Trump to attend World Cup final and present trophy

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that former United States President Donald Trump is expected to attend the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and participate in the trophy presentation ceremony. The highly anticipated final is scheduled to take place on 19 July at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, one of the marquee venues for the tournament.

Although Trump has not yet been seen at any matches during the competition, there remains a strong possibility that he could appear at one or more games leading up to the final. His attendance at the concluding match, however, appears to be firmly planned, with Infantino expressing confidence that they will jointly take part in the closing ceremony.

The 2026 World Cup, which began on 11 June, is being hosted across three nations: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This marks the first time in history that the tournament is being co-hosted by three countries. The United States is playing a particularly prominent role, hosting 78 out of the total 104 matches scheduled throughout the competition.

Infantino, speaking during an interview with Fox, emphasized his close working relationship with Trump. He noted that the two have developed a strong personal rapport over time and suggested that their collaboration will be visible during the final match ceremony. When asked directly whether they would present the trophy together, Infantino responded affirmatively, indicating that they would indeed share that responsibility.

The FIFA president also hinted at the broader significance of Trump’s presence at the event. Having a former US president involved in such a global sporting spectacle underscores the importance of the World Cup, not only as a football tournament but also as a major international cultural and political occasion.

Despite his expected attendance at the final, Trump has not yet been spotted at any of the matches played so far. This absence has drawn some curiosity, especially given the scale and importance of the tournament being hosted largely on American soil. However, officials have clarified that his demanding schedule has been the primary reason for this.

Andrew Giuliani, who serves as the executive director of the White House’s World Cup task force, provided some insight into Trump’s approach. He explained that Trump enjoys maintaining an element of unpredictability and prefers to keep audiences guessing about his appearances. According to Giuliani, this tendency, combined with his busy commitments, has contributed to his absence from matches up to this point.

In recent weeks, Trump has attended several high-profile sporting events in the United States. Notably, he was present at a UFC event held at the White House, demonstrating his continued engagement with major sporting occasions. Additionally, he made headlines by attending the NBA Finals, becoming the first sitting or former US president to do so.

During that appearance in New York, Trump witnessed game three of the NBA Finals, where the New York Knicks faced the San Antonio Spurs. The Knicks ultimately lost the game 111-115, but Trump’s presence attracted significant attention from fans and media alike. Reports indicated that he received a mixed reaction from the crowd, including some boos, highlighting the polarizing nature of his public appearances.

Trump’s involvement in trophy presentations is not without precedent. Last year, he participated in the Club World Cup final ceremony held at the same MetLife Stadium venue. During that event, he presented the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James following their victory.

However, the ceremony generated some confusion among players and spectators. According to James, Trump remained on the podium longer than expected after handing over the trophy. Players had been informed that he would present the award and then step aside, but instead, he chose to stay on stage. This unexpected decision led to a somewhat awkward moment, as players were unsure how to proceed with their celebrations.

James later commented on the situation, explaining that the team had anticipated Trump’s exit after the presentation. When he remained on stage, it created a moment of uncertainty, although the ceremony eventually continued without major disruption.

This prior experience has led some observers to wonder how the World Cup final ceremony might unfold, particularly given the global spotlight and the involvement of FIFA officials. Infantino’s comments suggest that plans are already in place for a coordinated presentation, which could help avoid similar confusion.

The World Cup final itself is expected to be one of the most-watched sporting events in history, drawing millions of viewers from around the globe. With the tournament being hosted across North America, there has been significant investment in infrastructure, security, and event management to ensure its success.

Trump’s presence at the final adds another layer of interest to an already high-profile event. As a former president and a prominent public figure, his participation in the trophy presentation is likely to attract additional media coverage and public attention.

The collaboration between Trump and Infantino also reflects the intersection of sports and politics. Major sporting events often serve as platforms for political figures to engage with global audiences, and the World Cup is no exception. By appearing at the final, Trump will be part of a moment that transcends sport and resonates on an international scale.

Meanwhile, FIFA continues to emphasize the unifying power of football. Infantino has repeatedly highlighted the role of the World Cup in bringing together nations and cultures. The involvement of political leaders, while sometimes controversial, can also reinforce the significance of the tournament as a global event.

As the competition progresses toward its climax, anticipation is building for the final match. Fans are eager to see which team will emerge victorious and lift the coveted trophy. The presence of high-profile figures like Trump is likely to add to the spectacle and drama of the occasion.

In summary, while Donald Trump has yet to attend a match during the 2026 World Cup, his expected appearance at the final and participation in the trophy presentation have been confirmed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino. With the tournament already making history as a tri-nation event, the final promises to be a memorable conclusion, combining world-class football with significant political and cultural moments.
