Chelsea in talks for Rennes defender Jacquet

Chelsea have begun discussions over a potential January move for Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet as they look to strengthen their defensive options during the winter transfer window. The Premier League club has already opened dialogue with both Rennes and the 20-year-old defender’s representatives, signaling clear intent to explore a deal, although the financial demands involved could prove a significant obstacle.

According to sources close to the negotiations, Chelsea have been quoted a fee in excess of £60 million to complete a transfer for Jacquet this month. While no agreement is currently in place, the early talks underline how highly the Blues rate the young French defender. Jacquet, who is a France Under-21 international, is understood to be keen on the move to Stamford Bridge, viewing it as a major step forward in his career. However, Chelsea are not alone in their interest, with several other top clubs monitoring his situation closely.

Chelsea’s renewed push for a centre-back comes after an internal decision to accelerate their defensive recruitment plans. Initially, the club had intended to wait until the summer transfer window to address the position, but circumstances have prompted them to act six months earlier than planned. This shift reflects both immediate squad needs and longer-term strategic planning, as Chelsea aim to build a defence capable of competing consistently at the highest level.

Jacquet has emerged as a standout performer at Rennes, impressing with his composure on the ball, positional awareness, and maturity despite his young age. His ability to play out from the back fits the profile Chelsea are targeting, particularly as the club continues to prioritize defenders who are comfortable in possession and capable of contributing to build-up play. These qualities have made him one of the most sought-after young centre-backs in Europe.

Despite their interest in Jacquet, Chelsea are also keeping alternative options firmly on the table. One such name under consideration is Como defender Jacabo Ramon, who has attracted attention not only from Chelsea but also from Real Madrid. Ramon’s growing reputation has placed him firmly on the radar of several elite clubs, which could complicate any potential move.

Another player being monitored is Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi. The Argentine defender’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, making him an attractive target for clubs looking for value in the market. Juventus are also reportedly interested in Senesi, adding further competition. At this stage, Bournemouth have not received any formal approach from Chelsea, but the situation could develop as the window progresses.

Chelsea’s current transfer activity cannot be viewed in isolation from events over the past year. The club had already explored signing a centre-back during the previous summer transfer window when former head coach Enzo Maresca was in charge. At that time, Chelsea identified Dean Huijsen as a key target, but the highly rated defender chose to join Real Madrid instead. That decision forced Chelsea back to the drawing board.

Although other defensive options were considered last summer, Chelsea ultimately concluded that none met their requirements in terms of quality, profile, and long-term value. This hesitation contributed to mounting frustration within the coaching staff, particularly for Maresca, who was eager to reinforce his defensive line. Those early transfer frustrations were among the factors that eventually played a role in his mid-season departure from the club.

The urgency to secure a new centre-back was heightened by injury concerns. Levi Colwill suffered a serious knee injury during pre-season, significantly impacting Chelsea’s defensive depth and forcing the club to rely on limited alternatives. While Colwill’s recovery has progressed positively and there is optimism that he could return later in the campaign, Chelsea remain cautious. The club continues to view Colwill as a cornerstone of their long-term plans, but they are aware of the need to manage his return carefully.

Looking further ahead, Chelsea are also considering the contractual situations of other defenders within the squad. There is growing expectation that both Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo will reach decisive moments in their Chelsea careers during the summer. By that point, each will have two years remaining on their contracts, a timeframe that typically forces clubs to choose between offering new deals or exploring potential sales to avoid losing players at reduced value.

These looming decisions have added another layer of urgency to Chelsea’s defensive planning. Securing a younger centre-back now could provide stability and flexibility, allowing the club to manage contract negotiations and squad turnover more effectively in the coming months.

While no deal for Jacquet is imminent, Chelsea’s willingness to engage in talks during the January window highlights their determination to address defensive weaknesses sooner rather than later. Whether they ultimately meet Rennes’ valuation or turn to alternative targets remains to be seen, but it is clear that strengthening the heart of the defence is a top priority.

As the winter transfer window continues, Chelsea are expected to assess their options carefully, balancing immediate needs against long-term objectives. With strong competition for many of their targets, negotiations are likely to be complex, and patience may be required before any agreement is reached.
