‘Tears in my eyes’ – Jesus enjoys ‘dream night’ in San Siro

Gabriel Jesus admitted he was overcome with emotion after producing a match-winning performance to guide Arsenal to a crucial 3-1 victory away at Inter Milan, a result that secured the Gunners’ place in the Champions League last 16. The Brazilian forward scored twice at San Siro, marking a powerful moment in his long and difficult road back from injury.

For Jesus, the night represented far more than just three points or qualification. It was the culmination of months of frustration, rehabilitation, and self-reflection after spending almost a year sidelined with a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury. Making only his third start since returning to action in December, the 28-year-old looked sharp, confident, and decisive—everything Arsenal supporters had hoped to see.

Speaking after the match, Jesus described the experience as “a dream night,” revealing that he had tears in his eyes after scoring in one of Europe’s most iconic stadiums. As a child growing up in Brazil, he followed Serie A closely, watching legends perform in Italy. To now score twice against Inter Milan on their home turf was a deeply personal achievement.

Jesus has been an Arsenal player for four seasons, yet injuries have repeatedly disrupted his momentum. He admitted that despite his time at the club, it feels like he has only played “one and a half or two seasons” because of the constant setbacks. The long spell out injured forced him to grow mentally as well as physically, learning patience and resilience during the toughest period of his career.

Against Inter, those lessons were evident. From the opening whistle, Jesus led the line with intelligence and intensity, pressing defenders, linking play, and taking his chances clinically. His first goal gave Arsenal control, while his second sealed a famous away win and extended the club’s perfect record in this season’s Champions League.

Arsenal’s performance was measured and mature. Having lost at the same venue last season, Mikel Arteta’s side arrived determined to correct past mistakes. They dominated possession, pressed Inter high up the pitch, and limited the Italian champions’ attacking threat for long periods.

Jesus acknowledged that Inter remain one of Europe’s strongest sides, particularly dangerous in attack. However, he felt Arsenal managed the game exceptionally well, controlling the tempo and capitalising on key moments. Even when Inter pushed forward, the Gunners remained composed and disciplined.

The victory marked Arsenal’s seventh consecutive win in the Champions League—an unprecedented run in the club’s history. Qualification with games to spare underlines the progress Arteta has overseen and strengthens belief that Arsenal can be serious contenders in the latter stages of the competition.

For Jesus personally, the two goals ended a frustrating drought in Europe. He had gone 10 Champions League matches without finding the net, with his previous goal coming in a dominant win over Lens in November 2023. Breaking that run in such a high-profile match made the moment even sweeter.

The Brazilian’s resurgence also adds a new dynamic to Arsenal’s attacking options. Since his return to fitness, fans have been vocal in their desire to see him start regularly. Summer signing Viktor Gyokeres has struggled for consistency, and while the Swedish striker scored a superb curling effort late on in Milan, his overall form has been under scrutiny.

Gyokeres’ goal was only his second from open play in 13 matches, although recent signs suggest improvement. He has now scored twice in his last three appearances, including a vital strike in Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg win against Chelsea. Competition for places is heating up at the Emirates, with Kai Havertz also returning from a knee injury to offer another attacking alternative.

Jesus welcomed that competition, stressing his professionalism and respect for teammates. At 28, he understands the realities of modern football and the demands placed on elite squads. Rather than focusing on individual status, he emphasised the importance of collective success and mutual support.

He expressed genuine happiness at seeing Gyokeres score in Milan, highlighting the positive atmosphere within the squad. Jesus believes that goals will come for everyone if the team continues to play with confidence and unity.

The emotional weight of the evening was unmistakable. Jesus spoke openly about how his long injury layoff changed his outlook on life and football. He described learning to find meaning in both success and adversity, accepting that challenges often shape a player more than triumphs.

That mindset has clearly benefited Arsenal. With Jesus rediscovering his sharpness, Arteta gains a forward capable of pressing relentlessly, creating chances, and delivering in big moments. His experience, leadership, and versatility could prove vital as Arsenal navigate a demanding schedule across domestic and European competitions.

Attention now turns quickly to the Premier League, with another important fixture looming at the weekend. Jesus made it clear that there is no time for complacency. Qualification may be secured, but momentum must be maintained if Arsenal are to challenge on all fronts.

As the Gunners continue to grow in stature on the European stage, performances like this serve as a reminder of their potential. For Gabriel Jesus, the night at San Siro was not just about goals—it was about redemption, resilience, and the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.
