Hamilton fastest but Leclerc expects qualifying to be tight

Ferrari delivered an impressive performance during Friday’s practice sessions at the Monaco Grand Prix, with Lewis Hamilton setting the pace and his teammate Charles Leclerc close behind. Despite Ferrari’s dominance in both sessions, Leclerc has cautioned that qualifying is likely to be extremely competitive, with Red Bull and Mercedes expected to challenge strongly.

The Italian team secured a one-two finish in both practice sessions, highlighting their strong form on the tight and technical Monaco circuit. In the second session, Hamilton edged ahead of Leclerc by just 0.111 seconds to claim the fastest time of the day. Earlier in the first session, the positions were reversed, with Leclerc finishing ahead of Hamilton, indicating how closely matched the two drivers were throughout the day.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen demonstrated consistent pace by finishing third in both sessions, suggesting that he remains a serious contender heading into qualifying. Meanwhile, Mercedes also showed promising speed, with George Russell ending the day in fourth position. Russell was 0.124 seconds quicker than championship leader Kimi Antonelli, underlining Mercedes’ potential to compete at the front.

Leclerc, who was the only Ferrari driver to speak to the media on Friday, emphasized that the competition is tighter than it may appear. He pointed out that Verstappen, in particular, was very close to Ferrari’s pace during the second session, and he expects Red Bull to be highly competitive when it matters most.

In addition to Red Bull, Leclerc believes Mercedes could also pose a significant threat once they optimize their performance in qualifying conditions. He suggested that the gap between the leading teams is minimal, and fans should expect a closely fought battle for pole position.

However, Leclerc also revealed that he has been dealing with ongoing braking issues over the past two race weekends. These problems, which first appeared in Canada, have continued to affect his confidence behind the wheel. Despite showing strong pace, he admitted that the lack of consistency in braking has led to mistakes and prevented him from fully maximizing his performance.

According to Leclerc, the team has yet to identify a complete solution to the issue. He explained that the problem has made it difficult for him to maintain confidence, particularly in high-pressure situations like Monaco, where precision is crucial. As a result, he acknowledged making more errors than usual in recent races.

Red Bull’s head of engineering, Paul Monaghan, also echoed the sentiment that qualifying would be extremely tight. His comments reinforced the expectation that multiple teams could be in contention for pole position, making the session highly unpredictable.

George Russell provided insight into Mercedes’ approach during practice. He explained that the team experimented with different setup configurations across their cars in the first session to gather valuable data. While this may have made their performance appear inconsistent initially, Russell reported feeling much more comfortable in the second session.

Despite the improvements, Russell admitted that Mercedes still appeared to be slightly behind Ferrari in terms of outright pace. Nevertheless, he remained optimistic that the team could close the gap with further adjustments.

Kimi Antonelli, meanwhile, expressed concerns about the handling of his car, particularly in the middle sector of the Monaco circuit. He described the car as unpredictable in that section, which includes challenging corners such as Mirabeau and the harbour-front chicane. These issues could prove critical, given the importance of precision on such a demanding track.

Elsewhere, Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar managed to recover well after a crash in the first practice session. He went on to set the sixth-fastest time, demonstrating resilience and adaptability. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri followed in seventh, although he admitted that his team struggled with a lack of grip throughout the day.

Piastri explained that the issues were not confined to a specific area of the track but were present across all sectors. This made it difficult for McLaren to identify a clear solution, resulting in a challenging day for the team.

His teammate Lando Norris, who won the Monaco Grand Prix last year, experienced even greater difficulties. A technical problem forced him to stop on track early in the session, leaving him down in 19th position. This setback significantly limited his running time and left him with work to do ahead of qualifying.

Further down the order, Audi drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto performed strongly, finishing as the best of the rest behind the top teams. Haas driver Oliver Bearman completed the top 10, showcasing a competitive midfield battle.

The second practice session was relatively calm, with no major incidents despite several drivers coming close to the barriers. However, a late red flag was triggered when Sergio Perez’s Cadillac came to a halt at Casino Square with its front brakes on fire, bringing the session to a temporary stop.

Due to the interruptions and the teams’ focus on preparing for qualifying, there was limited opportunity to assess long-run race pace. This is particularly relevant in Monaco, where overtaking is notoriously difficult, making qualifying performance even more critical.

The first session, however, did feature a notable incident involving Isack Hadjar. He lost control of his car at the entry to the second Swimming Pool chicane, spinning into the barriers. Despite the crash, he was able to recover and continue his participation later in the day.

Fernando Alonso also had a dramatic moment during the first session. The Aston Martin driver narrowly avoided a high-speed crash at the harbour-front chicane. His car became unstable under braking, causing it to slide dangerously towards the barriers. Although the incident damaged his front wing, Alonso managed to keep the car under control and avoid a more serious accident.

Aston Martin struggled overall during the second session, with Alonso finishing 20th and his teammate Lance Stroll at the bottom of the timesheets. Alonso expressed frustration with the car’s performance, citing issues with front grip and persistent understeer.

He also criticized the inconsistency in the car’s behavior during gear changes and braking, which made it difficult to drive confidently. These challenges were particularly problematic in Monaco, where precision and control are essential.

The experienced Spaniard went further, describing the current generation of Formula 1 cars as the worst he has driven at Monaco. He pointed to the hybrid power systems as a source of inconsistency, explaining that variations in energy recovery and deployment can significantly affect engine braking and overall handling.

According to Alonso, these factors create unpredictable conditions for drivers, making it harder to maintain control and confidence. He suggested that the complexity of hybrid systems may not be well-suited to a circuit like Monaco, where consistency is key.

As the weekend progresses, all eyes will be on qualifying, which is expected to play a decisive role in determining the outcome of the race. With Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes all showing competitive pace, the battle for pole position promises to be intense.
