Now feels like the right time to start family'

For as long as Simone Magill can remember, football has been at the very centre of her life. From her earliest memories to the peak of an international career, the sport has shaped her identity, her ambitions, and her daily routine. It has taken her across clubs, countries, and major tournaments, and turned her into one of Northern Ireland’s most recognisable sporting figures.

Now, however, Magill is preparing to begin a very different but equally meaningful chapter. The 31-year-old Birmingham City striker has announced that she is expecting her first child in May with her husband, Mark — a life moment that will temporarily shift football from the forefront to the background.

While the pitch has been her home for years, the coming months will be about family, reflection, and embracing a new role beyond the game. Magill admits the decision to step back from football, even briefly, is significant — but one she feels completely ready for.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted at some stage in my life,” Magill explained. “This just felt like the right time for Mark and me to take that step and start a family together.”

Magill’s professional journey began at a young age when she joined Everton as a teenager. Even then, her talent and determination stood out. Over time, she developed into a prolific forward, earning recognition not only for her goal-scoring ability but also for her leadership and work ethic.

Her rise through the ranks of women’s football mirrored the growth of the game itself in Northern Ireland. As opportunities expanded and visibility increased, Magill became a symbol of progress — a player young fans could look up to, and a leader teammates trusted.

Eventually, she reached one of the greatest honours in football: captaining her country. Wearing the armband for Northern Ireland was not just a personal achievement, but a reflection of her commitment, resilience, and influence both on and off the pitch.

Despite the intensity of professional sport, Magill has always spoken openly about life beyond football. She has never hidden the fact that family mattered deeply to her, even as she chased goals and trophies. Balancing ambition with personal happiness has been an ongoing theme throughout her career.

That balance came into sharper focus when she and Mark decided the time was right to share their news. The response, Magill admits, exceeded anything she had ever experienced before.

“We’ve been really overwhelmed by the love and support from everyone,” she said. “People are genuinely excited for us, and that means so much.”

The announcement sparked an outpouring of messages from teammates, coaches, fans, and figures across the football world. For Magill, it was a reminder of how many lives she has touched throughout her career — and how deeply people connect with athletes beyond the scoreboard.

“My phone didn’t stop,” she laughed. “For all the football success I’ve had over the years, I’ve never experienced anything like this when the news broke. We’ve definitely felt the love.”

The reaction highlighted something important: Magill’s impact goes far beyond goals and appearances. She represents perseverance, authenticity, and relatability — qualities that resonate deeply, especially in women’s sport.

As she prepares for motherhood, Magill is realistic about what lies ahead. Football will take a back seat for the next few months, but she does not see this as an ending. Rather, it is a pause — a chance to embrace life in a new way before returning stronger and more fulfilled.

Athletes stepping away for maternity reasons still face challenges, but Magill’s openness contributes to a wider conversation about support, understanding, and equality in professional sport. Her journey reflects how modern footballers are redefining what it means to balance elite performance with personal milestones.

At Birmingham City, Magill remains a respected figure, and her absence will be felt both on the pitch and in the dressing room. Yet her influence continues, serving as inspiration for younger players who are learning that it is possible to pursue both professional excellence and personal happiness.

For Northern Ireland fans, Magill’s story is another reminder of why she is so admired. She has given so much to the game — passion, leadership, and belief — and now she is embracing a new role that brings a different kind of joy.

As May approaches, excitement continues to build for Magill and Mark. The messages of support keep coming, and the sense of community surrounding them grows stronger with each passing day.

While football has defined much of Simone Magill’s life, this next chapter promises something just as meaningful. And when the time is right, the pitch will still be there — ready to welcome back a player whose story continues to inspire both on and off the field.
