Four games made up Friday’s NHL preseason scores on September 25, and the headline was a comeback nine months in the making. Tyler Seguin played his first game since tearing his ACL on December 2 as the Dallas Stars beat the Minnesota Wild 2-1, while Jordan Kyrou scored 11 seconds into overtime to give the Washington Capitals a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins. The Colorado Avalanche beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-2 and the New York Rangers routed the New York Islanders 6-1.
Stars 2, Wild 1: Seguin is back
Seguin logged 13:57 of ice time in St. Paul and said afterwards that it felt “like your first game all over again.” Radek Faksa and Thomas Harley scored for Dallas, with Harley’s goal late in the second period proving the winner after Joel Eriksson Ek had levelled for Minnesota. Casey DeSmith made 26 saves for the Stars; Jesper Wallstedt stopped 16 for the Wild.
The worry for Minnesota was defenseman Brock Faber, who did not return for the third period after taking a puck to the head. Coach John Hynes said some of that was precautionary. It was the preseason finale for both clubs.
Capitals 3, Bruins 2 (OT): Kyrou’s first goal in Washington
Kyrou, traded to the Capitals on June 23, finished it on the power play from the top of the left circle only 11 seconds into overtime. Dylan Strome and Tom Wilson had put Washington ahead before Morgan Geekie and David Pastrnak brought Boston level in the third. Jeremy Swayman made 32 saves in a losing effort, and Logan Thompson made 20 for the Capitals.
More NHL preseason scores: Avalanche and Rangers roll
In Denver, T.J. Hughes had a hat trick, capped by an empty-net goal, plus an assist as Colorado beat Winnipeg 5-2. Jaden Schwartz and Cale Makar also scored for the Avalanche, while Nino Niederreiter and Vladislav Namestnikov replied for the Jets. Mackenzie Blackwood made 24 saves.
At UBS Arena, seven different Rangers scored in a 6-1 win to close their preseason: Oliver Bjorkstrand, J.T. Miller, Tye Kartye, Gabe Perreault, Will Cuylle, Mika Zibanejad and Pierre Engvall all found the net, and Igor Shesterkin made 15 saves. Semyon Varlamov allowed six goals on 27 shots for the Islanders.
