The Stephen Curry extension is official. The Golden State Warriors have signed their franchise star to a two-year, $116 million contract extension that includes a player option for the 2028-29 season, keeping the 38-year-old in the Bay Area for what could be a 20th NBA season.
Curry, drafted by Golden State in 2009, has spent all 17 of his seasons with the Warriors. The deal was first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania before the club confirmed it.
Stephen Curry extension: the contract details
Curry is already under contract for 2026-27 at $62.6 million, the final year of the one-year extension he signed in August 2024. The new deal adds two more seasons: about $55.7 million in 2027-28, then roughly $60 million in 2028-29, which Curry can choose to take up.
It is the first time in his career that Curry has a player option in one of his deals.
Why Curry took less than the max
Curry was eligible for up to $136.7 million over two years, so he has left around $20 million on the table. Because his 2027-28 salary drops below this season’s figure, the Warriors get more room under the salary cap for summer 2027, a gap reported at between about $38 million and $55 million depending on other roster decisions, including Brandin Podziemski’s contract.
Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy called Curry the best face of any franchise in professional sports history.
Where Curry stands
A four-time NBA champion, most recently in 2022, and a two-time MVP, Curry is the league’s all-time leader in three-pointers. A right knee injury limited him to 43 games last season, when he averaged 26.6 points, 4.7 assists and 3.6 rebounds.
His deal is the latest in a busy stretch of veteran extensions across the league, after Kawhi Leonard’s two-year, $115 million extension with the Toronto Raptors.
