Saka trains alone as England prepare for Ghana game

England continued their preparations for their upcoming World Cup group-stage clash against Ghana with a near full-strength training session, although one notable absence caught attention. Bukayo Saka was the only player missing from group training, as the Arsenal winger followed a personalized indoor recovery program to manage an ongoing Achilles concern.

The 24-year-old forward has been carefully handling this issue since March, with England’s coaching and medical staff taking a cautious approach to ensure he remains fit for the crucial stages of the tournament. While the rest of the squad trained on the pitch, Saka stayed indoors, focusing on tailored exercises designed to reduce strain on his Achilles and maintain his overall condition.

England are set to face Ghana in Boston on Tuesday evening, with both teams entering the fixture full of confidence after winning their respective opening matches in Group L. The encounter is expected to be a competitive test for both sides, as they aim to secure early qualification for the knockout rounds.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel oversaw the training session at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, where 25 of his 26-man squad participated. The training atmosphere was lively and somewhat unique, as players from Major League Baseball teams—the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals—were present and observing proceedings. The two baseball teams had faced each other the previous night, adding an unusual crossover of sporting interest to England’s preparations.

Saka’s absence from group drills, however, was not entirely unexpected. During England’s opening match against Croatia—a 4-2 victory—he was introduced as a substitute and made an immediate impact by assisting Marcus Rashford’s goal. His cameo demonstrated his attacking quality and importance to the squad, even while not fully match-fit.

Prior to the tournament, Tuchel had already indicated that Saka would require careful management during the early stages of the competition. The winger is understood to be dealing with Achilles tendinitis, a condition that can worsen if overused without proper recovery. As a result, England’s coaching team is prioritizing long-term fitness over short-term availability.

Despite the ongoing issue, Saka himself has shown a strong desire to contribute. He has publicly stated that he feels ready to play and is willing to take risks with his fitness if it means helping the team succeed on the world stage. His determination reflects both his competitive mindset and his importance within the squad.

However, Tuchel has taken a more measured stance. The German manager has emphasized that while Saka is progressing well, he is unlikely to start matches in the early part of the group stage. Instead, the plan is to gradually increase his involvement, ensuring he reaches peak condition when it matters most.

According to Tuchel, Saka is expected to be fully ready by England’s final group-stage match against Panama, scheduled to take place in New Jersey. By that stage, the coaching staff hope he will be able to start and play a significant role, particularly if England are pushing for a strong finish in the group.

“Bukayo is ready and will get more and more ready,” Tuchel explained. “I think once we reach the last game of the group, he will be fully prepared.” His comments underline a strategy focused on patience and long-term planning rather than immediate risk.

Saka’s situation is not new. He has been managing this Achilles issue for several months, including during Arsenal’s recent campaign. Despite concerns behind the scenes, the club determined that he was fit enough to continue playing regularly, and he played a key role in their successful title run.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is known for being highly protective when it comes to player injuries, often keeping such details private. Throughout the season, information about Saka’s condition was closely guarded, with little disclosed publicly.

However, Tuchel’s openness regarding Saka’s fitness has brought increased attention to the winger’s condition. By acknowledging the need for careful management, the England manager has highlighted both the player’s importance and the risks associated with rushing him back too quickly.

The decision to limit Saka’s workload in training and matches reflects a broader understanding of tournament football. With multiple games in a short period, maintaining squad fitness is essential. Players carrying minor injuries must be handled strategically to avoid more serious setbacks.

Tuchel’s approach suggests he views Saka as a crucial asset for the latter stages of the competition, when matches become more intense and decisive. By preserving his fitness now, England aim to have him available at full strength when the stakes are highest.

At the same time, Tuchel has not ruled out the possibility of Saka featuring against Ghana if circumstances demand it. While a starting role appears unlikely, his ability to influence games from the bench—demonstrated against Croatia—makes him a valuable option.

England’s depth in attacking positions provides some flexibility, allowing Tuchel to rotate players without significantly weakening the team. This depth enables the manager to take a cautious approach with Saka while still maintaining strong performances on the pitch.

As the team prepares for their next challenge, the focus remains on building momentum and securing another positive result. A victory against Ghana would place England in a strong position to advance from the group, reducing pressure ahead of the final match.

For Saka, the priority is clear: recovery, consistency, and readiness for when he is needed most. His talent and versatility make him a key figure in England’s ambitions, and careful management could prove decisive in determining the team’s success.

Ultimately, England’s handling of Saka reflects a balance between ambition and responsibility. While the desire to win every match is strong, the long-term objective of competing for the World Cup requires thoughtful planning and disciplined decision-making.
