Alpine have announced the appointment of Mike Elliott as Chief Technical Officer, bringing the former Mercedes technical boss back to Enstone in a newly created role. The team confirmed the move on Thursday, September 17, in the wake of the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid.
Elliott, 52, will “oversee the technical and engineering functions at the team’s factory at Enstone”, with executive technical director David Sanchez reporting to him. “He has a proven track record in the sport, having contributed to an impressive eight Constructors’ and eight Drivers’ Championships,” Alpine said, adding that his arrival “strengthens the team’s technical capabilities as the team looks to build on improved performances” and close the gap to the top four teams.
The British engineer began his Formula 1 career as an aerodynamicist at McLaren in 2000 and worked at Enstone between 2008 and 2012 during the Renault and Lotus era. At Mercedes he rose from head of aerodynamics to technology director in 2017, technical director in 2021 and Chief Technical Officer in 2023, leaving the team later that year after a spell of 23 years in the sport.
Alpine are running Mercedes power units for the first time in 2026 and are currently fighting Racing Bulls for fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship, having made a strong start to the new regulations after writing off much of their 2025 campaign to focus on this year’s car. The team is led by executive advisor Flavio Briatore and managing director Steve Nielsen.
Alpine’s next outing is the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku on September 24-26, with the race run on Saturday, September 26 at 3pm local time (11am GMT).
