Knicks stun Cavaliers with 22-point comeback
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The New York Knicks produced a stunning and historic comeback to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers 115-104 in Game 1 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals, delivering one of the most dramatic moments in recent playoff history. Trailing by a massive 22 points late in the fourth quarter, the Knicks refused to give up, mounting an extraordinary rally that left fans at Madison Square Garden in disbelief.

With less than eight minutes remaining in regulation, the Cavaliers appeared to have complete control of the game. They held a commanding 93-71 lead and looked poised to secure a comfortable victory on the road. However, what followed was an unforgettable turnaround driven by resilience, determination, and clutch performances from key players.

The Knicks went on a remarkable scoring run, outpacing the Cavaliers 30-8 over the closing stretch of the fourth quarter. This surge allowed them to erase the deficit entirely and level the score at 101-101, forcing the game into overtime. The momentum had completely shifted by that point, and the Cavaliers struggled to recover from the sudden collapse.

In overtime, the Knicks carried their energy forward, dominating the extra period to secure an 11-point victory. The comeback now ranks as the second-largest fourth-quarter turnaround in NBA playoff history and the biggest since April 2012, when the Los Angeles Clippers overcame a 24-point deficit against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Knicks head coach Mike Brown expressed his amazement at the team’s performance, admitting he had rarely witnessed such a dramatic comeback in a playoff setting. He praised his players for their belief and fighting spirit, highlighting their ability to stay composed and execute under immense pressure.

Leading the charge was Jalen Brunson, who delivered a sensational performance when it mattered most. The Knicks guard scored 38 points in total, with 17 of those coming during the final minutes of regulation and overtime. His leadership and scoring ability were crucial in turning the game around and inspiring his teammates.

Mikal Bridges also made a significant contribution, adding 18 points, while Karl-Anthony Towns recorded a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Together, they provided the support needed to complement Brunson’s heroics and ensure the Knicks capitalized on their momentum.

Miles McBride echoed the team’s collective mindset after the game, emphasizing their resilience and adaptability. According to him, the Knicks have a roster full of players capable of stepping up on any given night, making them a dangerous opponent regardless of the situation.

On the other side, the Cavaliers were left to reflect on a missed opportunity. Donovan Mitchell led his team with 29 points, but his impact faded in the crucial fourth quarter, where he managed only three points. Cleveland’s inability to maintain their lead or respond to New York’s surge ultimately proved costly.

Mitchell did not hide his frustration after the game, acknowledging that his team should have closed out the victory. Holding a 22-point lead so late in the game, the Cavaliers were widely expected to win comfortably. Instead, they allowed the Knicks to gain confidence and seize control at the most critical moment.

Fatigue may have played a role in Cleveland’s collapse. This game marked their 11th contest in just 21 days, a demanding schedule that could have affected their energy levels down the stretch. In contrast, the Knicks entered the game well-rested, having not played for nine days, which may have contributed to their ability to sustain a high-intensity comeback.

The result gives New York an early advantage in the best-of-seven series, setting the tone for what promises to be a fiercely contested battle. Game 2 will take place at Madison Square Garden, where the Knicks will look to build on their momentum and extend their lead.

Beyond this series, the stakes are even higher. The winner of the Eastern Conference Finals will advance to the NBA Finals, where they will face either the Oklahoma City Thunder or the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs currently hold a 1-0 lead in that series, adding another layer of intrigue to the playoff picture.

For the Knicks, this victory is more than just a single game—it is a statement. It demonstrates their ability to overcome adversity, perform under pressure, and compete at the highest level. Such comebacks can have a psychological impact on both teams, boosting confidence for the winners while raising doubts for the losers.

Historically, moments like these often become defining points in playoff campaigns. Teams that achieve dramatic victories gain momentum and belief, which can carry them through challenging series. For New York, this could be the spark that drives them toward a deeper postseason run.

For Cleveland, the challenge now is to regroup quickly. They must learn from this collapse, address their shortcomings, and find a way to respond in Game 2. In playoff basketball, resilience is key, and how the Cavaliers react will determine whether they can remain competitive in the series.

As the Eastern Conference Finals continue, all eyes will be on both teams to see how they adjust. Will the Knicks build on their incredible comeback, or will the Cavaliers bounce back with renewed determination? One thing is certain—the series has already delivered a classic moment that will be remembered for years to come.
