Liverpool make hard work of 4-1 win

Liverpool booked their place in the FA Cup fourth round with a commanding 4-1 victory over League One side Barnsley at Anfield, but the night proved to be a mixed one for Dominik Szoboszlai, who delivered both brilliance and blunder in an eventful performance.

The Hungarian midfielder lit up the stadium early on with a spectacular long-range strike, yet later gifted Barnsley a goal through an astonishing defensive error. Despite the setback, Liverpool ultimately had too much quality and depth, setting up a home tie against Premier League opposition Brighton & Hove Albion in the next round.

Barnsley nearly stunned the home crowd inside the opening minute when Davis Keillor-Dunn rattled the post with a header, momentarily exposing Liverpool’s vulnerability. However, the early scare appeared to sharpen the hosts’ focus, and they soon took control of proceedings.

Szoboszlai opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a thunderous effort from outside the box that left the Barnsley goalkeeper helpless. The strike showcased the midfielder’s technical excellence and composure, qualities that have made him one of Liverpool’s standout performers this season.

Liverpool doubled their advantage just before the interval through right-back Jeremie Frimpong, who marked his FA Cup debut in style. Cutting inside onto his left foot, Frimpong unleashed a powerful shot from distance that flew into the net, giving the home side a comfortable cushion and underlining their dominance.

However, the match took an unexpected twist moments later. In a moment of baffling decision-making, Szoboszlai attempted a casual backheel pass towards goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. The execution was disastrous, leaving the ball perfectly placed for former Liverpool academy graduate Adam Phillips, who calmly finished to hand Barnsley an unlikely lifeline.

The error drew audible gasps from the Anfield crowd and shifted momentum briefly in Barnsley’s favor. For a team fighting several divisions above their weight, the goal injected belief and ensured the contest remained alive heading into halftime.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot had made six changes to the side that had drawn with Arsenal in the Premier League days earlier, yet still named a strong starting XI. The decision reflected the club’s determination to avoid a repeat of last season’s shock FA Cup exit to Plymouth Argyle.

Barnsley responded admirably after the break, pressing aggressively and contesting every loose ball. They felt hard done by midway through the second half when forward Reyes Cleary went down under pressure from Szoboszlai inside the penalty area. With VAR not in use until the fifth round, play continued, much to the frustration of the visitors and their coaching staff.

Barnsley manager Conor Hourihane was booked for protesting the decision and later criticized Szoboszlai’s backheel mistake, describing it as disrespectful. The Irishman suggested such an action would never be attempted against elite opposition, questioning the midfielder’s professionalism.

Slot dismissed the accusation but did not hide his disappointment. While defending his player against claims of disrespect, the Dutch manager admitted the choice was unnecessary and irresponsible, insisting such risks are unacceptable regardless of the opponent or competition.

Liverpool eventually restored order in the final stages. Substitute Florian Wirtz, who had earlier squandered a clear opportunity, redeemed himself in the 84th minute by curling a precise shot into the top corner. The goal effectively sealed the tie and relieved growing tension around the stadium.

Another substitute, Hugo Ekitike, completed the scoring deep into stoppage time after being set up by Wirtz, adding gloss to the scoreline and ensuring Liverpool progressed comfortably.

After the match, Szoboszlai publicly apologized for his mistake, acknowledging that his lapse complicated matters unnecessarily. He emphasized the importance of unity and squad depth, stressing that every player has a role to play as Liverpool continue their campaign on multiple fronts.

Despite the error, Slot praised the overall commitment and seriousness shown by his team. He highlighted the importance of respecting every opponent and competition, noting that the FA Cup demands focus, discipline, and collective responsibility.

Liverpool’s ability to recover from adversity and assert control late on was a reminder of their experience and depth. While defensive concentration remains an area to refine, the performance offered plenty of positives as the season progresses.

With Brighton awaiting at Anfield in the fourth round, Liverpool will know the challenge will be significantly tougher. Lessons from this match—particularly regarding decision-making under pressure—will be crucial as they look to keep their FA Cup hopes alive.
