Vonn ‘making progress’ after third leg operation

American skiing legend Lindsey Vonn has confirmed she is “making progress” following a successful third surgical procedure on the broken leg she suffered during a dramatic crash at the Winter Olympics. The injury occurred during the downhill event in Cortina, cutting short what many had hoped would be a fairytale conclusion to her remarkable comeback story.

Vonn, one of the most decorated alpine skiers in history, endured the accident just nine days after previously rupturing ligaments in her left knee. Despite that setback, she was determined to compete at what she had announced would be her fifth and final Olympic Games. However, only 13 seconds into her downhill run, disaster struck when she clipped a gate at high speed and crashed heavily onto the piste.

Medical teams responded immediately, and Vonn was airlifted from the slope before being transported to a hospital in Treviso. Doctors later diagnosed her with a complex fracture of the tibia in her left leg — a serious injury requiring immediate surgical intervention.

In an emotional message shared on Instagram, Vonn revealed she had undergone a third operation related to the injury and confirmed that the procedure had been successful.

“I had my third surgery today and it was successful,” she wrote. “Success today has a completely different meaning than it did a few days ago. I’m making progress and while it is slow, I know I’ll be OK.”

Her words reflected both resilience and perspective. For an athlete accustomed to chasing podium finishes and gold medals, success now means steady recovery and healing.

Vonn also expressed deep gratitude for the support she has received since the crash. She thanked the medical professionals responsible for her care, as well as her close circle of family and friends who have remained by her side during this challenging time. Additionally, she acknowledged the overwhelming encouragement from fans across the globe.

“Thankful for all of the incredible medical staff, friends, family who have been by my side and the beautiful outpouring of love and support from people around the world,” she added.

Even while recovering in hospital, Vonn made sure to congratulate her Team USA teammates competing at the Games. She said their performances have provided her with motivation and inspiration during recovery.

“Also, huge congrats to my team-mates and all of the Team USA athletes who are out there inspiring me and giving me something to cheer for,” she wrote.

The injury is a heartbreaking setback in what had already been one of the most remarkable comeback stories in recent sporting history. Vonn originally retired in 2019 as the most successful female alpine skier of her era. Over the course of her career, she accumulated an extraordinary collection of titles and podium finishes, including an Olympic downhill gold medal in 2010.

However, her career was also defined by resilience in the face of repeated injuries. Vonn suffered multiple serious leg injuries throughout her competitive years, undergoing numerous surgeries. The physical toll eventually led her to step away from the sport.

After retiring, she underwent a partial knee replacement on her right knee — a procedure that made her surprise return to professional skiing in 2024 even more astonishing. Many observers questioned whether a return at the highest level would be possible after such an invasive surgery.

Yet Vonn defied expectations once again. Following her comeback, she delivered a string of impressive performances on the World Cup circuit. She achieved eight podium finishes, including two gold medals, proving that her competitive spirit and skill had not diminished.

Her strong results leading into the Olympic season reignited hopes of a storybook ending. Many believed she had the experience and form to secure another Olympic medal at what she had declared would be her final appearance on the Games stage.

However, fate intervened even before the Olympics began. In Switzerland, during the final World Cup race before the Games, Vonn ruptured her ACL. For many athletes, such an injury would have ruled out Olympic participation altogether.

But true to her determined character, Vonn refused to give up. She pushed through rehabilitation at remarkable speed and made the bold decision to compete in Cortina — a venue where she had previously enjoyed immense success and cherished memories.

Her determination to race despite limited recovery time reflected her relentless pursuit of excellence. While the decision ultimately resulted in the devastating crash, Vonn has since made it clear she has no regrets.

On Monday, she stated: “I have no regrets. I dared to dream and had worked so hard to achieve it.”

That mindset captures the essence of her career. Vonn has consistently pushed boundaries, challenged expectations, and embraced risks in pursuit of greatness. Even in the face of severe injury, she continues to demonstrate strength and positivity.

The road to recovery from a complex tibia fracture can be lengthy and demanding. Rehabilitation will likely require months of careful medical supervision, physiotherapy, and gradual strengthening. However, given Vonn’s history of overcoming setbacks, few would bet against her approaching this challenge with the same dedication she has shown throughout her career.

While her Olympic campaign ended prematurely, her legacy in alpine skiing remains untouchable. She inspired a generation of athletes, redefined standards of performance, and proved that resilience can extend a career far beyond expectations.

For now, the focus is not on medals or podiums but on healing. Vonn’s update offers reassurance that she is moving forward, even if progress is gradual.

Her story continues to resonate far beyond the slopes — a testament to courage, perseverance, and the willingness to chase dreams despite the risks involved.
