Prolific scorers & famous sons – ones to watch in Youth Cup final on BBC
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The FA Youth Cup, a prestigious competition that has been running since 1952, has long been a platform for showcasing the brightest young talents in English football. Over the decades, it has produced countless stars who have gone on to achieve success at the highest level. However, this year’s final between Manchester City and Manchester United has attracted an unusual level of attention, making it one of the most talked-about youth matches in recent history.

This is not the first time these two fierce rivals have met in the FA Youth Cup final. Their previous encounter came in 1986, when Manchester City emerged victorious. Now, decades later, the stage is set for another thrilling Manchester derby, with both clubs eager to claim bragging rights and add another trophy to their youth development history.

Fans will have multiple ways to follow the action. Thanks to an agreement with TNT Sports, the match will be broadcast live on BBC iPlayer, as well as on the BBC Sport website and mobile application. Additionally, live text commentary will be available, ensuring supporters can stay updated even if they cannot watch the game.

Manchester City enter the final with strong momentum, as they are appearing in their third consecutive FA Youth Cup final. Their academy has consistently produced high-quality players, including notable names such as Cole Palmer, Liam Delap, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis, all of whom were part of the squad that won the competition during the 2019-20 season after defeating Chelsea.

On the other hand, Manchester United have an impressive history in the competition, holding the record for the most FA Youth Cup titles with 11 victories. Their most recent triumph came in 2022, when a talented side featuring Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho secured a 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest. That final was played at Old Trafford in front of more than 67,000 fans, highlighting the significant interest these matches can generate.

Despite the excitement surrounding the game, controversy has overshadowed this year’s final due to Manchester City’s decision to host it at the Joie Stadium. This venue, located within the club’s training complex, has a capacity of around 7,000 spectators, significantly smaller than the Etihad Stadium, where City previously hosted a Youth Cup match in front of 20,000 fans.

City have explained that ongoing construction work at the Etihad Stadium made it unavailable for the final. However, this reasoning has not satisfied everyone. Manchester United expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision and suggested that the match should be moved to a larger, more suitable venue, such as Old Trafford. The Football Association also reportedly preferred the final to be held in a main stadium to accommodate a larger audience.

Despite these objections, Manchester City, as the designated home team, chose to proceed with hosting the match at Joie Stadium. The limited ticket allocation for Manchester United fans sold out almost instantly, demonstrating the high demand for the match. Meanwhile, tickets for the home sections remain available to City supporters.

As the match approaches, attention has turned to the players who could make the difference on the pitch. Manchester City’s journey to the final has been particularly impressive, with the team scoring 18 goals across their matches against Fulham, Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, and Blackburn. Their attacking prowess has made them one of the most exciting teams in the competition.

One of the standout performers for City is Teddie Lamb, a prolific striker who has scored 28 goals in just 27 appearances this season. The 16-year-old has quickly established himself as one of the most promising young forwards in English football. Having joined City from Leyton Orient for a reported fee of £355,000, Lamb has exceeded expectations and was among the top scorers in the Premier League Under-18 competition.

City’s academy also features several players with strong footballing pedigrees. Reigan Heskey, the son of former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey, has made notable contributions, while Tyrone and Floyd Samba, sons of former defender Chris Samba, have combined for 18 goals this season.

Defensively, Leke Drake has been a key figure for City. The 18-year-old captain has played every match this season and was named the Premier League Under-18 Scholar of the Year. Known for his composure on the ball and versatility, Drake has been instrumental in leading his team to the Under-18 North title.

Midfielder Harrison Miles is another player to watch. Although he has scored only twice this season, one of his goals came in a memorable comeback victory against Manchester United earlier in the campaign. His long-range strike helped City overturn a 2-0 deficit to win 4-2, highlighting his ability to deliver in crucial moments.

Manchester United’s path to the final has been more challenging, with several closely contested matches along the way. They secured narrow victories against Peterborough, Derby County, and Sunderland, with the latter two matches requiring extra time. A convincing win against Oxford set up a semi-final clash with Crystal Palace, where they once again needed extra time to advance, thanks to a decisive goal from Chido Obi.

Obi is one of United’s most important players and is expected to lead the attack in the final. The Denmark youth international has already gained experience with the first team, making eight appearances last season. His physical presence, pace, and goal-scoring ability make him a constant threat to opposing defenses.

Another standout talent in United’s squad is JJ Gabriel, widely regarded as one of the most exciting young players in England. At just 15 years old, he has already made a significant impact, earning the Premier League Under-18 Player of the Year award. Operating as an attacking midfielder, Gabriel is known for his exceptional dribbling, balance, and creativity.

Jim Thwaites adds further quality to United’s midfield. Previously deployed in more advanced roles, he has been used in deeper positions this season, showcasing his versatility. His excellent passing range, energy, and ability to score from set-pieces make him a valuable asset.

Defensively, captain Dan Armer provides leadership and stability at the back, while players like Junior Brown and Noah Ajayi offer attacking threats from wide areas. Goalkeeper Cameron Byrne-Hughes has also enjoyed a solid campaign, delivering consistent performances between the posts.

For both teams, the final represents more than just a chance to win silverware. It is an opportunity for young players to showcase their talent on a big stage and potentially earn recognition from senior team managers.

Manchester United midfielder Rafe McCormack acknowledged the significance of the occasion, particularly given the rivalry between the two clubs. However, he emphasized the importance of staying focused and not being distracted by external factors, including the venue controversy.

As anticipation builds, the FA Youth Cup final promises to deliver an exciting contest between two of England’s most successful academies. Regardless of the outcome, the match will serve as a celebration of young talent and the future of football.
