Uruguay pick Man Utd’s Ugarte but Suarez left out

Uruguay have officially announced their squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, and while several familiar names have made the cut, the absence of veteran striker Luis Suarez has emerged as one of the biggest talking points. Head coach Marcelo Bielsa has opted for a fresh approach, focusing on a blend of experienced players and emerging talent as the South American side prepares for the global tournament in North America.

Among those selected is Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who continues to establish himself as a key figure in Uruguay’s midfield. Ugarte is joined by fellow Premier League players Santiago Bueno of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Rodrigo Bentancur of Tottenham Hotspur, highlighting the influence of England’s top flight on the national team.

Despite his vast experience and legendary status, Luis Suarez has been left out of the 26-man squad. The 39-year-old forward, who has enjoyed an illustrious career with clubs such as Liverpool and Barcelona, had recently hinted at the possibility of making a return to international football. After stepping away from the national team nearly two years ago, Suarez indicated that he would be willing to reverse his retirement if the team required his services. However, Bielsa has decided to move forward without him, signaling a shift towards a new generation of players.

Another notable inclusion is Darwin Nunez, the former Liverpool striker who currently plays for Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal. Nunez’s selection comes despite a challenging period at club level, where he has struggled for consistent playing time. Since February, he has not featured in the Saudi Pro League due to complications surrounding foreign-player registration rules following the arrival of Karim Benzema. Nevertheless, Bielsa has shown faith in Nunez’s abilities, recognizing his potential to make an impact on the international stage.

Uruguay have been drawn into Group H, where they will face Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde, and Spain in the group stage. Their campaign begins on 15 June with a match against Saudi Arabia, followed by encounters with Cape Verde and European giants Spain. The group presents a mix of challenges, requiring Uruguay to be at their best if they are to progress to the knockout stages.

The squad itself reflects Bielsa’s tactical philosophy and emphasis on versatility. In goal, Uruguay have selected Sergio Rochet, Fernando Muslera, and Santiago Mele. Muslera, in particular, brings a wealth of experience, having represented the national team in multiple major tournaments over the years.

Defensively, the team boasts a strong lineup featuring players from top clubs around the world. Ronald Araujo of Barcelona and Jose Maria Gimenez of Atletico Madrid are expected to form the backbone of the defense, providing both strength and leadership. They are supported by Santiago Bueno, Sebastian Caceres, Mathias Olivera, Joaquin Piquerez, Matias Vina, and Guillermo Varela, offering depth and flexibility across the backline.

In midfield, Uruguay possess a wealth of talent capable of controlling games and creating opportunities. Federico Valverde of Real Madrid stands out as one of the team’s most influential players, known for his energy, vision, and ability to contribute both defensively and offensively. Alongside him, Manuel Ugarte provides stability and ball-winning capabilities, while Rodrigo Bentancur adds composure and technical quality.

Other midfield options include Giorgian de Arrascaeta, Nicolas de la Cruz, Emiliano Martinez, and Agustin Canobbio, all of whom bring creativity and attacking threat. Younger players such as Facundo Pellistri and Maximiliano Araujo offer pace and dynamism, giving Bielsa additional tactical options.

In the attacking department, Uruguay will rely heavily on Darwin Nunez to lead the line. Despite his recent lack of playing time, his physical presence and goal-scoring ability make him a key asset. He is supported by Rodrigo Aguirre and Federico Vinas, who provide alternative attacking options.

The decision to exclude Suarez marks the end of an era for Uruguayan football. Over the years, Suarez has been one of the country’s most iconic players, contributing significantly to their success on the international stage. His goals, leadership, and experience have made him a central figure in the team for more than a decade.

However, Bielsa’s decision suggests a focus on the future, prioritizing players who can adapt to his high-intensity style of play. Known for his demanding tactical approach, Bielsa requires players who can maintain a high work rate and execute his strategies effectively. This may have influenced his decision to leave out older players in favor of younger, more dynamic options.

The inclusion of several players from top European leagues indicates Uruguay’s ambition to compete at the highest level. With a balanced squad that combines experience and youth, the team has the potential to make a strong impression at the tournament.

Uruguay’s journey in the World Cup will depend on their ability to gel as a unit and execute Bielsa’s game plan. The group stage presents a variety of challenges, from the disciplined approach of Saudi Arabia to the unpredictability of Cape Verde and the technical brilliance of Spain.

As the tournament approaches, all eyes will be on how Uruguay perform without Suarez and whether the new generation can step up to fill the void left by one of the nation’s greatest players. The selection of players like Ugarte, Bentancur, and Valverde suggests that the team is entering a new phase, with a focus on building for both the present and the future.

Ultimately, Uruguay’s squad selection reflects a bold decision by Bielsa to reshape the team and embrace change. While the absence of Suarez may be surprising, it also signals an opportunity for new stars to emerge and carry the team forward on football’s biggest stage. https://netsports247.com/
