Substitute Doue inspires PSG to comeback at Monaco

Substitute Desire Doue played a decisive role as reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain produced a remarkable comeback to defeat AS Monaco in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League knockout phase play-off clash.

The encounter at Stade Louis II delivered high drama, with PSG overturning a two-goal deficit against a Monaco side that was eventually reduced to 10 men. The victory marked a historic occasion as it was the first-ever European meeting between the two French clubs.

PSG manager Luis Enrique made a bold selection decision by naming 20-year-old forward Desire Doue among the substitutes. However, circumstances forced an early change after PSG found themselves in serious trouble. With Monaco racing into a commanding lead, Enrique introduced Doue midway through the first half in place of Ousmane Dembele, and the substitution proved to be a turning point.

Monaco made a dream start, stunning the visitors inside the opening minute. American striker Folarin Balogun rose to meet a pinpoint cross from Aleksandr Golovin, guiding a close-range header beyond goalkeeper Matvey Safonov. The early breakthrough set the tone for a high-intensity first half.

Despite being the lowest scorers among the 24 remaining teams in the competition, Monaco doubled their advantage in the 18th minute. Balogun capitalized on a defensive lapse, racing clear through the center before calmly slotting the ball past Safonov. The goal marked his 10th of the season and left PSG reeling.

However, the momentum began to shift soon after. Four minutes following Monaco’s second goal, PSG were handed a golden opportunity to respond when Wout Faes brought down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the penalty area. The referee pointed to the spot, offering the visitors a lifeline.

Midfielder Vitinha, who had previously missed a crucial penalty against Newcastle United during the league phase, stepped up once again. Unfortunately for PSG, history repeated itself. Monaco goalkeeper Philipp Kohn guessed correctly, diving sharply to his right to deny Vitinha and preserve Monaco’s two-goal cushion.

Yet PSG refused to collapse. In the 29th minute, just two minutes after coming off the bench, Doue announced his arrival in spectacular fashion. Receiving the ball in a tight angle inside the area, the young Frenchman unleashed a powerful strike that clipped the post before finding the net. The goal breathed life into PSG and changed the dynamic of the contest.

Doue continued to torment Monaco’s defense. Four minutes before halftime, he attempted a long-range effort that Kohn managed only to parry into the path of Achraf Hakimi. The Moroccan full-back reacted swiftly, smashing a half-volley into the net to level the score. It was Hakimi’s first Champions League goal of the campaign and ensured PSG entered the break with renewed confidence.

The second half brought further drama. Only seconds after the restart, Monaco suffered a major setback when Golovin was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Vitinha. Initially shown a yellow card, the referee reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor before upgrading the decision to a red card. It was Golovin’s second sending-off in just four days, compounding Monaco’s frustrations.

With the numerical advantage firmly in their favor, PSG began to dominate possession and dictate the tempo. The visitors pressed relentlessly, seeking to capitalize on Monaco’s reduced defensive resistance.

Their persistence paid off in the 67th minute. Rising midfield talent Warren Zaire-Emery displayed composure beyond his years by teeing up Doue inside the penalty area. The substitute forward made no mistake, firing past Kohn to complete the turnaround and secure his second goal of the evening.

In doing so, Doue etched his name into PSG’s Champions League history. He became the first substitute since October 2019 to score two or more goals in a single Champions League match for the Parisian club. His impact not only rescued PSG from a precarious position but also underlined his growing importance within the squad.

The comeback victory was particularly satisfying for PSG, who had previously suffered defeat to Monaco at the same venue in a Ligue 1 encounter back in November. This time, however, they demonstrated resilience, character, and tactical adaptability to overturn adversity on the European stage.

Manager Luis Enrique will undoubtedly take confidence from his side’s reaction to early setbacks. Despite conceding twice within the opening 20 minutes and missing a penalty, PSG maintained belief and composure. The tactical adjustment of introducing Doue earlier than planned proved decisive, highlighting Enrique’s willingness to make bold in-game decisions.

For Monaco, the defeat will feel like a missed opportunity. Their clinical start and disciplined structure initially placed them in a commanding position. However, the red card to Golovin significantly altered the course of the match. Reduced to 10 men for nearly the entire second half, they struggled to contain PSG’s attacking depth and creativity.

The tie remains finely poised ahead of the return leg. PSG will carry a one-goal advantage into the second meeting, which is scheduled to take place in Paris on Wednesday, 25 February at 20:00 GMT. With home support behind them and momentum on their side, the French champions will aim to finish the job and progress further in Europe’s elite competition.

Nevertheless, Monaco have shown they possess the quality to trouble PSG, particularly in transition. The second leg promises to deliver further excitement as both teams battle for a place in the next round.

For now, the spotlight firmly belongs to Desire Doue. Thrust into action earlier than expected, the 20-year-old demonstrated composure, skill, and maturity beyond his years. His two-goal performance may well be remembered as a defining moment in his burgeoning European career.
