Man City second offer worth £120m for Anderson rejected

Manchester City’s pursuit of Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson has taken another significant turn after their second bid, reportedly worth £120 million, was turned down. The Premier League champions have been aggressively targeting the 23-year-old England international as they look to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the new season.

City’s latest offer consisted of an initial payment of £106 million, supplemented by performance-related add-ons. Despite the substantial nature of the proposal, Nottingham Forest remain firm in their stance and are unwilling to part ways with one of their most influential players. The rejection highlights Forest’s determination to retain Anderson, who has become a central figure in their squad since his arrival.

If Manchester City eventually succeed in securing Anderson’s signature at a fee close to their current offer, the deal would set a new benchmark in English football. It would surpass the £105 million Arsenal paid West Ham United for Declan Rice in 2023, making Anderson the most expensive English player in history. Such a move would underline both City’s financial strength and their belief in Anderson’s abilities.

City’s interest in Anderson is not new. The club has been monitoring his progress for a considerable period, dating back to his time as a promising youngster in Newcastle United’s academy. His development since then has been closely followed by City’s recruitment team, who view him as an ideal fit for their style of play under Pep Guardiola.

Earlier this month, City submitted an opening bid for Anderson, which was also rejected by Nottingham Forest. Despite these setbacks, the club remains determined to complete the transfer and is expected to continue negotiations. Anderson himself is believed to favor a move to the Etihad Stadium, which could play a crucial role in any potential agreement between the two clubs.

Manchester United had also shown interest in Anderson, but they are now effectively out of the race. Reports suggest that United were unwilling to engage in a bidding war with their city rivals and were only interested in players who demonstrated a clear desire to join their project. With Anderson leaning towards City, United have opted to withdraw their pursuit.

While transfer discussions continue behind the scenes, Anderson is currently focused on international duty with England. He is part of the squad preparing for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which will be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Despite the ongoing speculation surrounding his future, Anderson has remained professional and committed to his national team responsibilities.

The midfielder recently featured in England’s 3-0 victory over Costa Rica in a friendly match. This game served as the team’s final preparation before their opening World Cup fixture against Croatia on 17 June. Anderson’s inclusion in the starting lineup reflects his growing importance within the national team setup and his ability to perform at the highest level.

Anderson’s rise to prominence has been particularly impressive given the challenges faced by Nottingham Forest over the past season. The club endured a turbulent campaign, going through four different managers. Despite this instability, Forest managed to avoid relegation from the Premier League and also enjoyed a remarkable run to the semi-finals of the Europa League.

Throughout this period, Anderson emerged as one of the team’s standout performers. His consistency, work rate, and technical ability made him a key figure in Forest’s midfield. His performances not only helped stabilize the team during difficult moments but also caught the attention of some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Since joining Nottingham Forest from Newcastle United in 2024 for a reported fee of £35 million, Anderson has made 92 appearances and scored six goals. While his goal tally may not be particularly high, his overall contribution to the team extends far beyond statistics. He is known for his ability to control the tempo of the game, link defense and attack, and provide defensive solidity when required.

Manchester City’s interest in Anderson is partly driven by changes within their own squad. The impending departure of Bernardo Silva at the end of his contract has created a need for reinforcements in midfield. Silva has been a crucial player for City over the years, and replacing him will be no easy task. However, Anderson is seen as a player capable of stepping into that role and continuing the team’s success.

In addition to Anderson, City are also reportedly keeping an eye on other midfield options. Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali is understood to be another player admired by the club. The Italian international has been monitored as a potential long-term target, although Anderson currently appears to be the primary focus of City’s transfer strategy.

The coming weeks are likely to be decisive in determining Anderson’s future. With Manchester City showing no signs of backing down and Nottingham Forest standing firm, negotiations could become increasingly complex. However, Anderson’s preference for a move to City may ultimately influence the outcome.

Should the transfer go through, it would represent a significant milestone in Anderson’s career. Moving to a club of Manchester City’s stature would provide him with the opportunity to compete for major trophies on a regular basis and further develop under one of the world’s most respected managers.

For Nottingham Forest, losing Anderson would be a major blow, given his importance to the team. However, the potential transfer fee could provide the club with substantial resources to reinvest in their squad. Balancing financial gain with on-field performance will be a key consideration for Forest as they navigate this situation.

As the transfer window progresses, all eyes will remain on this developing story. Whether Manchester City can secure their top target or Nottingham Forest can hold on to their prized asset remains to be seen. One thing is certain: Elliot Anderson’s future is set to be one of the most talked-about topics in football this summer.
