Raducanu withdraws from Rome with post-viral symptoms

British tennis star Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from the Italian Open as she continues her recovery from a post-viral illness that has kept her sidelined from competitive action for the past two months. The decision marks another setback in her return to the WTA Tour, as she focuses on regaining full fitness before stepping back onto the court.

Raducanu, currently ranked as Britain’s number one player, had been training in Rome since the weekend and appeared to be preparing for a potential comeback. She even fulfilled her media obligations shortly before officially announcing her withdrawal, in accordance with WTA regulations. According to the rulebook, players must attend press duties once they are on-site, even if they ultimately decide not to compete. Failure to do so can result in financial penalties.

Despite her withdrawal, there had been no obvious signs beforehand that Raducanu was about to pull out of the tournament. During her media interactions, she spoke positively about her progress and recovery, suggesting that she was moving in the right direction. However, she also acknowledged that she was not yet at full fitness and wanted to return only when she felt completely ready to compete at the highest level.

Raducanu explained that her recovery process has been gradual. After being affected by the illness, she spent nearly six weeks focusing solely on recuperation, with little to no physical activity. Such an extended period away from training has inevitably taken a toll on her physical condition, making it necessary for her to rebuild strength and endurance step by step.

Although she has resumed training in recent weeks, she admitted that returning to peak performance requires time and patience. The demands of professional tennis, particularly on physically challenging surfaces like clay, make it essential for players to be in optimal condition before competing. Raducanu emphasized that she does not want to rush her comeback and risk further setbacks.

Her last competitive match took place at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on 8 March. Since then, she has been absent from several key tournaments, including the Miami Open and clay-court events in Linz and Madrid. These missed opportunities have not only affected her match fitness but could also impact her ranking position.

In preparation for her return, Raducanu has been working diligently behind the scenes. She has spent time training at the National Tennis Centre in London, as well as at a high-performance academy near Benidorm in Spain. These training sessions have been part of her effort to gradually rebuild her fitness and adapt to the physical demands of competitive play.

During her time in Rome, Raducanu was accompanied by her close friend Jane O’Donoghue, a former LTA national coach, as well as physiotherapist Emma Stewart. The presence of her physio during interviews suggested that her recovery remains a key focus, reinforcing the importance of careful management of her health.

Raducanu acknowledged that transitioning to clay courts presents additional challenges. Compared to other surfaces, clay requires greater physical effort due to longer rallies and increased movement demands. This makes it even more important for her to be fully prepared before competing.

She expressed optimism about her progress, stating that she feels she is moving in the right direction. However, she also made it clear that she is not yet at 100% fitness. Her goal is to return when she is completely ready, rather than rushing into competition prematurely.

With her withdrawal from the Italian Open confirmed, Raducanu’s immediate focus shifts to her next potential opportunities. She still has a chance to compete in a WTA event before the French Open, with tournaments in Strasbourg and Rabat scheduled in the coming weeks. Participation in either of these events could provide valuable match practice ahead of the second Grand Slam of the year.

However, if she is unable to compete in these tournaments, Raducanu could miss the entire clay-court season. This would mean an absence of nearly three months by the time the grass-court season begins, which could have significant implications for her form and ranking.

Even if she does return in time for the French Open at Roland Garros, she is likely to enter the tournament as an unseeded player. Currently ranked around 30 in the world, Raducanu is at risk of dropping further in the rankings due to her inability to defend the points she earned from a strong performance in Rome last year.

Another aspect of Raducanu’s recent journey has been her training collaboration with Andrew Richardson. Richardson played a pivotal role in her historic US Open victory in 2021, guiding her to one of the most remarkable achievements in tennis history.

During her time at the training academy in Spain, Raducanu reconnected with Richardson, who now serves as the tennis director there. She spoke positively about their time working together again, highlighting their long-standing relationship and mutual respect.

Despite this reunion, Raducanu clarified that there are currently no plans to reestablish their coaching partnership. While she values his guidance and experience, Richardson has other commitments, and their recent collaboration was more of a short-term arrangement rather than a long-term plan.

Raducanu’s journey since her breakthrough US Open triumph has been marked by both highs and challenges. Injuries, illnesses, and frequent changes in coaching staff have disrupted her progress, making it difficult to maintain consistency on the tour.

However, her determination to return stronger remains evident. By prioritizing her health and taking a measured approach to her comeback, she is aiming to build a solid foundation for future success. Her decision to withdraw from the Italian Open reflects a long-term perspective, focusing on sustained performance rather than immediate results.

As the tennis season progresses, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see when Raducanu makes her return to competition. Whether it comes at a smaller WTA event or at a Grand Slam, her comeback will undoubtedly attract significant attention.

Ultimately, Raducanu’s priority is clear: to regain full fitness and compete at her best. While her absence from recent tournaments is disappointing, it underscores the importance of health and preparation in a demanding sport like tennis.

If she can successfully navigate this recovery period, Raducanu has the potential to reestablish herself as one of the top players in the game. For now, her focus remains on healing, training, and preparing for the challenges ahead.
