Monaco great for Hamilton but no fairytale for Leclerc – driver ratings

Kimi Antonelli extended his incredible form this season with yet another commanding performance, claiming his fifth consecutive victory at the Monaco Grand Prix. The young Mercedes driver delivered a near-perfect weekend in Monte Carlo, achieving what is known in Formula 1 as a “Grand Slam” — starting from pole position, leading every lap of the race, and setting the fastest lap. This dominant display further strengthened his position at the top of the championship standings, where he now holds a comfortable 66-point lead over his closest rivals.

Antonelli’s performance was particularly impressive given the challenges of the Monaco circuit, widely regarded as one of the most demanding tracks in the sport. With its tight corners, narrow streets, and limited overtaking opportunities, Monaco requires precision, focus, and composure. Despite these difficulties, Antonelli remained calm and controlled throughout the race weekend, showcasing maturity well beyond his years. His ability to handle pressure was especially evident during a late-race restart with just 10 laps remaining, where even the smallest mistake could have cost him victory. However, he executed the restart flawlessly and maintained his lead until the checkered flag.

Finishing in second place was Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who once again demonstrated his experience and consistency. Hamilton showed strong pace throughout the weekend but was ultimately unable to match Antonelli’s dominance. A slightly disappointing qualifying session left him starting from the second row, which proved to be a disadvantage on a track where overtaking is notoriously difficult. Despite this, Hamilton managed to secure a podium finish, although a penalty during the race nearly jeopardized his result. Nevertheless, his performance was enough to move him up to second place in the championship standings, overtaking both his teammate Charles Leclerc and Mercedes driver George Russell.

One of the standout stories of the weekend was Isack Hadjar, who delivered an impressive recovery drive to secure his first podium finish for Red Bull. After crashing during Friday’s practice session, Hadjar bounced back strongly, overcoming engine issues and benefiting from a well-executed team strategy. His determination and resilience paid off, earning him a well-deserved third-place finish and marking a significant milestone in his career.

Oscar Piastri continued his consistent run of form with another solid performance for McLaren. Although he was affected by a controversial pit lane penalty, he still managed to secure valuable points for his team. Piastri’s reliability and steady improvement have made him a key contributor to McLaren’s campaign this season.

Liam Lawson also impressed with a composed and confident drive for Racing Bulls. While not as eye-catching as some of the other performances, Lawson’s consistency and ability to capitalize on race incidents helped him secure a strong points finish. His teammate Arvid Lindblad, meanwhile, experienced a challenging start to the weekend but recovered well during the race. By adopting a long-run strategy and avoiding mistakes, Lindblad was able to secure an important points haul for the team.

Pierre Gasly enjoyed a much-needed return to form for Alpine after a series of difficult races. He showed competitive pace throughout the weekend and was even in contention for a podium finish. However, a penalty for speeding in the pit lane ultimately cost him a higher position. Despite this setback, Gasly’s performance was a positive sign for Alpine moving forward.

Alex Albon delivered a strong showing for Williams, appearing more competitive alongside teammate Carlos Sainz. Although he had reservations about team orders, Albon played the team game effectively and was rewarded with valuable points. Esteban Ocon also had a respectable weekend, keeping his race clean and finishing ahead of his Haas teammate Oliver Bearman to secure points.

Fernando Alonso managed to score Aston Martin’s first point of the season, albeit in somewhat fortunate circumstances. However, his experience and skill were evident throughout the weekend, including an impressive save during practice that highlighted his enduring talent.

On the other hand, several drivers struggled to make an impact. Gabriel Bortoleto’s weekend was compromised by a crash at the Nouvelle chicane, while George Russell endured a difficult race, lacking pace and receiving penalties that further hindered his performance. Nico Hulkenberg showed early promise but faded as the weekend progressed, and Franco Colapinto experienced a challenging race filled with near misses and a collision.

Sergio Perez had one of the most disappointing weekends, as penalties for being out of position on the grid cost his team valuable points. Carlos Sainz played a supporting role for Williams but was unable to match Albon’s performance. Max Verstappen showed flashes of brilliance, particularly in qualifying, but technical issues prevented him from challenging for victory.

Charles Leclerc’s home race ended in frustration, as he struggled with car issues and ultimately crashed out. Lando Norris also had a disappointing outing, retiring from the race after failing to find his rhythm. Oliver Bearman, Valtteri Bottas, and Lance Stroll all faced difficulties and were unable to deliver strong results.

Overall, the Monaco Grand Prix highlighted Kimi Antonelli’s exceptional talent and growing dominance in Formula 1. His ability to control the race from start to finish, combined with his composure under pressure, sets him apart as a future star of the sport. As the season progresses, Antonelli’s rivals will need to raise their game significantly if they hope to challenge his impressive run of form.
