On Friday, the last year’s winner of the ATP Finals, Alexander Zverev managed to get the last spot of the ATP Finals semis after defeating his opponent, Daniil Medvedev. In wake of Zverev reaching the semis, Nadal got eliminated of the season-ending tournament.
Zverev got the win over Medvedev in their match by 6-7, 6-4 and 7-5 to reach the semifinals of the ATP Finals for the second year in a row.
However, due to the win of Zverev, Tsitsipas and Nadal are both left with an equal ATP Finals round-robin record of 2-1. Due to the tiebreaker rules of the tournament, Nadal got ousted out of the tournament.
This means that only one out of the Big Three of the tennis made it to the semifinals after Djokovic got ousted by Federer. Up next for Federer is an ATP Final’s first semifinals match against Stefanos Tsitsipas
.
Zverev said of Medvedev, “these young players are playing much better tennis than they had been paying last year. Nobody had expected that Nadal would get ousted from the group. Our group this year was really very tough. Now for me and Stefanos to be advancing to the semis, nobody would have guessed that.”
The last year‘s winner of the ATP Finals, Zverev got the win at that time by overtaking the Tennis great Roger Federer in the semifinals first and then Novak Djokovic in their final. For Zverev’s this year’s first semifinals match will be against Dominic Thiem.
Talking about Thiem, he said, “Dominic is playing really great tennis this year and it is going to be a really difficult match between us. From here on out, we will see how the tournament goes.”
Before Tsitsipas had made it to the semis but he still continued to push Nadal in their 3 hours long match.
Despite getting ousted of the ATP Finals, Nadal has managed to finish as the year-end no. 1 for the 5th time.
