Why Bellingham can rescue Real Madrid’s Euro dream

Real Madrid head to Germany for a defining European night as they prepare to face Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final. Trailing 2-1 from the first encounter, the Spanish giants know they must deliver an exceptional performance at the Allianz Arena to keep their hopes of continental glory alive.

The first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu saw Real Madrid struggle for large portions of the match. Bayern Munich controlled the tempo, dictated play, and capitalized on their dominance by taking a two-goal lead. Despite a late resurgence from the home side, the German champions ultimately left Madrid with a narrow but significant advantage.

A key turning point in that first match came with the introduction of Jude Bellingham in the second half. Entering the pitch in the 62nd minute, the young midfielder injected energy, urgency, and creativity into Real’s play. His forward-driving runs and intelligent positioning disrupted Bayern’s structure, helping to spark a comeback that culminated in a crucial goal from Kylian Mbappé.

Bellingham’s Role as a Game-Changer

Bellingham’s influence has been increasingly evident, even during a season disrupted by injuries. The 22-year-old has made 32 appearances across all competitions, contributing six goals and four assists. While those numbers may not fully reflect his overall impact, his presence in midfield has been vital for balance and transition play.

After suffering a hamstring injury in February that sidelined him for several weeks, Bellingham has gradually worked his way back to full fitness. His recent return to the starting lineup in a La Liga draw against Girona FC marked an important step in regaining match sharpness.

Speaking ahead of the decisive clash in Munich, Bellingham acknowledged the mental and physical challenges of recovering from injury. He highlighted how difficult it is not just to regain fitness, but also to rebuild confidence and rhythm. Each minute on the pitch, he explained, plays a crucial role in restoring performance levels.

Real Madrid manager Álvaro Arbeloa has expressed satisfaction with Bellingham’s progress. While noting that fatigue is natural after a long absence, Arbeloa emphasized how important it is for the midfielder to rediscover his feel for the game.

Leadership Beyond the Pitch

Even during his time sidelined, Bellingham remained an integral part of the squad. His leadership qualities and presence in the dressing room have been highly valued by both teammates and coaching staff.

He traveled with the team for their Champions League last-16 tie against Manchester City, despite not being fit to play. Arbeloa praised his commitment, noting that his involvement in team talks and off-field support continues to inspire those around him.

Similarly, Bellingham’s inclusion in the England national football team squad under Thomas Tuchel highlighted his importance. Although he did not feature in matches, Tuchel commended his attitude and influence during training sessions.

A Special Rivalry with Bayern Munich

Facing Bayern Munich carries extra significance for Bellingham. During his time with Borussia Dortmund, he frequently encountered the Bavarian giants in high-stakes matches.

Those experiences were often challenging, including a dramatic Bundesliga title race in the 2022–23 season that Bayern ultimately won on goal difference. Bellingham understands better than most the level of consistency and resilience required to compete against such an elite opponent.

Statistically, Bayern have been one of the toughest teams for him to overcome. In 11 previous meetings, he has managed just one victory, contributing three assists but yet to score. Despite this, there is a growing belief that he could play a decisive role in rewriting that narrative.

High Stakes and “All or Nothing” Mentality

Bellingham has described the upcoming match as a “final,” underlining the immense pressure and importance of the occasion. For Real Madrid, any defeat in the Champions League is seen as unacceptable, given their rich history in the competition.

He openly admitted that the team’s current position is a result of their own shortcomings in the first leg. However, he remains confident that Real have the quality and determination to turn the tie around.

Former Real Madrid star Luis Figo has backed Bellingham to make a difference, pointing to his ability to change games with his creativity and drive. Figo believes the midfielder should be a guaranteed starter, especially in matches of such magnitude.

Tactical Challenges for Real Madrid

Real Madrid face additional complications heading into the match, particularly with the absence of Aurélien Tchouaméni due to suspension. His role as a defensive midfielder is crucial, and replacing him presents a significant tactical dilemma for Arbeloa.

One potential solution involves deploying Eduardo Camavinga in a deeper position. This adjustment was tested in the recent match against Girona, where Camavinga showed comfort and composure in the role.

Another option is to shift Federico Valverde into a more central position, allowing greater attacking freedom for players like Arda Güler and Bellingham. However, this approach comes with trade-offs, as Valverde’s contributions on the right flank are also highly valuable.

Bellingham himself has embraced his versatility, acknowledging that he has played in multiple roles throughout the season. While he enjoys contributing goals, he also recognizes the importance of defensive responsibilities and tactical discipline.

Bayern’s Motivation and Historical Context

Bayern Munich enter the match with strong motivation of their own. Historically, they have suffered more eliminations at the hands of Real Madrid than against any other club in the Champions League.

Real have consistently had the upper hand in recent knockout encounters, winning their last four ties against Bayern. Additionally, the Spanish side have maintained an impressive record at the Allianz Arena, remaining unbeaten in their last four visits since 2012.

This context adds an extra layer of intensity to the clash, with Bayern eager to reverse past disappointments and assert their dominance on home soil.

A Season-Defining Moment

Beyond the Champions League, Real Madrid are also facing challenges domestically. They trail FC Barcelona by nine points in La Liga, with only a handful of matches remaining.

This situation places even greater emphasis on their European campaign. With limited opportunities for silverware, the Champions League represents their best chance to salvage the season.

Arbeloa acknowledged the pressure, stating that the team must approach the match with maximum focus and determination. He emphasized that the stakes could not be higher, describing the fixture as a must-win scenario.

Conclusion

As Real Madrid prepare for one of their most important matches of the season, all eyes will be on Jude Bellingham. His ability to influence the game, inspire teammates, and deliver in crucial moments could prove decisive.

The challenge is immense, but so too is the opportunity. For Real Madrid, it is a chance to reaffirm their status as kings of Europe. For Bellingham, it is another step in his journey toward becoming one of the game’s defining players.
