Real Madrid tie halted over Vinicius racism allegation

Real Madrid’s Champions League knockout phase play-off clash against Benfica was dramatically interrupted for 10 minutes after Vinicius Junior reported alleged racist abuse during the match in Lisbon.

The incident occurred in the second half at the Estadio da Luz, shortly after the Brazilian forward had given Real Madrid a 1-0 lead with a superb goal. Referee Francois Letexier made the now-recognizable crossed-arms gesture — a signal introduced by FIFA in May 2024 to indicate reports or observations of racist abuse.

Match Halted After Allegation

Following his goal in the 50th minute, Vinicius celebrated near the corner flag with his trademark dance. Objects were reportedly thrown from the crowd during the celebration, increasing tensions on the pitch. The situation escalated after an interaction between Vinicius and Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni near the halfway line.

Visibly upset, Vinicius approached Letexier while gesturing toward Prestianni. According to an official Real Madrid statement, the Brazilian informed the referee that he had been subjected to racial abuse by the Argentine winger. Letexier responded by making the crossed-arms signal and halting play.

Vinicius then walked off the field in protest, with his Real Madrid team-mates immediately following him. Both squads temporarily left the pitch as stadium officials assessed the situation. The match remained suspended for approximately 10 minutes before restarting in the 60th minute.

Despite the disruption, the game continued to its conclusion. Real Madrid held onto their 1-0 advantage after 12 minutes of added time. However, further controversy unfolded during stoppage time when an object thrown from the stands struck Vinicius on the arm.

Vinicius Speaks Out

After the match, Vinicius took to Instagram to express his frustration and anger. He condemned racism strongly, describing racists as “cowards” and stating that such behavior has become an all-too-familiar part of his career.

He also criticized the decision to book him for excessive celebration after scoring, saying he did not understand the reasoning behind the yellow card. Furthermore, he described the anti-racism protocol applied during the match as poorly executed and ineffective.

Vinicius emphasized that incidents like this are not new to him or his team, reinforcing the emotional toll repeated abuse has taken on him over the years.

Prestianni Denies Allegation

Prestianni swiftly denied the accusation via social media. The 20-year-old stated that he did not direct any racist language toward Vinicius and suggested that the Brazilian may have misunderstood what was said. He also expressed regret over threats he claimed to have received from Real Madrid players following the incident.

The conflicting accounts mean the case will likely be reviewed by UEFA, which oversees the Champions League and has established clear anti-racism protocols.

Understanding the Anti-Racism Protocol

UEFA introduced its three-step anti-racism protocol in 2009 to combat discriminatory behavior inside stadiums. The system grants referees authority to take escalating action if racist abuse occurs.

The first step involves stopping the match and issuing a public address announcement demanding that discriminatory behavior cease. If the abuse continues, the referee halts the game again for five to 10 minutes, instructing players to leave the field while another announcement is made. Should the misconduct persist after the second restart, the referee has the authority to abandon the match entirely.

Any abandonment decision is made after ensuring the safety of players and spectators. The matter is then referred to UEFA’s disciplinary body for investigation and potential sanctions.

In this case, Letexier followed the first two stages by halting play and temporarily removing players from the pitch. Since the match resumed and concluded, it did not escalate to abandonment.

A Troubling Pattern

Unfortunately, this episode is just the latest in a long list of racist incidents involving Vinicius throughout his professional career.

In September 2022, supporters outside Atletico Madrid’s stadium directed racist chants at him ahead of a derby. The club later condemned the actions of what it described as a minority of fans.

In January 2023, an effigy of Vinicius was hung from a bridge near Real Madrid’s training ground. Four individuals were fined and banned from stadiums for two years.

In May 2023, Vinicius was racially abused during a league match at Valencia. That same year, Real Madrid filed complaints with Spanish authorities, treating incidents as hate crimes.

In March 2024, the player publicly admitted he felt “less and less” like playing football due to repeated abuse. However, he later described himself as a “tormentor of racists” after several perpetrators received prison sentences.

In May 2025, five individuals were handed suspended prison sentences in what was described as an unprecedented ruling in Spain — marking the first criminal convictions for racism at a football match in the country.

The Lisbon incident now adds another chapter to this troubling history.

Broader Implications

Racism remains one of football’s most persistent issues despite ongoing campaigns and stricter disciplinary measures. The introduction of the crossed-arms gesture by FIFA in 2024 was intended to create a universal and visible response mechanism for referees dealing with abuse.

However, Vinicius’ criticism of the protocol suggests that while procedures exist on paper, their execution and effectiveness are still being questioned by players directly affected.

The incident also highlights the emotional burden on athletes who repeatedly experience discrimination. Each new case reopens old wounds and reignites debates about whether football authorities are doing enough.

UEFA is expected to review reports from the match and may issue disciplinary measures depending on its findings. Any sanctions would be announced publicly through official channels.

Final Thoughts

The 10-minute stoppage in Lisbon was more than a pause in play — it was a stark reminder that racism continues to cast a shadow over elite football. While Real Madrid secured victory on the scoreboard, the larger battle against discrimination remains ongoing.
