Prestianni denies he racially abused Vinicius
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior has once again found himself at the center of a racism controversy after alleging that Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni directed racial abuse toward him during their recent Champions League encounter in Lisbon. The Brazilian forward responded forcefully after the match, stating that “racists are cowards,” while Prestianni publicly denied the accusation.

The incident occurred during Real Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Benfica at the Estadio da Luz. Vinicius had just scored what proved to be the decisive goal when tensions escalated. Shortly afterward, the 25-year-old approached referee Francois Letexier to report alleged racist comments. As a result, the match was halted for approximately 10 minutes, with players from both teams temporarily leaving the field.

The stoppage cast a shadow over what had otherwise been a tightly contested Champions League fixture. For Vinicius, however, the situation was sadly familiar. Throughout his career, particularly during his time in Spain, he has been subjected to repeated incidents of racial abuse from sections of opposing supporters. Tuesday’s episode, he suggested, was another chapter in a troubling pattern.

Taking to Instagram after the game, Vinicius did not mince words. He described racists as “cowards” who hide behind gestures and attempt to avoid accountability. He criticized what he viewed as an ineffective implementation of anti-racism protocols during the match, stating that the measures taken felt insufficient. He also questioned why he received a yellow card for celebrating his goal, suggesting that the referee’s decisions compounded his frustration.

Prestianni, 20, responded on social media with a firm denial. The Argentine midfielder insisted that he did not direct any racist language toward Vinicius and claimed the Brazilian may have misheard what was said in the heat of the moment. He further stated that he has never engaged in racist behavior and expressed regret over the threats he subsequently received, some allegedly from Real Madrid players.

Benfica issued a statement backing their player. In a post on the club’s official X account, accompanied by video footage of the interaction, they argued that the distance between the players made it implausible for Real Madrid’s squad to have heard any discriminatory comments. The Portuguese club appeared intent on defending both their player and their institutional reputation.

The controversy quickly widened beyond the two players. Benfica manager Jose Mourinho was seen speaking to Vinicius after the winger briefly walked off the pitch following the confrontation. In his post-match press conference, Mourinho revealed that he had spoken to both players but received differing accounts of what transpired. He stressed that he did not wish to take sides without clear evidence.

However, Mourinho also criticized Vinicius’ goal celebration, suggesting it had been provocative and may have incited the crowd. He argued that after scoring such a spectacular goal, the forward should have celebrated respectfully and returned to his position. Mourinho referenced club legend Eusebio as evidence that Benfica cannot be characterized as a racist institution. He emphasized that Eusebio, one of the most iconic figures in the club’s history, symbolizes Benfica’s diversity and heritage.

Mourinho’s remarks sparked significant backlash. Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold described the alleged abuse as “a disgrace to football,” insisting that there is no place for racism in sport or society. He lamented that such incidents overshadow performances and diminish what should be celebrated as sporting achievements.

Former Real Madrid midfielder Clarence Seedorf, working as a television pundit, criticized Mourinho’s comments. Seedorf argued that nothing justifies racial abuse and warned against framing Vinicius’ behavior as a trigger for discriminatory remarks. He suggested that Mourinho may have spoken emotionally but emphasized that racism can never be excused under any circumstances.

Former Arsenal and England forward Theo Walcott also expressed disappointment in Mourinho’s stance. Walcott acknowledged the Portuguese manager’s accomplishments in football but described his response as poorly judged. He felt it was a moment when careful, unambiguous condemnation of racism was required.

On CBS coverage, former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry reflected on his own experiences with racism during his playing days. Henry spoke about the isolation players can feel in such situations, especially when incidents hinge on conflicting testimonies. He noted that gestures such as covering one’s mouth while speaking can appear suspicious and called for transparency in determining exactly what was said.

The matter now rests with UEFA, which confirmed it is reviewing official reports from the match. UEFA stated that if disciplinary proceedings are opened and sanctions imposed, they will be announced publicly via the governing body’s disciplinary channels. At present, no definitive conclusion has been reached.

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe weighed in strongly, suggesting that if the allegations are substantiated, Prestianni should no longer be permitted to compete in the Champions League. Mbappe emphasized that racism must be addressed clearly and decisively, urging UEFA to treat the matter with seriousness.

The episode highlights the broader challenge football continues to face in combating racism. Despite numerous campaigns, protocols, and disciplinary measures, incidents persist. Vinicius’ case is particularly symbolic given his repeated experiences of abuse in Spain and elsewhere. Each new allegation not only affects the individuals involved but also tests the credibility of the sport’s commitment to equality.

As UEFA’s investigation proceeds, the football world awaits clarity. For now, the spotlight remains on accountability and the integrity of anti-racism efforts. The outcome could have significant implications for the individuals involved and for the broader message sent across European football.
