Late Goals Continue to Hurt Liverpool as Tottenham Draw Highlights Ongoing Issue
Liverpool F.C. have become painfully familiar with conceding decisive late goals this season, and their latest setback came in a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur F.C..
A stoppage-time equaliser from Richarlison denied Liverpool an important victory that would have lifted them into fourth place in the Premier League standings.
Instead, the Reds were left frustrated after yet another late collapse, a scenario that has occurred repeatedly throughout their campaign.
The disappointment was clear among the players and supporters alike, with many fans voicing their frustration at full-time following another missed opportunity.
Szoboszlai Voices Frustration
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, who had earlier given his side the lead in the 18th minute, admitted that the result left him feeling deeply disappointed.
He explained that the team must quickly regain focus and improve their performances if they want to achieve their season objectives.
Szoboszlai suggested that if Liverpool continue losing points in the closing stages of matches, they may have to settle for qualification for the Europa Conference League rather than competing in the Champions League.
The midfielder also expressed confusion about why the team continues to concede goals at the end of matches.
According to him, the problem has occurred so many times this season that it has become extremely frustrating for the squad.
A Recurring Pattern This Season
Liverpool have now conceded eight goals in Premier League matches during the 90th minute or later this season.
That figure represents the highest number of last-minute concessions the club has experienced in a single campaign.
The previous record was seven goals conceded in the final minute or beyond during the 2010–11 season.
What makes this statistic even more damaging is that every one of those late goals has cost Liverpool valuable points.
Some of the late concessions resulted in defeats, while others turned victories into draws.
Either way, the cumulative impact has significantly affected Liverpool’s position in the league table.
Points Lost Through Late Goals
Five of the eight late goals conceded this season have resulted in defeats.
Liverpool were beaten in the final moments against several opponents, including Crystal Palace F.C., Chelsea F.C., A.F.C. Bournemouth, Manchester City F.C. and Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C..
Three additional late goals resulted in draws rather than wins.
These occurred against Leeds United F.C., Fulham F.C. and Tottenham.
The draw with Fulham was particularly dramatic.
Liverpool had actually scored a late goal themselves to take a 2-1 lead deep into injury time, only to concede again just minutes later.
How the Table Could Look Different
Without those last-minute setbacks, Liverpool’s league position would be significantly stronger.
If the team had managed to hold on in those matches, they would currently have around 60 points.
That total would likely place them comfortably within the top four and close to securing qualification for the next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Instead, Liverpool remain in fifth place in the table.
While that position could still be enough for Champions League qualification depending on other results, the margin for error has become extremely small.
The Reds currently sit just one point ahead of Chelsea, who recently lost their match against Newcastle United F.C..
Meanwhile, Aston Villa F.C. remain two points ahead of Liverpool in fourth place after their defeat to Manchester United F.C..
Carragher Criticises Performance
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher described the draw with Tottenham as extremely damaging for Liverpool’s hopes of finishing in the Champions League places.
He suggested the team had been fortunate that other rivals had dropped points during the same round of fixtures.
However, Carragher argued that Liverpool failed to capitalise on that opportunity.
He criticised the team’s second-half performance, claiming they looked disorganised and lacked control.
According to Carragher, Liverpool had been drifting through the game without urgency and were eventually punished for it.
Defensive Issues Beyond Stoppage Time
The problem for Liverpool extends beyond goals conceded in the final moments.
Throughout the season, they have struggled defensively in the closing stages of matches.
The team has allowed 15 league goals from the 75th minute onwards.
No other Premier League club has conceded more goals during the final 15 minutes of matches this season.
This pattern suggests that Liverpool are finding it difficult to maintain concentration and defensive structure as games approach their conclusion.
Questions About Responsibility
The recurring issue has sparked debate about whether the responsibility lies with the players or the manager.
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot acknowledged the team has conceded too many goals this season.
He admitted the number of goals allowed has made it difficult for Liverpool to accumulate the points expected from a club of their stature.
However, Slot also pointed out that the circumstances surrounding the late goals have varied from match to match.
Some goals resulted from deflections, while others came from defensive errors or second balls following long passes.
Because of these differences, identifying a single cause for the problem has proven challenging.
Supporters Express Frustration
Following the draw with Tottenham, Liverpool supporters voiced their frustration by booing the team at full-time.
Both Slot and Szoboszlai said they understood the reaction from fans.
They acknowledged that supporters expect higher standards from the team.
However, Szoboszlai also urged fans to continue backing the players during a difficult period.
Liverpool will soon face a crucial second-leg match in the Champions League against Galatasaray S.K., where they must overturn a 1-0 deficit.
The players will be hoping the home crowd at Anfield provides strong support during that important fixture.
Young Talent Offers Encouragement
Despite the disappointing result, there was at least one positive for Liverpool.
Seventeen-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha impressed on his first Premier League start.
The teenager completed every one of his attempted dribbles during the match, becoming the first player to successfully complete seven or more dribbles in a Premier League game since Matheus Cunha achieved the feat in 2023.
Ngumoha has already made several substitute appearances this season and has featured in domestic cup competitions.
Manager Arne Slot praised the youngster’s rapid development and suggested his performance could earn him more opportunities in future matches.
Liverpool Must Find Solutions
Liverpool’s repeated struggles in the closing stages of games remain one of the biggest concerns of their season.
If the team hopes to secure Champions League qualification and compete for major honours, solving this issue will be essential.
Maintaining concentration, defensive discipline and composure in the final minutes could make the difference between success and disappointment.
With several crucial matches still to play, Liverpool must quickly find a solution to prevent further late setbacks.
