Penalty for this? Celtic and Hearts face title decider as McInnes slams ‘disgusting’ call
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Hearts head coach Derek McInnes did not hold back his frustration after a highly controversial late penalty decision handed Celtic a dramatic victory, ensuring the Scottish Premiership title race will go down to the final day. The incident, which occurred deep into stoppage time, has sparked widespread debate and criticism, with many questioning the role of VAR in such a crucial moment.

Hearts appeared to be in a commanding position in the title race after comfortably defeating Falkirk 3-0. At the same time, Celtic were struggling in their match against Motherwell, and a late equaliser for Motherwell had seemingly put Hearts on the brink of securing a historic league title. With Celtic trailing, Hearts looked set to enter the final round with a significant advantage.

However, the situation changed dramatically in the dying moments of Celtic’s match. In the 99th minute, the video assistant referee, Andrew Dallas, intervened and advised referee John Beaton to review a potential handball incident involving Motherwell’s Sam Nicholson. The decision would prove to be decisive.

During the incident, Nicholson challenged for a high ball inside the penalty area. Initial replays suggested that the ball had struck his head rather than his arm, despite his arm being raised. Nonetheless, after a brief review at the pitchside monitor, Beaton awarded a penalty to Celtic. Kelechi Iheanacho stepped up and converted the spot-kick, securing a dramatic 3-2 victory for his side.

The decision immediately drew strong reactions from various quarters, including players, managers, pundits, and fans. Many believed the penalty was unjustified, given the lack of clear evidence that the ball had made contact with Nicholson’s hand. The controversy was further amplified by the significance of the match and its impact on the title race.

Former England striker Gary Lineker took to social media to express his disbelief, describing the call as possibly the worst VAR decision he had ever seen. His comments reflected the sentiments of many who felt the ruling was both harsh and questionable.

Derek McInnes was particularly vocal in his criticism. Speaking after the match, the Hearts manager expressed his anger and disappointment, stating that such decisions seem to consistently go against his team. He suggested that there is a perception that Celtic often benefit from such calls, especially in high-pressure situations.

McInnes described the decision as “disgusting” and implied that Hearts are facing challenges not only from their opponents but also from external factors. He argued that whenever a situation involving Celtic is referred to VAR late in a game, there is an expectation that the decision will go in their favor.

The Hearts manager emphasized that he did not believe the incident warranted a penalty and labeled the decision as extremely poor. He also pointed out that the ruling has significantly altered the dynamics of the title race, making the final match even more critical.

Had Celtic failed to win the match, Hearts would have been in a much stronger position heading into the final game of the season. They could have afforded to lose by a margin of two goals and still clinch the title. Instead, the late penalty has ensured that Hearts must now avoid defeat in their upcoming clash with Celtic to secure the championship.

Despite his frustration, McInnes remained focused on the challenge ahead. He acknowledged that the title race is still alive and expressed determination to achieve a positive result in the final match. He also highlighted the significance of the occasion, noting that it is rare for a team outside of Celtic or Rangers to compete for the Scottish Premiership title.

The upcoming match between Hearts and Celtic is now set to be a decisive encounter, with both teams having everything to play for. For Hearts, it represents an opportunity to win their first league title since 1960, while Celtic will be aiming to capitalize on their momentum and secure another championship.

The controversy surrounding the penalty has also reignited discussions about the interpretation of handball rules in football. According to current guidelines, a player is considered to be taking a risk if their arm is positioned above shoulder height, as this increases the likelihood of being penalized if the ball makes contact with the arm.

However, in Nicholson’s case, there is significant doubt about whether the ball actually touched his hand. Some analysts argue that the trajectory of the ball suggests it came off his head, rather than his arm. This uncertainty raises questions about whether the VAR intervention met the required standard of identifying a “clear and obvious error.”

Critics have pointed out that the available footage did not provide conclusive evidence of handball, making it difficult to justify overturning the on-field decision. The speed with which the referee made his decision after reviewing the footage has also been a point of contention.

Former referees and analysts have largely agreed that the penalty should not have been awarded. They argue that the lack of definitive proof, combined with the context of the incident, makes the decision highly questionable. Some have also suggested that Nicholson’s arm position was influenced by physical contact from a Celtic player, further complicating the situation.

Motherwell’s manager, Jen Berthel Askou, also expressed disbelief at the decision. He described the incident as shocking and stated that he could not understand how it was deemed a penalty. Askou emphasized that even if there had been contact with the arm, it was likely accidental and caused by external factors.

On the other hand, Celtic manager Martin O’Neill defended the decision, stating that it appeared to be a handball based on his initial viewing. He also noted that the referee did not hesitate to award the penalty after reviewing the footage, suggesting confidence in the ruling.

The incident has sparked a broader debate about the consistency and reliability of VAR decisions. Pundits and former players have highlighted similar controversial calls in recent matches, raising concerns about the impact of technology on the game.

Some commentators have described the decision as one of the worst in recent memory, while others have pointed out inconsistencies in how VAR is applied across different matches. The comparison with other high-profile incidents has further fueled the discussion.

Despite the controversy, there are differing opinions. Some former players associated with Celtic have acknowledged that the decision may have been harsh but argued that Nicholson took a risk by having his arm raised in such a position.

Ultimately, the incident has left a lasting impression on the title race and the broader football community. It has underscored the challenges of implementing VAR and the importance of clear and consistent decision-making.

As the season reaches its climax, all eyes will be on the final match between Hearts and Celtic. The outcome will determine the destination of the Scottish Premiership title and potentially mark a historic moment for Hearts.

Regardless of the result, the controversy surrounding the penalty will remain a talking point, highlighting the ongoing debate about fairness and technology in modern football.
