant to him during a difficult period.

However, his return to football was overshadowed by another setback. Due to the time he spent recovering, he missed a significant portion of the season. As a result, the club decided not to retain him, informing him that he would not be offered a new contract.

The decision was disappointing for Gjoshe, who felt he had not been given a fair opportunity to prove himself. He had hoped for another season to demonstrate his abilities, especially after overcoming such a major challenge. Nevertheless, he remains determined to move forward.

Now fully recovered, Gjoshe is focused on maintaining his fitness and finding a new club. He describes himself as ready for the next challenge and is optimistic about future opportunities.

His former coach, Nigel James, who played a key role in his development, has expressed strong belief in his potential. James, who has coached top-level talents, considers Gjoshe both a skilled player and a good person. He is confident that the young defender will receive another chance and succeed.

Meanwhile, legal proceedings related to the attack are ongoing. A 32-year-old man has been charged with multiple counts of attempted murder and is scheduled to stand trial later this year.

Despite everything he has endured, Gjoshe remains positive. He refuses to dwell on the past and instead focuses on the future. For him, the experience has reinforced the importance of resilience and determination.

He acknowledges that life is unpredictable and that anything can happen at any moment. This perspective has motivated him to push harder every day and make the most of his opportunities.

Gjoshe’s story is one of survival, courage, and perseverance. From a life-threatening attack to a challenging road to recovery, he has shown remarkable strength. As he looks ahead, his focus remains firmly on rebuilding his career and embracing whatever opportunities come his way.
