Why Man City would be foolish to let Shaw leave

Khadija Shaw once again demonstrated her immense value to Manchester City, delivering a stunning late performance that underlined exactly why the club cannot afford to lose her this summer. In a dramatic Women’s FA Cup semi-final clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Shaw transformed the game in a matter of minutes, scoring twice to seal a remarkable comeback victory and book City’s place in the final.

The Jamaican striker needed just 12 minutes to turn the tie on its head. With City trailing 2-0 late in the match, Shaw stepped up when it mattered most. She first found the equaliser deep into stoppage time, reigniting hope for her side. Then, in extra time, she delivered the decisive blow, scoring in the 103rd minute to complete a sensational turnaround and secure a 3-2 win.

What made her performance even more impressive was the fact that things had not gone her way earlier in the game. Shaw had missed a number of opportunities and struggled to make her usual impact during Chelsea’s dominant opening spell. The home side looked firmly in control, creating chances and establishing a comfortable lead that seemed difficult to overturn.

Adding to the tension, Shaw suffered a heavy knock just before half-time, requiring medical attention on the pitch. For a moment, there were concerns that her evening might end prematurely. As she slowly made her way to the sidelines, Chelsea fans taunted her with chants suggesting she would be joining them next season — a reflection of the growing speculation surrounding her future.

Reports earlier in the week indicated that contract renewal talks between Shaw and Manchester City had broken down. As a result, she is currently expected to leave the club at the end of the season unless a last-minute agreement is reached. Chelsea are believed to be among the clubs closely monitoring the situation, making this encounter even more significant.

Despite the pressure and earlier setbacks, Shaw showed remarkable resilience. When City needed inspiration, she delivered. After Mary Fowler pulled a goal back to make it 2-1, Shaw seized her moment. In the dying seconds of normal time, she fired a powerful strike past goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, silencing the home crowd and sending the match into extra time.

Her celebration reflected both relief and determination, as she slid on her knees and roared with emotion. The City supporters responded with equal passion, fully aware of the importance of her contribution.

In extra time, Shaw completed her heroics with a perfectly timed header that proved to be the match-winner. It was a defining moment that highlighted her ability to deliver under pressure, even when she is not at her best. Her teammates surrounded her at full-time, encouraging her to soak in the applause from the travelling fans.

Manchester City manager Andree Jeglertz praised Shaw’s mentality and influence after the match. He emphasized that top forwards are not defined by perfection but by persistence — the ability to keep going despite missed chances and ultimately make a decisive impact.

Shaw’s record at City speaks for itself. She has consistently been one of the most prolific goal scorers in the Women’s Super League, and this season is no exception. With 19 goals in 21 appearances, she is on course to claim a third consecutive Golden Boot. Additionally, she is just one goal away from making history as the first player to score 20 or more goals in three different WSL seasons.

Her importance to the team extends beyond statistics. Shaw’s physical presence, movement, and clinical finishing make her a constant threat to opposition defenses. She has been City’s top scorer for four consecutive seasons, underlining her consistency and reliability.

Just days before this match, Shaw was named the Football Writers’ Association Women’s Footballer of the Year, further recognition of her outstanding performances throughout the campaign.

While City fans celebrated the victory, there was an underlying sense of concern about what the future might hold. Shaw’s performance served as a reminder of what the club could lose if she departs — and what a potential suitor like Chelsea could gain.

Manager Jeglertz acknowledged the uncertainty but remained optimistic about the club’s future regardless of the outcome. He expressed his desire to keep Shaw but admitted that the decision ultimately lies beyond his control. He also վստահed that the club would continue to build a competitive squad capable of challenging for titles next season.

Former Chelsea midfielder Karen Carney also weighed in on the situation, highlighting Shaw’s unique ability to change games single-handedly. She pointed out that very few players can guarantee such impact, making Shaw one of the most valuable forwards in the game today.

Carney suggested that Shaw’s influence goes beyond just scoring goals. Even after missing chances, she remains a constant danger — always capable of producing a decisive moment out of nothing.

Ultimately, Shaw’s performance against Chelsea was more than just a match-winning display. It was a statement — a clear demonstration of her world-class quality and her ability to deliver when it matters most.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Manchester City face a crucial decision. Allowing Shaw to leave would mean losing not only a prolific goal scorer but also a player who thrives in high-pressure situations and consistently delivers on the biggest stages.

Whether she stays or moves on, one thing is certain: Khadija Shaw is a game-changer. And as she proved once again at Stamford Bridge, players like her are incredibly difficult to replace.
