2026 Winter Olympics; IOC approve three candidates

IOC (International Olympic Committee) has finally approved three candidates for hosting the 2023 Winter Olympics.

IOC announced on Tuesday that Calgary, Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo and Stockholm are the three potential candidates for hosting the 2023 Winter Olympics.

The upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing, China and as for 2018’s Winter Olympics, it will be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

The final host for the 2023 Winter Olympics will be finalized on the 2019 June at the 134th IOC Session. The venue of this session has been moved from Milan to Lausanne, Switzerland.

IOC during their 133rd session held at Buenos Aires revealed that a refugee Olympic team is also going to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Earlier in the 2016’s Olympic team, ten athletes from countries like Ethiopia, South Sudan, Syria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo were part of an inaugural refugee Olympic team.

Thomas Bach; the IOC president announced on Tuesday that, “In an ideal world we would have a refugee team at the Olympics. However unfortunately due to the reason by which we created the first ever refugee team continues to persist.”

He further added to his statement, “This will be the continuation of an exciting human and Olympic journey. It will also serve as a reminder for the refugees that they are not forgotten by us”.
