Ten days to decide second place in the Championship?

The battle for the second automatic promotion spot in the Championship is reaching a decisive stage, with Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna and Middlesbrough head coach Kim Hellberg both agreeing that the next 10 days could determine the outcome of the season.

Following a thrilling 2-2 draw between Ipswich and Middlesbrough at Portman Road, Ipswich have climbed back into second place on goal difference ahead of Millwall and just one point above Southampton. Importantly, McKenna’s side also hold a game in hand, giving them a slight advantage in an increasingly tight race.

McKenna admitted that Ipswich face a demanding run-in, with three away matches in quick succession shaping their promotion hopes. He stressed that only an exceptional effort from his squad would allow them to bring the campaign back to Portman Road for a potentially decisive final-day fixture.

Ipswich’s remaining schedule is particularly challenging. They travel to Charlton midweek, face West Brom away at the weekend, and then take on Southampton in what could become a defining clash at St Mary’s on 28 April. McKenna acknowledged that away form has been inconsistent this season, with Ipswich winning just eight of their 20 matches on the road.

However, he pointed out that his team have shown resilience throughout the campaign, including notable victories away from home against strong opponents. Despite this, he admitted that consistency has been an issue, and that achieving promotion would require Ipswich to take their performance levels up another notch in the final stretch.

McKenna emphasised that the next three matches represent a test of character as much as ability. He believes his squad have progressed significantly this season, but the challenge of securing results in such a short period of time will require maximum focus, discipline, and energy.

On the other side of the race, Middlesbrough boss Kim Hellberg admitted his team’s chances of automatic promotion have become more difficult following a seven-game winless run. Once strong contenders at the top of the table, Boro now sit three points behind second place and are relying on other results as well as their own performances to stay in contention.

Hellberg stated that Middlesbrough must win their next two fixtures to remain in the hunt for a top-two finish heading into the final day. Otherwise, they may be forced to shift focus toward securing momentum for the play-offs.

The frustration for Middlesbrough was evident in their draw against Ipswich, where they had led 2-1 before conceding a late equaliser from a Jack Clarke penalty. At one stage, they were within touching distance of second place, but the late setback once again highlighted their recent struggles in closing out matches.

The Swedish manager, who took over from Rob Edwards in November, enjoyed a strong start with four consecutive victories. However, his side’s form has since dipped significantly, picking up only four points from a possible 21, leaving them under pressure in the promotion race.

Despite the downturn, Hellberg remains optimistic that Middlesbrough still have a chance. He explained that expectations around the club were high due to their strong performances earlier in the season, even though few predicted them to be in such a strong position at that stage of the campaign.

He also acknowledged that maintaining belief during a difficult run has been one of the biggest challenges. According to Hellberg, players can sometimes drift away from their strengths when results do not go their way, and part of his job has been to keep the squad focused on their identity and playing style.

Meanwhile, Millwall remain firmly in contention for promotion, continuing to quietly build momentum. Manager Alex Neil believes his side are in a strong position heading into the final fixtures, with performances this season showing they are capable of competing with the division’s best.

Millwall have recorded impressive results against promotion rivals, including victories over Southampton and Middlesbrough, as well as competitive performances against Ipswich. Neil insists that even if his team miss out on automatic promotion, the season should still be considered a success.

He highlighted that only the league leaders have won more games than Millwall this season, underlining their consistency. The team now face a relatively favourable set of fixtures, including matches against mid-table opposition and teams fighting relegation, giving them an opportunity to finish strongly.

Neil has urged his players to focus solely on their own performances rather than external results. With just a few games remaining, he believes maintaining concentration and discipline will be crucial.

Southampton, meanwhile, have emerged as one of the strongest late-season challengers. At one point sitting mid-table and well off the pace, they have produced a remarkable unbeaten run to surge back into contention for automatic promotion.

Their run of 16 league games without defeat, including 13 wins, has transformed their season. This resurgence has placed them firmly in the race for second place, with many now considering them serious contenders.

A dramatic late victory over Swansea further boosted their confidence and belief. Former Southampton forward Jo Tessem noted that the team now carries the mindset of challengers capable of beating anyone in the division.

Southampton’s remaining fixtures include a crucial clash against Ipswich, which could ultimately determine the outcome of the promotion race. Having already been relegated alongside Ipswich last season, both clubs now find themselves battling to return to the Premier League at the first attempt.

As the Championship season approaches its conclusion, the battle for second place has become one of the most intense in recent years. Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Millwall, and Southampton all remain in contention, with each team facing difficult fixtures and high-pressure situations.

The next 10 days are expected to be decisive, with key matches likely to separate contenders from challengers. Whether the race is decided before the final day or goes down to the wire remains to be seen, but the drama is guaranteed.

One thing is certain: promotion will be earned not just through talent, but through resilience, consistency, and the ability to handle pressure at the most critical moment of the season.
