NBA explores adding teams in Seattle and Las Vegas

The possibility of the National Basketball Association expanding its footprint has taken a significant step forward, with the league’s board of governors voting to formally explore the addition of two new franchises. Among the leading candidates for expansion are Seattle and Las Vegas, both of which present compelling cases for inclusion in the league’s future.

If the expansion process ultimately receives full approval, it would increase the number of NBA teams from 30 to 32, marking one of the most notable structural changes in the league’s recent history. However, while the vote signals strong interest, several stages of evaluation and approval still remain before any new teams are officially introduced.

Seattle’s long-awaited return

For Seattle, the prospect of regaining an NBA franchise carries deep emotional and historical significance. The city was once home to the Seattle SuperSonics, a team that competed in the league from 1967 until 2008. During that time, the SuperSonics developed a passionate fan base and enjoyed notable success, including winning an NBA championship in 1979.

However, in 2006, the franchise was purchased by an ownership group based in Oklahoma. Just two years later, the team was relocated to Oklahoma City and rebranded as the Oklahoma City Thunder. The move left Seattle without an NBA presence, despite its rich basketball culture and loyal supporters.

Since then, there has been consistent demand for the NBA to return to Seattle. The city’s strong sports infrastructure, large market size, and historical connection to the league make it an attractive candidate. Reports suggest that if a new franchise is established in Seattle, it could revive the SuperSonics name, logo, and legacy, reconnecting the city with its basketball heritage.

Seattle already boasts a vibrant sports scene, hosting teams in three of the four major North American leagues. These include the Seattle Seahawks, the reigning Super Bowl champions in the National Football League, as well as Seattle Mariners in Major League Baseball and Seattle Kraken in the National Hockey League. The addition of an NBA franchise would further strengthen the city’s status as a major sports hub.

Las Vegas emerging as a sports powerhouse

Meanwhile, Las Vegas represents a different kind of opportunity for the NBA. Unlike Seattle, the city has never hosted an NBA team. However, it has rapidly transformed into one of the most dynamic sports markets in North America over the past decade.

The arrival of the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017 marked the city’s entry into the NHL, followed by the relocation of the Las Vegas Raiders from Oakland in 2020. These developments demonstrated Las Vegas’s ability to support major professional franchises.

Looking ahead, the city’s sports landscape will continue to expand. The Oakland Athletics, currently playing in Sacramento, are scheduled to relocate to Las Vegas starting in the 2028 season. This move will further cement the city’s reputation as a growing sports destination.

In addition to these teams, Las Vegas already has a strong connection to basketball. It regularly hosts NBA Summer League games and All-Star events, attracting players, fans, and media from around the world. The city is also home to the Las Vegas Aces, one of the most successful franchises in the Women’s National Basketball Association.

Given this background, Las Vegas is seen as a natural choice for expansion, offering a large and diverse audience, a thriving entertainment industry, and state-of-the-art facilities.

Expansion process and financial implications

Despite the excitement surrounding potential expansion, the process is still in its early stages. Any proposal to add new teams must be approved by at least 23 of the NBA’s 30 governors. This ensures that expansion decisions are made collectively, with careful consideration of financial, competitive, and logistical factors.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver emphasized that the recent vote reflects a willingness to explore opportunities rather than a final decision. He noted that both Seattle and Las Vegas have demonstrated strong support for basketball and represent promising markets for the league’s growth.

Silver also highlighted that the next phase will involve engaging with potential ownership groups and evaluating the feasibility of expansion. This includes assessing market conditions, arena availability, and long-term sustainability.

Financially, the stakes are enormous. Estimates suggest that ownership bids for the new franchises could range between $7 billion (£5.2 billion) and $10 billion (£7.5 billion). These figures underline the immense value of NBA teams and the global appeal of the league.

Impact on league structure

If the expansion is approved and both teams are added, the NBA will need to adjust its conference alignment to maintain competitive balance. Currently, the league is divided into two conferences—the Eastern and Western—each consisting of 15 teams.

With the addition of two new franchises, both likely to be placed in the Western Conference, the league would need to shift one existing team to the Eastern Conference to ensure an even distribution of 16 teams per conference.

Two teams that have been frequently mentioned as candidates for relocation are the Memphis Grizzlies and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Both teams are geographically closer to Eastern Conference markets, making them logical choices for realignment.

A new chapter for the NBA

The potential expansion into Seattle and Las Vegas represents more than just an increase in the number of teams—it signals the NBA’s ongoing evolution and its commitment to growth. By entering new markets and reconnecting with former ones, the league aims to strengthen its global presence and enhance its competitive landscape.

For Seattle, the return of an NBA team would be a moment of celebration and redemption, restoring a cherished part of the city’s identity. For Las Vegas, it would mark another milestone in its transformation into a premier destination for professional sports.

At the same time, the expansion raises important questions about the future of the league. How will new teams impact competition? What challenges will arise in integrating them into the existing structure? And how will the NBA ensure that expansion benefits all stakeholders, including players, fans, and owners?

These questions will be addressed in the coming months and years as the league continues its evaluation process. While there is still much work to be done, the prospect of expansion has already generated significant excitement and anticipation.

Ultimately, the addition of new franchises could usher in a new era for the NBA—one defined by innovation, opportunity, and a broader reach across North America and beyond.
