Self-doubt to the summit – the rise of England’s Smith

Linsey Smith’s England debut shirt, once tucked away and hidden beneath her bed for years, has finally re-emerged into the light. The garment symbolizes more than just her first step into international cricket—it represents a complex emotional journey marked by self-doubt, pressure, growth, and eventual redemption.

Now 31 years old and ranked as the world’s number one T20 bowler, Smith’s rise to the top has been anything but straightforward. When she first broke into the England team in 2018 at the age of 23, she carried with her the dreams of a young cricketer who had always aspired to represent her country. However, instead of enjoying the moment, Smith found herself overwhelmed by the magnitude of the opportunity.

Despite delivering impressive performances—taking 13 wickets in nine T20 matches with an excellent bowling average below 15 and maintaining a controlled economy rate—Smith struggled internally. From an outsider’s perspective, her early international career could easily be labeled a success. Yet, for Smith, it felt far from it.

She has openly admitted that she “hated” her initial experience at the international level. The pressure she placed on herself became unbearable. Instead of embracing the challenge, she became trapped in a cycle of negative thinking. On some occasions, she would even check the weather forecast before matches, hoping that rain would cancel the game and spare her from playing.

This mindset stemmed from her perfectionist nature. Smith expected every delivery she bowled to be flawless—an unrealistic standard in any sport, let alone at the highest level. Whenever things didn’t go as planned, her thoughts spiraled into self-criticism. She would question her abilities, labeling herself as “not good enough” and viewing minor setbacks as major failures.

Eventually, her struggles off the field began to overshadow her achievements on it. After her initial spell with England, she lost her central contract. This moment proved to be a turning point. The young girl who once loved cricket and dreamed of playing for England found herself disconnected from the game she cherished.

Smith admits that during this period, cricket stopped being enjoyable. The joy that had once fueled her passion was replaced by stress and anxiety. At her lowest point, she even considered stepping away from the sport entirely.

However, instead of giving up, Smith gradually rebuilt her relationship with cricket. She rediscovered her love for the game by playing domestic and franchise cricket. Her time with teams like Northern Diamonds, Hampshire, and in competitions such as The Hundred played a crucial role in her revival. Additionally, working as a community coach for Leicestershire helped her reconnect with the fundamentals of the sport and appreciate it from a different perspective.

After spending five years away from international cricket, Smith earned a recall to the England squad in 2024. This second chance came at a time when she was mentally stronger and more self-aware. Under the guidance of head coach Charlotte Edwards, Smith has transformed into a key figure in the team.

Today, she enters a home T20 World Cup not just as a squad member, but as one of England’s most important players—and the world’s top-ranked bowler in the format.

Smith acknowledges that she is now a completely different person compared to her younger self. While some of her perfectionist tendencies still exist, she has learned how to manage them more effectively. She now approaches the game with a healthier mindset, balancing discipline with enjoyment.

A significant part of her journey involves her partnership with fellow England bowler Lauren Bell. The duo, who often open the bowling together, share a contrasting dynamic that Smith describes as “yin and yang.” While Smith is highly organized and methodical, Bell brings a more relaxed and carefree attitude.

This contrast has proven beneficial. Bell’s lighthearted personality helps ease Smith’s intensity, while Smith’s structured approach provides balance to their partnership. Together, they form a formidable new-ball pairing, one that will be crucial to England’s ambitions in the T20 World Cup.

Their collaboration extends beyond international cricket, as they have also played together for Hampshire and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in franchise competitions. Their on-field chemistry and off-field camaraderie have strengthened their effectiveness as a bowling unit.

Smith’s bowling style further sets her apart from other spinners. Unlike traditional left-arm spinners who rely on height and bounce, Smith delivers the ball with a distinctive low-arm action. This unique approach allows her to generate different angles and variations, making her a challenging opponent for batters.

During the recent season, she has even demonstrated the ability to swing the ball—sometimes more effectively than seam bowlers. This unexpected skill adds another dimension to her game, making her even more versatile.

One notable development in her bowling arsenal is a low-arm under-spin variation, which she worked on during the winter with spin-bowling coach Tom Smith. This delivery has become particularly useful in high-pressure situations, such as bowling in the final overs of a match.

Smith embraces her unconventional style rather than trying to conform to traditional expectations. She firmly identifies herself as a left-arm spinner, even though her methods may differ from others in the role.

This willingness to experiment and adapt highlights her growth as a cricketer. In the past, such experimentation might have added to her anxiety. Now, she views it as an opportunity to improve and enjoy the game.

As England prepares for the T20 World Cup, Smith and Bell are expected to play pivotal roles. Their contrasting styles—spin and seam, structure and spontaneity—create a balanced and effective partnership.

Smith’s journey from self-doubt to self-belief serves as an inspiring example of resilience. The England shirt that once symbolized pressure and fear now represents achievement and pride. Although it has not yet been displayed on her wall, Smith plans to give it the recognition it deserves.

For now, her focus remains on the upcoming World Cup. With her newfound confidence and refined skills, she is determined to contribute to England’s success on the global stage.
