Mbappe says he is fourth choice after being jeered
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Kylian Mbappe has found himself at the center of controversy at Real Madrid after surprisingly revealing that he is currently considered the fourth-choice striker at the club. His comments came following Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Real Oviedo, a match in which the French superstar was not included in the starting lineup and instead came on as a substitute in the second half.

The situation drew significant attention, especially given Mbappe’s stature in world football. The 27-year-old forward, widely regarded as one of the best players of his generation, was introduced in the 69th minute at the Santiago Bernabeu. However, instead of receiving a warm welcome, he was met with whistles from sections of the home crowd, reflecting growing frustration among fans.

In his absence from the starting XI, Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa opted to begin the match with Vinicius Junior, Gonzalo Garcia, and Franco Mastantuono leading the attack. This decision raised eyebrows, as Mbappe has been the team’s most prolific scorer this season, boasting an incredible tally of 41 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions.

Mbappe had recently been sidelined due to a thigh injury, which caused him to miss two crucial matches. Among these was a high-profile defeat against Barcelona, a result that ultimately handed their rivals the La Liga title. Despite his absence being injury-related, questions have since emerged regarding his role within the team and his relationship with the coaching staff.

Addressing the media after the match, Mbappe appeared calm but candid. He insisted that he was fully fit and ready to start, yet acknowledged that the final decision rests with the coach. According to him, Arbeloa currently views him as the fourth option in attack, behind Mastantuono, Vinicius, and Gonzalo. While such a statement shocked many observers, Mbappe emphasized that he respects the manager’s decisions and remains committed to improving his performances to earn a starting place.

Interestingly, Arbeloa later denied Mbappe’s interpretation of the situation. The Spanish coach explained that his decision was based purely on fitness considerations. Having only recently returned from injury, Mbappe was not deemed ready to start the match, particularly since it was not a high-stakes encounter requiring immediate risk. Arbeloa clarified that he had discussed this with the player beforehand and suggested there may have been a misunderstanding.

Despite the manager’s explanation, the episode has fueled ongoing speculation about tensions within the club. Real Madrid have endured a disappointing season by their high standards, failing to secure any major trophies. Their struggles have been compounded by a series of setbacks, including the loss to Barcelona that sealed the league title for their rivals. As a result, dissatisfaction has been growing among supporters and within the club’s hierarchy.

Earlier in the week, club president Florentino Perez addressed the media in an unusually direct and forceful press conference. He spoke out against what he described as attempts to destabilize the club, signaling that internal and external pressures are mounting. While he did not single out any individual player, the timing of his remarks coincided with increased scrutiny of Mbappe’s role and performances.

The criticism surrounding Mbappe intensified further when images surfaced of him relaxing on a yacht in Sardinia. The player had been granted time off to recover from his injury, but the optics of the situation did not sit well with some fans, especially as Real Madrid were competing in an important fixture against Espanyol at the time. This fueled perceptions that Mbappe may not be fully committed to the team during a challenging period.

Fan discontent was also visible during the match against Real Oviedo. In addition to the whistles directed at Mbappe, stadium stewards were seen removing a banner that read “Florentino go now,” indicating broader dissatisfaction with the club’s leadership. Such scenes underline the pressure currently facing Real Madrid as they attempt to navigate a difficult season.

Despite the negative reaction from some supporters, Mbappe handled the situation with composure. When asked about the whistles after the match, he acknowledged that such reactions are part of life as a high-profile footballer. He stated that it is impossible to control public opinion, particularly when emotions are running high. Instead, he emphasized the importance of accepting criticism and focusing on improving performances to win back the support of fans.

Mbappe also highlighted the unique challenges that come with playing for a club like Real Madrid. As one of the most famous teams in the world, expectations are always exceptionally high, and players are constantly under scrutiny. He noted that footballers do not always need to understand criticism but must learn to accept it and move forward with determination.

While much of the spotlight was on Mbappe, the match itself provided some positive moments for Real Madrid. Gonzalo Garcia opened the scoring just before halftime, giving the home side a deserved lead. Later in the game, Jude Bellingham added a second goal to secure the victory, ensuring that Madrid ended the match on a positive note despite the surrounding controversies.

Ultimately, Mbappe’s situation at Real Madrid remains a developing story. His comments have sparked debate about his role within the team, his relationship with the manager, and his future at the club. While he continues to deliver impressive individual performances, the dynamics within the squad and the expectations of fans create a complex environment.

As Real Madrid look ahead, resolving these issues will be crucial to restoring stability and achieving success. For Mbappe, the challenge lies in proving his value once again and reclaiming his place as a key figure in the team. Given his undeniable talent and track record, few would bet against him rising to the occasion.
