Why Kane is different at this World Cup – Shearer

Harry Kane’s start to the 2026 World Cup could not be more different from his experience in Qatar four years earlier. Back in 2022, the England captain struggled to make an immediate impact, taking four matches and 269 minutes before even registering a shot on target. His performances suggested fatigue, and there were strong arguments at the time that he needed rest after England’s opening two group games.

Fast forward to the present tournament, and Kane has made a statement right from the beginning. In England’s 4-2 victory over Croatia, he scored twice and looked sharp, energetic, and fully in control of his game. For a striker, there is nothing more important than starting a major tournament strongly, and Kane has done exactly that.

Scoring early in a competition lifts an enormous weight off a forward’s shoulders. It not only boosts confidence but also silences any doubts about form or fitness. Former England players understand this feeling well. Getting on the scoresheet in the opening match, especially as captain and primary goal threat, brings a sense of relief and sets the tone for the rest of the tournament.

Kane would have been particularly eager to make his mark quickly this time. During the build-up to England’s opener, he had watched other global superstars shine. Players like Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, and Lionel Messi all began their campaigns in impressive fashion, each scoring multiple goals and grabbing headlines.

Seeing those performances would have fueled Kane’s determination to join the list of early standouts. That desire was evident when he found the net just 12 minutes into England’s first match. Adding a second goal later in the game only reinforced his impact and importance to the team.

The contrast with his 2022 campaign is striking. In Qatar, Kane finally scored his first goal in the last-16 match against Senegal, after managing just a handful of attempts across four games. This time, he has already exceeded that shot tally in a single match, highlighting both his improved sharpness and England’s more effective attacking approach.

History shows how dangerous Kane can be when he starts well. At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he scored five goals in England’s first two matches, eventually winning the Golden Boot and helping his team reach the semi-finals. With such a strong opening performance in this tournament, there is every reason to believe he could be on a similar path once again.

England’s group-stage schedule also works in his favor. Having already navigated what is likely their toughest match against Croatia, upcoming fixtures against Ghana and Panama present further opportunities for Kane to add to his goal tally. His confidence will be high, and defenders will already be wary of his threat.

Beyond the goals, Kane’s overall condition has been one of the most encouraging aspects of his performance. In previous tournaments, there were concerns about his fitness levels. During the 2022 World Cup and even at Euro 2024, he did not always appear to be at his physical best, which affected his influence on games.

Tactically, England also struggled to maximize his strengths in those competitions. When Kane dropped deep to receive the ball, there was often no one ahead of him to exploit space or finish moves. This left the team lacking a focal point in attack and made it easier for opponents to defend.

Under Thomas Tuchel, however, things have changed significantly. The England manager, who previously worked with Kane at Bayern Munich, understands exactly how to use him effectively. The system now mirrors the approach used at club level, allowing Kane to link play while still having runners ahead of him.

Against Croatia, this tactical shift was clear. Whenever Kane dropped into deeper positions, players like Noni Madueke, Jude Bellingham, and Anthony Gordon surged forward, stretching the opposition defense. Their movement created space and options, enabling Kane to influence the game without sacrificing attacking presence in the final third.

While the system has improved, Kane himself also looks better than ever. He appears fitter, stronger, and more confident, which is hardly surprising given his recent form at club level. Coming into the tournament, he had just completed an extraordinary season with Bayern Munich, scoring an astonishing 61 goals.

Such numbers are remarkable by any standard. Kane himself acknowledged that he had surpassed his previous best by a significant margin, scoring over 20 more goals than in any other season of his career. This level of consistency and productivity highlights why he remains one of the world’s elite forwards.

In earlier eras, reaching 20 goals in a season was considered a major achievement for a striker. Kane has not only exceeded that benchmark but has redefined it, setting new standards for goal-scoring excellence. His current form is a key reason why England’s hopes of success in the tournament are so heavily tied to his performance.

Despite his attacking brilliance, Kane continues to contribute defensively as well. In the match against Croatia, he was seen tracking back and making crucial interventions, including blocking a shot near his own goal in the closing moments. This work ethic reflects his commitment to the team’s overall success.

His mental strength was also on display during the game. Kane scored his first goal from a penalty that had to be retaken after an initial miss. Taking a second penalty in the same match is a challenging situation, as it requires overcoming doubt and pressure.

The psychological battle between the penalty taker and the goalkeeper intensifies in such moments. Both attempt to anticipate each other’s decisions, while the player must also manage internal doubts about missing again. Kane handled the situation with composure, placing his second attempt in the same spot and scoring confidently.

His second goal, a well-taken header, further demonstrated his quality. The delivery from Declan Rice was excellent, but Kane’s anticipation, positioning, and execution made the finish look effortless. It was a reminder of his all-around ability as a striker.

With such a strong start, it is only natural that Kane will be thinking about winning another Golden Boot. He has already achieved this honor once, and the opportunity to do so again will undoubtedly motivate him.

He is not alone in this pursuit. Players like Mbappe, Messi, and Haaland will also be aiming for the top scorer award. Each of them plays in a system designed to maximize their strengths, just as England are now doing with Kane.

While it is still early in the tournament, the competition for the Golden Boot promises to be intense. For England, however, the primary objective remains team success. If Kane continues to perform at this level, he will play a crucial role in their progress.

Ultimately, his early form is a positive sign. A confident and in-form Kane significantly increases England’s chances of going deep into the tournament. If he maintains this momentum, both individual and team success could be within reach.
