McIlroy starts strongly as Shinnecock bares its teeth

The opening round of the US Open once again demonstrated why Shinnecock Hills is regarded as one of the most demanding golf courses in the world. Difficult weather conditions, strong winds, thick rough, and lightning-fast greens combined to test the world’s best golfers from the very first shot of the championship.

A two-hour delay caused by heavy fog prevented play from starting on schedule, but once conditions improved, players faced an entirely different challenge. Gusting winds sweeping across Long Island, New York, made club selection difficult and turned an already challenging course into an even greater examination of patience, skill, and mental toughness.

Only a handful of players managed to finish under par during the early part of the day, highlighting the severity of the conditions. Among those who successfully navigated the demanding layout was Rory McIlroy, who produced a composed opening-round score of one-under-par 69. His performance left him just one stroke behind surprise clubhouse leader Sam Stevens as the afternoon wave of competitors headed onto the course.

Given Shinnecock Hills’ history, McIlroy’s score could prove extremely valuable. Previous editions of the US Open at this venue have produced some of the toughest scoring conditions in major championship history. Across four previous tournaments held at the course, only a small percentage of rounds have finished below par. Even more remarkably, only a few players have managed to complete the entire championship under par after 72 holes.

The course has not been without controversy in the past. During earlier US Open championships, particularly in 2004 and 2018, players criticized course conditions and accused organizers of allowing the playing surfaces to become nearly unplayable. In response, the United States Golf Association (USGA) implemented several adjustments for this year’s event.

Officials have taken extra precautions to maintain the greens, including applying water throughout the opening rounds to prevent the surfaces from drying out excessively. The goal is to create a challenging but fair test while avoiding the problems that generated criticism in previous years.

Despite those efforts, Shinnecock Hills remains one of golf’s sternest examinations. Fairways are bordered by deep rough measuring approximately five inches, while rolling greens and native fescue grass create additional obstacles. Combined with strong winds, every shot requires careful planning and execution.

McIlroy appeared comfortable handling the conditions from the beginning. Starting his round on the back nine, the Northern Irish star quickly found momentum with two birdies in his opening three holes. Although he mixed in a couple of bogeys, he remained calm and continued to play aggressively when opportunities presented themselves.

His confidence was rewarded after the turn when he produced one of the highlights of the day. A massive wind-assisted drive traveled nearly 400 yards on a par-five hole, setting up a brilliant eagle opportunity. McIlroy converted the chance and moved firmly into contention near the top of the leaderboard.

The six-time major champion expressed satisfaction with his opening-round effort, particularly considering his difficult experience at the same venue during the 2018 US Open. On that occasion, he opened with a disappointing score that ultimately led to an early exit from the tournament.

This time, however, he focused on avoiding mistakes and remaining patient throughout the round.

McIlroy noted that scores around par were extremely valuable given the demanding nature of the course. He emphasized that the primary objective was to stay in contention and avoid falling out of the tournament during the opening day.

His playing partners also enjoyed encouraging starts. Swedish star Ludvig Ã…berg matched McIlroy’s score with an impressive 69, while England’s Tommy Fleetwood posted an even-par 70 after producing several important birdies late in his round.

World number one Scottie Scheffler experienced a more difficult opening day. The American, who is attempting to complete the career Grand Slam by adding a US Open title to his collection, struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

Scheffler’s round included moments of brilliance as well as frustration. He recorded four birdies but also mixed in bogeys and a costly double-bogey. Several well-struck iron shots landed on the greens only to spin away from the hole due to the firm conditions, leaving him visibly puzzled.

The demanding nature of Shinnecock Hills was evident throughout the day as players repeatedly found themselves battling unexpected challenges. Defending champion JJ Spaun experienced one of the most unusual moments when a strong gust of wind moved his ball after it had already landed safely on the putting surface, sending it back into a bunker.

Similar incidents occurred across the course as competitors struggled to manage the constantly changing wind conditions.

Former US Open champion Graeme McDowell experienced both highs and lows during his round. After an impressive start that briefly moved him near the top of the leaderboard, mistakes began to accumulate. Several bogeys followed, resulting in a disappointing score that left him well off the pace.

One of the most remarkable performances of the day belonged to American golfer Keith Mitchell. After a difficult front nine that appeared to ruin his chances of a competitive score, Mitchell mounted an extraordinary comeback on the back nine. His turnaround allowed him to finish level par and produce one of the most memorable rounds of the championship’s opening day.

Another significant milestone was achieved by Australian veteran Adam Scott. The former Masters champion made his 100th consecutive appearance in a major championship, joining an exclusive group of players who have demonstrated exceptional longevity and consistency at golf’s highest level.

Meanwhile, former US Open champion Brooks Koepka battled through difficult conditions to post a respectable score, while England’s Tyrrell Hatton also remained within striking distance despite several costly mistakes.

As the championship progresses, weather conditions are expected to remain challenging. Strong winds and firm course conditions will continue to test every aspect of the players’ games. With three rounds still to play, no competitor can feel comfortable, and patience will likely be the key factor in determining who ultimately lifts the trophy.

McIlroy’s strong opening performance has positioned him well, but Shinnecock Hills has a long history of producing dramatic twists and surprises. If the opening round is any indication, this year’s US Open promises to deliver another thrilling battle between the world’s best golfers.
