I need to be better team player – Wembanyama

Victor Wembanyama has openly admitted he needs to evolve his game and contribute more effectively as a team player following San Antonio Spurs’ 123-108 defeat to the Oklahoma City Thunder in game three of the Western Conference finals. The loss, which came on home court, shifted the momentum of the best-of-seven series in favor of the Thunder, who now lead 2-1.

The game itself told a dramatic story. The Spurs started in dominant fashion, racing to a stunning 15-0 lead within the opening three minutes. It looked like they might seize control early, energizing their home crowd and putting pressure on their opponents. However, the Thunder responded with composure and resilience, gradually chipping away at the deficit before completely taking over the contest.

Despite the defeat, Wembanyama delivered another strong individual performance. The young French star led all Spurs scorers with 24 points, continuing his impressive postseason run. Yet, even with those numbers, he expressed dissatisfaction with his overall contribution, particularly in terms of helping his teammates perform better.

Speaking after the game, Wembanyama acknowledged that his current focus must go beyond scoring. He admitted that he is still learning how to elevate those around him, recognizing that true leadership and impact in the NBA come from making teammates more effective. His self-awareness highlights a maturity that is rare for a player so early in his career.

The 22-year-old emphasized that while his shooting efficiency has been acceptable, other aspects of his game require improvement. He pointed out the need to become a better facilitator, create more opportunities for teammates, and exert greater influence on both ends of the court. For Wembanyama, success is no longer just about personal statistics—it is about driving team success.

Aside from Wembanyama, the Spurs struggled to find consistent scoring support. Devin Russell was the only other player to surpass 15 points, finishing with 20. The lack of offensive balance proved costly, especially against a Thunder team that showcased depth and versatility throughout the game.

Looking back at the series, Wembanyama’s performances have been remarkable. In game one, he delivered a historic display, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to record at least 40 points and 20 rebounds in a playoff game. That performance helped the Spurs secure a 122-115 victory and set the tone for what many expected to be a closely contested series.

However, the Thunder responded strongly in game two, winning 122-113 despite another solid outing from Wembanyama, who recorded 21 points and 17 rebounds. By game three, the Thunder had clearly found their rhythm, executing their game plan effectively and capitalizing on the Spurs’ shortcomings.

A key factor in Oklahoma City’s victory was their exceptional bench performance. The team’s reserves combined for an astonishing 76 points, marking the highest bench contribution ever recorded in a conference finals game since the playoff format expanded in 1984. This depth proved decisive, allowing the Thunder to maintain high intensity and scoring output throughout the match.

Leading the way for the Thunder was Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who once again demonstrated why he is considered one of the league’s elite players. The back-to-back MVP delivered a well-rounded performance, scoring 26 points while also contributing 12 assists. His ability to control the tempo and create opportunities for teammates was instrumental in the Thunder’s comeback.

Jared McCain also played a crucial role, adding 24 points and providing additional offensive firepower. Together, the Thunder’s starters and bench created a balanced attack that overwhelmed the Spurs.

As the series progresses, game four becomes increasingly important for both teams. Scheduled to take place at the same venue, the Spurs will be eager to bounce back and level the series. For Wembanyama, it presents another opportunity to refine his approach and demonstrate the improvements he spoke about.

The stakes are high, as the winner of the Western Conference finals will advance to the NBA Finals, where they will face either the New York Knicks or the Cleveland Cavaliers. Currently, the Knicks hold a 2-0 advantage in the Eastern Conference finals, putting them in a strong position to secure their place in the championship series.

For the Spurs, the challenge is clear. They must find ways to support Wembanyama more effectively, improve their defensive consistency, and match the depth and energy displayed by the Thunder. For Wembanyama himself, the focus is on growth—transforming from a standout individual performer into a complete team leader.

His comments reflect a player who understands the bigger picture. While his talent is undeniable, his willingness to adapt and improve could ultimately define his legacy. If he can successfully elevate his teammates and impact the game in multiple ways, the Spurs will be in a much stronger position to compete at the highest level.

As the series continues, all eyes will remain on Wembanyama and how he responds to this challenge. His journey is just beginning, but moments like these are shaping the kind of player—and leader—he will become.
