Southampton beat Middlesbrough to reach play-off final

Southampton FC secured a dramatic victory over Middlesbrough FC after extra time at St Mary’s Stadium, earning a place in the Championship play-off final where they will face Hull City on 23 May.

The semi-final tie was packed with intensity and controversy, particularly due to pre-match allegations involving Southampton being accused of spying on Middlesbrough. Despite the off-field drama, the players delivered a gripping contest that remained undecided until the final minutes of extra time.

Following a goalless first leg, the second leg began with high energy. Middlesbrough made a strong start and quickly found themselves ahead thanks to Riley McGree. The midfielder struck early, finishing confidently from a central position inside the penalty area, sending the ball into the bottom corner and silencing the home crowd.

Southampton responded positively to the early setback and gradually grew into the game. Their persistence paid off just before half-time when Ross Stewart restored parity. The striker rose above the defense to head the ball into the net from close range, following a well-delivered cross from Ryan Manning.

The equaliser reignited the atmosphere inside St Mary’s, where emotions were already running high. Tensions between the two teams had been building throughout the match and were further inflamed just before the interval. A heated exchange between Southampton captain Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Middlesbrough defender Luke Ayling led to both managers being warned by referee Andy Madley.

After the break, both sides continued to push for a decisive goal, but neither could break the deadlock during regular time. As a result, the match headed into extra time, where fatigue began to show but the determination remained strong on both sides.

Southampton appeared to have more energy during the additional 30 minutes, controlling possession and creating better opportunities. Their persistence was finally rewarded in the 116th minute through Shea Charles. His delivery from the right flank, intended as a cross, evaded everyone in the box and crept into the far corner of the net, catching the goalkeeper off guard.

The goal sparked wild celebrations among the home fans, as Southampton edged closer to Wembley. Middlesbrough attempted a late comeback and even sent goalkeeper Sol Brynn forward during set pieces in a desperate attempt to equalise. However, Southampton’s defense held firm, securing their place in the final.

This victory means Southampton will return to Wembley for the Championship play-off final, just two years after earning promotion to the Premier League through the same route. Their previous success came during the 2023–24 season when they defeated West Bromwich Albion in the semi-finals before overcoming Leeds United in the final.

Despite their on-field success, the controversy surrounding the spying allegations continues to loom over the club. Southampton recently requested additional time to conduct an internal investigation after being charged by the English Football League. The outcome of this inquiry could potentially result in disciplinary action, adding uncertainty to their campaign.

Head coach Tonda Eckert praised his players for their resilience and determination throughout the match. He highlighted the incredible atmosphere created by the fans and commended his team for maintaining focus despite the distractions.

Eckert emphasized that while the victory was significant, the team’s journey is not yet complete. He reminded his players that the ultimate goal remains promotion to the Premier League and urged them to stay focused ahead of the final.

He also singled out Shea Charles for his development, noting the player’s growth from a promising talent into a mature professional. According to Eckert, Charles’ match-winning contribution was a testament to his progress.

On the other side, Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg expressed deep disappointment following the defeat. He described the loss as one of the toughest moments of his coaching career, acknowledging the emotional toll it had taken on him and his players.

Hellberg praised his team’s efforts across both legs, particularly their dominant display in the first leg and strong start in the second. However, he admitted that Southampton grew stronger as the match progressed, eventually taking control during extra time.

Despite the heartbreak, Hellberg expressed pride in his squad’s overall performance throughout the season. He commended their fighting spirit and the quality of football they displayed, even in difficult circumstances.

For Middlesbrough, the defeat means they will remain in the Championship for another season, having come agonisingly close to reaching the final. Their early lead in the match and competitive performance will make the loss even more difficult to accept.

Meanwhile, Southampton will now prepare for a crucial clash against Hull City at Wembley. With promotion to the Premier League at stake, the final promises to be a high-stakes encounter.

Southampton have been one of the most consistent teams in the division, finishing the regular season strongly with an impressive unbeaten run. Their momentum, combined with their recent play-off success, makes them strong contenders heading into the final.

However, Hull City will provide a formidable challenge, ensuring that Southampton must deliver another top performance if they are to secure promotion.

As the focus shifts to Wembley, all eyes will be on Southampton to see if they can complete their journey and return to the top flight. At the same time, the unresolved off-field issues may continue to cast a shadow over their campaign.
