Knicks beat Spurs after record NBA Finals comeback
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

NBA legend Charles Barkley did not hold back in his criticism of the San Antonio Spurs after they suffered one of the most dramatic collapses in basketball history. The Spurs squandered a massive lead, allowing the New York Knicks to complete the biggest comeback ever seen in an NBA Finals game.

San Antonio appeared to be in full control as they built a commanding 29-point lead during the game. Their dominance seemed certain to help them level the best-of-seven series before returning home for Game Five. However, what followed was a stunning turnaround that left fans, analysts, and players in disbelief.

The Knicks, fueled by determination and resilience, slowly chipped away at the deficit. Their remarkable effort culminated in a thrilling 107-106 victory, sealed in dramatic fashion in front of a packed Madison Square Garden crowd. The arena was filled with high-profile celebrities, including global pop star Taylor Swift and Hollywood actor Timothée Chalamet, who witnessed the historic comeback unfold.

The decisive moment came in the closing seconds of the game. London-born forward OG Anunoby secured the win with a crucial tip-in basket with just 1.2 seconds remaining on the clock. His last-second heroics capped off a remarkable comeback and sent the home crowd into a frenzy.

With this victory, the Knicks took a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals series, putting them just one win away from securing their first championship title since 1973. The magnitude of the comeback also etched the game into the record books, surpassing the previous NBA Finals comeback record of 24 points, which was set by the Boston Celtics against the Los Angeles Lakers in 2008.

The Spurs had been dominant early in the game, particularly in the second quarter, where they extended their lead to 29 points. By halftime, they were ahead 76-49, marking the largest halftime lead ever recorded by a visiting team in NBA Finals history. Everything seemed to be going their way, and the Knicks appeared to have little chance of recovery.

However, the second half told a completely different story. San Antonio’s offense faltered dramatically, managing to score only 30 points after the break. Their inability to maintain momentum allowed the Knicks to gradually regain control of the game.

Charles Barkley, speaking as an analyst, harshly criticized the Spurs’ performance. He described their play as some of the most poorly managed basketball he had ever seen. According to Barkley, blowing such a significant lead required not only a strong effort from the opposing team but also major mistakes from the team in control. He emphasized that the Spurs essentially contributed to their own downfall by allowing the Knicks to seize the opportunity.

Despite the loss, Victor Wembanyama delivered a strong individual performance for San Antonio. He led his team with 24 points and also contributed 13 rebounds. However, even his efforts were not enough to prevent the collapse.

After the game, Wembanyama admitted that he struggled to explain what went wrong. He suggested that the team lacked proper execution and perhaps the hunger needed to close out the game. His comments reflected the frustration and confusion felt within the Spurs’ camp after letting such a significant advantage slip away.

The Knicks, on the other hand, demonstrated incredible determination and composure. Heading into the fourth quarter, they were still trailing by 15 points (90-75), but they refused to give up. Their persistence paid off as they continued to reduce the gap possession by possession.

Jalen Brunson played a key role in the comeback. With just 82 seconds remaining, he scored a crucial basket that gave the Knicks their first lead of the game at 105-104. This moment marked a turning point, as it shifted the pressure onto the Spurs.

In the final moments, OG Anunoby made a critical defensive play by blocking an attempt that could have put San Antonio back in front. Shortly afterward, he secured the game-winning tip-in following a missed three-point shot by Brunson. His contribution on both ends of the court proved decisive.

After the game, Brunson highlighted the importance of belief in achieving such an extraordinary comeback. He explained that the team focused on taking the game one possession at a time rather than trying to erase the deficit all at once. This steady and disciplined approach allowed them to stay composed under pressure and ultimately complete the comeback.

The victory not only gave the Knicks a significant advantage in the series but also boosted their confidence as they moved closer to ending a decades-long championship drought. For the Spurs, the loss served as a harsh lesson in maintaining focus and intensity throughout the entire game.

Game Five of the series is set to take place in San Antonio, where the Spurs will have an opportunity to respond and keep their championship hopes alive. However, they will need to address the issues that led to their collapse if they hope to bounce back.

This game will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most dramatic moments in NBA Finals history. It showcased the unpredictable nature of basketball, where no lead is ever truly safe and resilience can turn the tide in the most unexpected ways.

For fans, it was a reminder of why the sport is so captivating. For players and teams, it reinforced the importance of consistency, focus, and mental strength. As the series continues, all eyes will be on whether the Knicks can complete their journey to the title or if the Spurs can recover from this devastating setback.
