Kei Nishikori is set to face off against Daniel Medvedev in the Japan Open’s final match that is set on Sunday.
Kei Nishikori, the home favorite and two times Japan Open winner defeated Richard Gasquet by 7-6 and 6-1 on Saturday while Medvedev on against Denis Shapovalov by 6-3 and 6-3.
Kei Nishikori is going to have the chance to secure his record of having seven consecutive wins in the ATP finals on Sunday. Other than that he has also won the Japan Open two times before and is aiming for the thirds one.
Russian player Medvedev is already enjoying a great tournament as he is the only Russian player in past 16 years to have reached the final from qualifiers.
En route to final, World no. 32 Medvedev managed to defeat Milos Raonic and a highly talented teenage Shapovalov.
F Medvedev manages to win against his next opponent, the world no. 12 Nishikori in the final; then he is going to come up over his own compatriot Karen Khachanov in the ATP rankings and also beocme Russia’s no. 1.
In a press conference, Medvedev said to media that, “I said in one of my interviews as a joke that I want to go higher up than Karen at the end of this year. At that time I was many points far behind him to achieve that aim. However, now I m only one win away from beating him, so yeah it is a good feeling”.
