Leicester City Women Facing Crucial Battle to Avoid Relegation
With only a handful of matches left in the season, Leicester City Women are in a race against time to avoid relegation from the Women’s Super League. Their latest defeat, a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa Women, marked their sixth consecutive league loss and left them rooted at the bottom of the table, three points from safety. (netsports247.com)
The Foxes showed promise early on, taking the lead through Alisha Lehmann, but were unable to maintain their advantage as Villa mounted a second-half comeback to secure all three points.
A Game of Two Halves
Leicester started the match brightly at the King Power Stadium, displaying energy and attacking intent that had often been missing this season. Their efforts paid off when Lehmann found the net, giving them a deserved 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
At that stage, there was genuine belief that Leicester could secure a vital victory—one that would have lifted them out of the relegation zone on goal difference.
However, the second half told a very different story. The team struggled to maintain the same intensity and control, allowing Aston Villa to dominate proceedings. Defensive lapses and a lack of attacking threat ultimately proved costly as Villa turned the game around.
Former England striker Ellen White described the defeat as “gut-wrenching,” highlighting the emotional toll of such a missed opportunity.
A Season of Struggles
This campaign has been a difficult one for Leicester City Women. The defeat against Villa was their 12th in the league, underlining the challenges they have faced throughout the season.
One of their biggest issues has been their inability to score goals consistently. With just nine goals in the league, they have the weakest attacking record in the division—significantly lower than any other team.
Moreover, Leicester have not scored more than once in any league match this season, making it extremely difficult to secure wins or even draws.
Attacking Problems and Injury Concerns
Manager Rick Passmoor has identified attacking improvement as a key priority. However, injuries have made this task even more challenging.
Against Aston Villa, Leicester were without key players such as Denny Draper, Noemie Mouchon, and Jutta Rantala. Meanwhile, Emily van Egmond had only just returned from international duty at the Asian Cup, limiting her impact.
These absences have weakened the squad’s depth, particularly in attack. While Leicester showed promise in the first half against Villa, they struggled to sustain their performance after the break.
The statistics reflect this drop-off. Leicester registered just one shot in the second half—a blocked attempt in stoppage time—and had minimal presence in the opposition penalty area.
Lack of Consistency
Leicester’s inconsistency has been a recurring theme this season. While they have shown glimpses of quality, particularly in isolated moments or halves, they have been unable to put together complete performances.
Against Villa, most of their attacking threat came in the first half, accounting for the majority of their expected goals. After halftime, their inability to create chances allowed Villa to take control and dictate the tempo.
This pattern has cost Leicester valuable points throughout the campaign.
Hope Remains Despite Challenges
Despite their position at the bottom of the table, Passmoor remains optimistic about his team’s chances. He emphasized the importance of unity and belief, stating that the squad’s determination and togetherness remain strong.
“Our destiny is still in our hands,” he said, expressing confidence that Leicester can still turn their season around.
Passmoor also pointed out that a single positive result could boost the team’s confidence and help them play with greater freedom in the remaining matches.
Relegation Twist Offers Lifeline
Interestingly, finishing bottom of the table will not automatically result in relegation this season. The Women’s Super League is set to expand to 14 teams, meaning the 12th-placed team will instead face a relegation play-off.
This gives Leicester a potential lifeline, as they would have one final opportunity to secure their place in the top flight.
However, relying on a play-off is far from ideal, and Leicester will be determined to avoid that scenario by climbing out of the bottom spot.
A Tough Run-In
Leicester’s remaining fixtures present a significant challenge. They still have to face top teams such as Chelsea Women and Arsenal Women, as well as tricky encounters against Everton Women and London City Lionesses.
Their upcoming match against Brighton Women could prove crucial, offering a chance to gain momentum and close the gap on their rivals.
Leicester also have a game in hand, which could work in their favor if they can capitalize on it.
Competition at the Bottom
Leicester are not alone in their struggles. West Ham Women and Liverpool Women are also battling to avoid relegation.
Liverpool currently hold a five-point advantage over Leicester, giving them a cushion, while West Ham remain within reach.
Interestingly, both teams also face difficult fixtures, including matches against top sides like Arsenal and Manchester City Women.
With several key games remaining, including a direct clash between Liverpool and West Ham, the relegation battle is far from decided.
The Need for Confidence and Momentum
Ellen White believes Leicester still have a chance to survive, emphasizing that confidence is a major factor.
“They are not out of it by any stretch,” she said, urging the team to stay united and fight for every point.
According to White, Leicester need a positive result—whether a win or even a strong performance—to rebuild belief and generate momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.
Conclusion
Leicester City Women face a daunting challenge as they battle to avoid relegation, but their situation is not hopeless.
With a few games remaining, a potential play-off lifeline, and rivals also struggling, there is still an opportunity to turn things around.
However, achieving survival will require significant improvement—particularly in attack—as well as resilience, confidence, and a bit of luck.
The coming weeks will be decisive in determining whether Leicester can defy the odds and secure their place in the Women’s Super League.
