Croatia confident of Modric recovery for World Cup
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Croatia’s national team manager Zlatko Dalić has expressed strong confidence that Luka Modrić will recover in time to captain his country at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, despite the veteran midfielder recently undergoing surgery for a serious facial injury. The 40-year-old AC Milan star suffered a fractured cheekbone during a Serie A clash against Juventus, raising initial concerns about his availability for the summer tournament.

The injury occurred during a tense encounter between AC Milan and Juventus that ended in a goalless draw. Modrić was involved in a heavy collision with Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli, with the two players clashing heads during an aerial challenge. The impact left Modrić requiring immediate medical attention, and subsequent examinations revealed the severity of the injury.

AC Milan later confirmed that Modrić had sustained a “complex, multi-fragment fracture” of the left zygomatic bone, which is a critical part of the facial structure. Due to the complicated nature of the fracture, surgery was deemed necessary. Fortunately, the procedure was reported to have been completely successful, offering optimism about his recovery prospects.

Although Milan did not provide a precise timeline for his return to action, the club publicly wished their experienced midfielder a swift and smooth recovery. They also expressed hope that he would regain full fitness in time for the FIFA World Cup, a tournament where Modrić has historically played a pivotal role for Croatia.

The World Cup is scheduled to begin on 11 June, with Croatia set to play their opening match against England on 17 June. With such a tight timeline, the focus now shifts to Modrić’s rehabilitation process and whether he can regain match fitness in time for the competition.

Zlatko Dalić has maintained regular communication with his captain since the incident and has been encouraged by Modrić’s determination and positive attitude. Speaking about the situation, Dalić revealed that he had personally wished Modrić success with his surgery and a speedy recovery. He emphasized his belief that the midfielder will do everything within his power to be ready for the tournament.

Dalić also highlighted Modrić’s professionalism and dedication, noting that the player has consistently demonstrated an exceptional commitment to both club and country throughout his career. As Croatia’s captain, Modrić is not only a key player on the pitch but also a leader who inspires his teammates.

The coach expressed full confidence in the medical team overseeing Modrić’s recovery, stating that the national team will provide all necessary support to ensure he returns in optimal condition. According to Dalić, there is a strong expectation that the recovery process will proceed smoothly, allowing Modrić to once again lead Croatia on the international stage.

Despite the positive outlook, it is widely expected that Modrić will miss the remainder of the Serie A season. AC Milan are currently in a competitive race for a Champions League qualification spot, and his absence could have a significant impact on the team’s performance in the final matches of the campaign.

With four games left to play, Milan sit in third place with 67 points. However, the battle for a top-four finish remains intense, as Juventus are close behind with 64 points, while Como and Roma are also in contention with 61 points each. Losing a player of Modrić’s experience and influence at such a crucial stage presents a challenge for the team.

Modrić’s contributions to AC Milan have been invaluable, both in terms of his technical abilities and his leadership on the field. His vision, passing range, and composure under pressure make him a central figure in the team’s midfield. His absence will require other players to step up and fill the void as Milan push to secure their place in next season’s Champions League.

From an international perspective, Modrić’s potential return is of even greater importance. As one of the most accomplished players in Croatian football history, he has been instrumental in the team’s success over the years. His leadership was crucial during Croatia’s memorable run to the World Cup final in 2018, and he continues to be a driving force in the squad.

At 40 years of age, Modrić’s determination to recover quickly and compete at the highest level once again is a testament to his professionalism and passion for the game. His experience in major tournaments provides Croatia with a significant advantage, particularly in high-pressure situations where composure and decision-making are key.

The coming weeks will be critical as Modrić begins his rehabilitation. The focus will be on ensuring that he not only recovers from the injury but also regains the physical fitness required to perform at an elite level. Given his track record and work ethic, there is a strong belief that he will rise to the challenge.

For Croatia, having their captain available for the World Cup could make a substantial difference to their chances of success. The team will be aiming to build on their past achievements and make another deep run in the tournament, with Modrić playing a central role in their ambitions.

As the World Cup approaches, fans and analysts alike will be closely monitoring Modrić’s progress. While the injury initially raised concerns, the successful surgery and positive outlook from both club and country have provided reassurance.

Ultimately, Modrić’s journey back to fitness will be a story of resilience and determination. If he manages to return in time, it will not only boost Croatia’s prospects but also add another remarkable chapter to the career of one of football’s most respected figures.
