‘Not appropriate’ for Iran to be at World Cup – Trump
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Tensions surrounding the participation of Iran’s national football team in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup have sparked international discussion following comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump. While stating that Iran’s team is technically welcome to compete in the tournament, Trump expressed concerns that it may not be appropriate for the players to attend due to security risks and concerns for their safety.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with matches scheduled to begin on June 11, 2026. The tournament will mark the first time the competition is hosted by three nations and will also feature an expanded format with more teams participating than in previous editions. As preparations continue for the historic event, geopolitical developments have cast uncertainty over Iran’s involvement.

Trump made his remarks on his social media platform, Truth Social, where he wrote that although the Iranian national soccer team is technically welcome to participate, the situation surrounding the country raises questions about whether it would be safe for them to attend the competition. According to Trump, the safety of players and officials must remain a priority during international sporting events, especially given the rising tensions in the region.

The comments came shortly after Iran’s Minister of Sports and Youth, Ahmad Donyamali, suggested that the country may not be in a position to participate in the World Cup under the current circumstances. In an interview with Iran’s state-run IRIB Sports Network, Donyamali explained that the political and security conditions affecting the nation could make it impossible for the team to compete in the tournament.

Donyamali stated that the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader had created an extremely volatile situation within the country. According to Iranian officials, the attack was carried out by foreign forces during recent military strikes. These strikes were reportedly launched by the United States and Israel and targeted several locations across Iran. The incident dramatically escalated tensions in the Middle East and led to a wave of retaliatory actions.

Following the attack, Iran responded by launching missiles and drones toward Israel as well as several Gulf Arab nations that host U.S. military bases. Countries such as Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates were among those affected by the heightened tensions. The exchange of military actions has significantly increased instability in the region, raising concerns about international travel and participation in global events.

Due to these developments, Iranian officials have begun questioning whether sending their national football team to compete in the World Cup would be feasible or safe. Donyamali emphasized that the well-being of the players must come first, adding that the team could face serious security risks if they were to travel to the United States for the tournament.

“Our players are not safe, and the conditions for participation do not exist,” Donyamali said during the interview. He further argued that the current situation makes it nearly impossible for the team to prepare properly or travel without concerns about potential threats.

Despite these concerns, FIFA has maintained that Iran remains eligible to participate in the tournament. FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently confirmed that Trump had told him Iran would still be allowed to compete if they choose to do so. However, Infantino did not provide further details regarding how FIFA might handle the situation should Iran ultimately decide to withdraw.

Iran is currently scheduled to play several matches during the group stage of the tournament. According to the existing schedule, the team is expected to face New Zealand and Belgium in matches held in Los Angeles on June 15 and June 21 respectively. Their final group-stage match is planned against Egypt in Seattle on June 26.

However, these fixtures could change if Iran officially withdraws from the tournament. FIFA regulations allow the governing body to select a replacement team in cases where a qualified nation is unable to participate. The process for choosing a replacement is typically determined by FIFA’s competition committee and may involve selecting another team from the same regional confederation or based on qualification rankings.

At this stage, FIFA has not confirmed which country might replace Iran should the team withdraw from the competition. The organization is likely monitoring the situation closely as diplomatic and security developments continue to unfold.

The potential absence of Iran from the World Cup would mark a significant change in the tournament lineup. Iran has participated in several recent editions of the World Cup and had qualified for what would have been their fourth consecutive appearance in the global football competition.

For Iranian football fans, the possibility of missing the World Cup would be a major disappointment. The national team has built a strong following over the years and has consistently represented Asia on the international stage. Their participation often draws large audiences and contributes to the tournament’s global diversity.

At the same time, the situation highlights the complex relationship between global sports and international politics. Major sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup are designed to bring nations together through competition and celebration of athletic talent. However, political conflicts and security issues can sometimes overshadow these goals.

As the start of the 2026 World Cup approaches, organizers and international authorities will continue to monitor the situation involving Iran. Whether the team ultimately decides to compete or withdraw remains uncertain, and the decision may depend on how geopolitical tensions evolve in the coming months.

For now, the football world waits to see how the situation unfolds. FIFA, participating nations, and fans across the globe are hoping for a resolution that prioritizes both the safety of athletes and the spirit of international competition.
