Kim leads Scheffler and teenager Brown by one shot

The third round of the American Express PGA Tour event in California produced an enthralling leaderboard shake-up, as South Korea’s Si-Woo Kim surged into a one-shot lead heading into the final day. Kim, who is aiming to capture his second title at this tournament, delivered a superb third-round performance, carding a six-under-par 66. His round included seven birdies offset by a solitary bogey, which proved enough to propel him to 22 under overall, narrowly edging out world number one Scottie Scheffler of the United States and teenage sensation Blades Brown.

Kim’s measured and calm approach on the course stood out to spectators and analysts alike. “I’m just not thinking about trying to win or trying to finish, just enjoy the round,” Kim said after completing his third round. “That’s my goal.” The statement underscored the composure that has allowed the South Korean golfer to maintain consistency and poise under pressure. His performance on the La Quinta Country Club course demonstrated both strategic precision and excellent shot-making, particularly in key moments where he navigated hazards and maximized scoring opportunities.

American star Scottie Scheffler, making his first PGA Tour appearance of the season, remained firmly in contention with a third-round 68, putting him just a single shot behind Kim. Scheffler’s round was highlighted by six birdies and two bogeys, reflecting his aggressive yet calculated approach to navigating the challenges of the Pete Dye Stadium Course, where he played on the same day. Despite the wind and course complexities, Scheffler maintained his characteristic poise and focus, leaving him well-positioned for the final round. “I think I did pretty good,” Scheffler said. “There are definitely challenging aspects to playing in the wind out here. I just have to be a little sharper tomorrow.”

Equally impressive was 18-year-old Blades Brown, who carded a 68, tying Scheffler in second place and positioning himself for a potential historic win. Had he succeeded, Brown would become the second youngest PGA Tour event winner in history, a remarkable feat for someone at the very start of their professional career. The young American’s round included five birdies and a single bogey, demonstrating both skill and composure well beyond his years. Brown’s performance under the intense pressure of a large gallery and challenging course conditions has drawn significant attention, marking him as one of the game’s rising stars.

Brown’s third-round performance was particularly exciting in its closing stretch. Three of his five birdies came in the final three holes, including a dramatic 44-foot putt on the 18th hole, showcasing his nerves of steel and precision under pressure. “That to me is a lot of fun. I love environments like that, especially 17,” said Brown. “There are so many people around, it gets your adrenaline up. And that’s what you play and practice for, right?” The teenager’s energy and fearless play in front of large crowds reflected a maturity beyond his years and a clear understanding of the stakes involved in PGA Tour competition. He added, “Another 18 holes and we’re going to see what we can do,” emphasizing his focus on the task ahead rather than the pressure of potential history-making.

The American Express event is unique in that players rotate across three different courses over the first three rounds, adding an additional layer of complexity to scoring and preparation. Kim’s third-round performance took place on the La Quinta Country Club course, while Scheffler and Brown played on the Pete Dye Stadium Course. The rotation demands adaptability, precise course management, and consistent mental focus, which makes Kim’s birdie-laden round even more impressive. The multi-course format adds an element of strategic challenge and tests every aspect of a player’s skill set—from long-iron accuracy and driving distance to short-game finesse and putting under pressure.

The leaderboard at the end of round three read: Kim on 22 under, with Scheffler and Brown at 21 under, followed by Wyndham Clark and Erik Cole at 20 under, and T.J. Hoge, Matt McCarty, and Andrew Putnam tied at 19 under. Other notable performances included major names such as Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, and Matt Fitzpatrick, who remained in contention but several strokes behind the leaders. The tight margins reflect the competitive depth of the PGA Tour, where even small mistakes or brilliant shots can swing momentum and dramatically alter leaderboard positions.

Kim’s birdie-filled round reflected a mix of aggressive play and careful course management, allowing him to maintain a slight edge over his closest competitors. For Scheffler, the challenge is to convert his strong position into a tournament victory, maintaining focus and avoiding the pitfalls of over-aggression in the wind. Similarly, Brown’s remarkable composure at just 18 years old positions him as a dark horse capable of challenging for the title, bringing a sense of excitement and unpredictability to the final round.

The potential outcome of the American Express has significant implications for both emerging talent and established stars. For Scheffler, capturing this title would mark a strong start to his season and add to his already impressive PGA Tour win tally, solidifying his reputation among the sport’s elite. For Kim, winning a second title at the same tournament would further cement his status as a consistent contender and demonstrate his ability to perform under pressure on a course rotation that challenges even the most seasoned professionals. For Brown, a historic victory would make him one of the youngest champions in modern PGA Tour history and a name to watch for years to come.

The third round also highlighted the importance of strategy, mental focus, and resilience in professional golf. Each player had to account for varying course layouts, wind conditions, and spectator pressures while executing precise shot selection. Kim, Scheffler, and Brown each demonstrated their ability to manage these variables effectively, keeping themselves in contention and showcasing the depth of talent in the current PGA Tour era. Fans were treated to moments of brilliance, particularly on crucial holes where birdies and near-misses kept the leaderboard dynamic and unpredictable.

Looking ahead to the final round, all eyes will be on Kim, Scheffler, and Brown as they vie for the title. The competition promises a thrilling conclusion, with potential for dramatic swings and historical achievements. As the players approach the last 18 holes, focus, composure, and execution will be paramount, with each stroke carrying significant weight in determining the champion. Analysts and commentators are eagerly anticipating a high-stakes showdown that could see an established star, a rising talent, or a young phenom emerge victorious.
