The tactics that could win Arsenal the Champions League

Arsenal, under the leadership of Mikel Arteta, are aiming to crown their remarkable domestic success with European glory as they prepare to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final. The highly anticipated clash is scheduled for Saturday, and although Arsenal enter the match with confidence, they are fully aware of the immense challenge posed by their French opponents.

Arsenal’s journey through the tournament has been built on a solid defensive foundation. Their style of play emphasizes ball control and disciplined positioning, allowing them to dominate possession while limiting their opponents’ chances. This approach has resulted in an impressive nine clean sheets, the highest tally in the competition so far. Their defensive resilience has been a cornerstone of their European campaign.

In contrast, PSG have adopted a more attacking philosophy under the guidance of Luis Enrique. While they have managed only five clean sheets, they have been the most prolific attacking side in the tournament, scoring an astonishing 44 goals compared to Arsenal’s 29. This sets up a fascinating tactical battle between Arsenal’s defensive strength and PSG’s attacking firepower.

Arteta will likely encourage his team to take an aggressive approach, pushing forward and maintaining pressure in PSG’s half. This strategy proved effective in spells during last season’s semi-final encounter between the two sides, even though Arsenal ultimately fell short. Replicating that intensity and control could be key to breaking down PSG’s defense.

One of the most intriguing tactical options available to Arsenal is the use of Mikel Merino in an unconventional role. In previous encounters, Merino operated as a false nine, dropping deep into midfield rather than staying in a traditional striker position. This movement created confusion for PSG’s defenders, particularly Willian Pacho, who was hesitant to follow him out of position.

By vacating the forward line and moving into midfield, Merino effectively gave Arsenal a numerical advantage in that area. PSG’s midfielders were forced to adjust, often leaving other Arsenal players unmarked. This allowed the Gunners to progress the ball more easily and create opportunities to advance up the pitch.

Another tactical weapon Arsenal could utilize is the long ball. Against PSG’s high pressing system, which often involves man-to-man marking, playing direct passes over the press can be highly effective. Players like Merino and Kai Havertz are well-suited to this approach, as they can win aerial duels and bring the ball under control for supporting midfielders.

Additionally, Viktor Gyokeres could play a role by stretching PSG’s defense with runs into wide areas. His physical presence and ability to challenge defenders could create space for teammates and disrupt PSG’s defensive structure.

Despite their strengths, Arsenal faced difficulties scoring against PSG in previous meetings, largely due to the exceptional performances of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. However, other teams such as Chelsea, RC Lens, and Bayern Munich have demonstrated that PSG’s defense can be breached.

A common strategy employed by these teams involves positioning players close together in central areas. This draws PSG’s players into tight clusters, leaving space elsewhere on the pitch. By quickly moving the ball out of these congested areas, teams have been able to exploit gaps and create scoring opportunities.

Arsenal, however, have traditionally been cautious about playing through the center, preferring to attack from wider areas. This is partly due to the risk of losing possession in dangerous positions, which could lead to counter-attacks. Nevertheless, with technically skilled players like Leandro Trossard, Bukayo Saka, Martin Zubimendi, and Eberechi Eze, Arsenal have the ability to operate effectively in tight spaces.

Defensively, Arsenal will need to be particularly vigilant against PSG’s dynamic and fluid attacking system. One of the key threats is Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, whose creativity and unpredictability make him a constant danger on the left flank.

PSG’s tactical approach involves maintaining structure while allowing players to rotate between positions. They aim to occupy key areas of the pitch, including both wings, the central attacking zone, and defensive positions, regardless of which players fill those roles. This fluidity can make it difficult for opponents to maintain their defensive shape.

Kvaratskhelia’s movement off the ball is particularly noteworthy. His ability to feint and change direction can destabilize defenders, creating space for himself and his teammates. Arsenal will need to decide whether to press aggressively or maintain a deeper defensive line to counter these movements.

Arteta has previously adjusted his tactics effectively against PSG. In a past encounter, he modified Arsenal’s pressing strategy, with Martin Odegaard playing a more advanced role to disrupt PSG’s buildup. Additionally, William Saliba adopted a man-marking approach against Ousmane Dembele, limiting his influence on the game.

Set-pieces could also play a निर्णायक role in the final. PSG have shown vulnerability in defending dead-ball situations, conceding several goals from corners and free-kicks. Their relatively smaller squad size can make it challenging to defend aerial threats.

Teams like Tottenham have exploited this weakness by targeting the back post and redirecting the ball across goal. Arsenal, who are particularly strong in set-piece situations, could use similar tactics to create scoring opportunities.

Ultimately, while PSG possess incredible attacking talent and tactical flexibility, there are clear areas where Arsenal can exploit weaknesses. If the Gunners can combine their defensive solidity with effective attacking strategies, they stand a strong chance of securing victory.

The Champions League final promises to be an exciting contest between two contrasting styles, with Arsenal aiming to complete a historic double and PSG seeking to assert their dominance on the European stage.
