Self-doubt to the summit – the rise of England’s Smith

Linsey Smith’s England debut shirt, once hidden beneath her bed, has finally resurfaced — a symbolic moment representing both personal growth and a renewed love for the game. Today, Smith stands as the world’s number one T20 bowler, but her journey to the top has been far from smooth. In fact, her early days in international cricket were marked by intense self-doubt, pressure, and a complicated relationship with the sport she once loved.

Smith made her England debut in 2018 at the age of 23, achieving what many young cricketers dream of. However, instead of feeling fulfilled, she found herself overwhelmed. She has openly admitted that she “hated” the experience at times, revealing the mental toll that elite sport can take. The pressure she placed on herself became unbearable, to the point where she would check the weather forecast before matches and hope for rain — just to avoid playing.

Looking back, Smith acknowledges that her mindset was her biggest challenge. She constantly expected perfection from herself, believing every ball had to be flawless. When things didn’t go as planned, she spiraled into negative thinking. Thoughts like “you’re not good enough” and “this is embarrassing” would dominate her mind, eroding her confidence and enjoyment of the game.

Despite her struggles, Smith’s performance during that initial spell with England was impressive by most standards. She played nine T20 matches, taking 13 wickets with a bowling average under 15 and an economy rate just over six runs per over. For many players, these statistics would be a source of pride, but Smith’s perfectionist mindset prevented her from appreciating her achievements.

Eventually, she lost her England contract — a moment that forced her to confront her relationship with cricket. For someone who had grown up dreaming of playing for her country, the experience was devastating. She admitted that she lost sight of why she started playing in the first place: the joy, camaraderie, and love for the game. Cricket, once her passion, had become a source of stress and negativity.

At her lowest point, Smith even considered walking away from cricket entirely. However, instead of quitting, she chose to rebuild. She rediscovered her love for the sport by playing domestic and franchise cricket, including stints with Northern Diamonds, Hampshire, and in competitions like The Hundred. These environments allowed her to play with freedom and reconnect with the enjoyment she had lost.

In addition to playing, Smith also worked as a community coach for Leicestershire, which gave her a new perspective on the game. Teaching and mentoring others helped her remember the simple pleasures of cricket and reminded her why she fell in love with it as a child.

After five years away from international cricket, Smith earned a recall to the England squad in 2024. This time, she returned as a different person — mentally stronger, more balanced, and better equipped to handle the pressures of elite sport. Under the guidance of head coach Charlotte Edwards, Smith has become a key figure in the team and now enters the home T20 World Cup as the top-ranked bowler in the world.

Although she has grown significantly, Smith admits that some of her old tendencies still linger. She describes herself as highly organized and structured, often planning her days meticulously. In contrast, her teammate Lauren Bell represents the opposite approach — relaxed and carefree. The duo jokingly refer to themselves as “yin and yang,” highlighting how their differences complement each other.

Their partnership extends beyond personality traits to their roles on the field. Smith and Bell form England’s new-ball bowling pair, combining spin and pace to challenge opposition batters. Their chemistry, both on and off the field, has become an important asset for the team as they aim for World Cup success.

Smith speaks fondly of Bell, crediting her with bringing humor and lightness into the team environment. One particular moment stands out, when Smith was eager to try a new variation she had been working on. After finally using it in a match, Bell humorously downplayed the delivery despite its effectiveness, highlighting the playful dynamic between the two players.

From a technical standpoint, Smith’s bowling style is unique. Unlike traditional left-arm spinners who rely on height and bounce, she delivers the ball with a low-arm action, creating a different angle and trajectory. This variation makes her a challenging bowler to face, as batters must adjust to her unconventional style.

Interestingly, Smith has also demonstrated the ability to swing the ball — sometimes more effectively than the seam bowlers in the team. She recalls being told off for not shining the ball properly, only to respond that she was still generating the most movement. Moments like these reflect her growing confidence and willingness to embrace her strengths.

During the off-season, Smith worked closely with spin-bowling coach Tom Smith to further develop her game. One of the key additions to her skill set has been a low-arm under-spin variation, which has proven particularly effective in crucial phases of matches, including the death overs. This willingness to experiment and evolve has been central to her success.

Smith acknowledges that earlier in her career, she may not have had the confidence to try new things on the international stage. However, her experiences over the past few years have changed her perspective. She now approaches the game with a sense of curiosity and openness, focusing on what works best for her rather than trying to fit into a traditional mold.

The rediscovery of her debut shirt symbolizes how far she has come. Once hidden away as a reminder of a difficult period, it now represents resilience, growth, and a renewed sense of purpose. While she hasn’t yet displayed it on her wall, she plans to do so in the future — a testament to her journey from self-doubt to self-belief.

For now, however, Smith’s focus is firmly on the present. With a World Cup on the horizon, she has the opportunity to help England achieve success on home soil. More importantly, she is playing with a sense of freedom and enjoyment that was missing in her early career.

Linsey Smith’s story is a powerful reminder that success is not always a straight path. It often involves setbacks, self-reflection, and the courage to change. From hiding her shirt under the bed to becoming the world’s top-ranked bowler, her journey highlights the importance of mental resilience and staying true to oneself.
